JEDI: A versatile code for strain analysis of molecular and periodic systems under deformation

Stretching or compression can induce significant energetic, geometric, and spectroscopic changes in materials. To fully exploit these effects in the design of mechano- or piezo-chromic materials, self-healing polymers, and other mechanoresponsive devices, a detailed knowledge about the distribution of mechanical strain in the material is essential. Within the past decade, Judgement of Energy DIstribution (JEDI) analysis has emerged as a useful tool for this purpose. Based on the harmonic approximation, the strain energy in each bond length, bond angle, and dihedral angle of the deformed system is calculated using quantum chemical methods. This allows the identification of the force-bearing scaffold of the system, leading to an understanding of mechanochemical processes at the most fundamental level. Here, we present a publicly available code that generalizes the JEDI analysis, which has previously only been available for isolated molecules. Now, the code has been extended to two- and three-dimensional periodic systems, supramolecular clusters, and substructures of chemical systems under various types of deformation. Due to the implementation of JEDI into the Atomic Simulation Environment, the JEDI analysis can be interfaced with a plethora of program packages that allow the calculation of electronic energies for molecular systems and systems with periodic boundary conditions. The automated generation of a color-coded three-dimensional structure via the Visual Molecular Dynamics program allows insightful visual analyses of the force-bearing scaffold of the strained system.

Tandem High-Pressure Crystallography-Optical Spectroscopy Unpacks Noncovalent Interactions of Piezochromic Fluorescent Molecular Rotors

To develop luminescent molecular materials with predictable and stimuli-responsive emission, it is necessary to correlate changes in their geometries, packing structures, and noncovalent interactions with the associated changes in their optical properties. Here, we demonstrate that high-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction can be combined with high-pressure UV-visible absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopies to elucidate how subtle changes in structure influence optical outputs. A piezochromic aggregation-induced emitter, sym-heptaphenylcycloheptatriene (Ph7C7H), displays bathochromic shifts in its absorption and emission spectra at high pressure. Parallel X-ray measurements identify the pressure-induced changes in specific phenyl-phenyl interactions responsible for the piezochromism. Pairs of phenyl rings from neighboring molecules approach the geometry of a stable benzene dimer, while conformational changes alter intramolecular phenyl-phenyl interactions correlated with a relaxed excited state. This tandem crystallographic and spectroscopic analysis provides insights into how subtle structural changes relate to the photophysical properties of Ph7C7H and could be applied to a library of similar compounds to provide general structure-property relationships in fluorescent organic molecules with rotor-like geometries.

Pressure-Induced Structural Effects in the Square Lattice () Topology Coordination Network Sql-1-Co-NCS·4OX

A high-pressure study of a switching coordination network of square lattice topology (sql) loaded with o-xylene (OX), [Co(4,4'-bipyridine)₂(NCS)₂] _n ·4nC₈H₁₀ (sql-1-Co-NCS·4OX), was conducted up to approximately 1 GPa to investigate pressure-induced structural changes. Previous reports revealed that sql-1-Co-NCS exhibits multiple phases thanks to its ability to switch between closed (nonporous) and several open (porous) phases in the presence of various gases, vapors, and liquids. Networks of such properties are of topical interest because they can offer high working capacity and improved recyclability for gas adsorption. The monoclinic crystal structure of sql-1-Co-NCS·4OX at 100 K was previously reported to show an increase in interlayer separation of more than 100% compared to the corresponding closed phase, sql-1-Co-NCS, when exposed to gases or vapors under ambient conditions. Herein, a tetragonal crystal form of sql-1-Co-NCS·4OX (space group I4/mmm, Phase I) that exists at 0.1 MPa/303 K is reported. Exposure of Phase I to high pressure using penetrable pressure transmitting media (OX and 1:1 vol MeOH/EtOH) did not result in further separation of the sql networks. Rather, compression of the crystals and release of adsorbed OX molecules occurred. These pressure-induced changes are discussed in terms of structural voids, framework conformation, and molecular packing of the sql layers. Although Phase I retained tetragonal symmetry throughout the investigated pressure range, the interlayer voids occupied by OX molecules were significantly reduced between 0.3 and 0.5 GPa; further compression above 0.5 GPa induced structural disorder. Additionally, analysis of the electron count present in the pores of sql-1-Co-NCS confirmed the multistep evacuation of OX molecules from the crystal, and two intermediate phases, Ia and Ib, differing in the OX loading level, are postulated.

A first-order phase transition in Blatter's radical at high pressure

The crystal structure of Blatter's radical (1,3-diphenyl-1,4-dihydrobenzo[e][1,2,4]triazin-4-yl) has been investigated between ambient pressure and 6.07 GPa. The sample remains in a compressed form of the ambient-pressure phase up to 5.34 GPa, the largest direction of strain being parallel to the direction of π-stacking interactions. The bulk modulus is 7.4 (6) GPa, with a pressure derivative equal to 9.33 (11). As pressure increases, the phenyl groups attached to the N1 and C3 positions of the triazinyl moieties of neighbouring pairs of molecules approach each other, causing the former to begin to rotate between 3.42 to 5.34 GPa. The onset of this phenyl rotation may be interpreted as a second-order phase transition which introduces a new mode for accommodating pressure. It is premonitory to a first-order isosymmetric phase transition which occurs on increasing pressure from 5.34 to 5.54 GPa. Although the phase transition is driven by volume minimization, rather than relief of unfavourable contacts, it is accompanied by a sharp jump in the orientation of the rotation angle of the phenyl group. DFT calculations suggest that the adoption of a more planar conformation by the triazinyl moiety at the phase transition can be attributed to relief of intramolecular H...H contacts at the transition. Although no dimerization of the radicals occurs, the π-stacking interactions are compressed by 0.341 (3) Å between ambient pressure and 6.07 GPa.

Solvent-controlled elongation and mechanochemical strain in a metal-organic framework

Under high pressure, crystals of [Zn(m-btcp)₂(bpdc)₂]·2DMF·H₂O, referred to as DMOF are particularly sensitive to the type of pressure-transmitting media (PTM) employed: large PTM molecules seal the pores and DMOF is compressed as a closed system, whereas small PTM molecules are pushed into the pores, thereby altering the stoichiometry of DMOF. Compression in glycerol and Daphne 7474 leads to negative linear compressibility (NLC), while a mixture of methanol : ethanol : water 'hyperfills' the pores of the chiral framework, adjusting its 3-dimensional strain and resulting in pressure-induced amorphization around 1.2 GPa. The uptake of the small-molecule PTM strongly increases the dimensions of DMOF in the direction perpendicular to that of the NLC of the crystal.

Maximizing completeness in single-crystal high-pressure diffraction experiments: phase transitions in 2°AP

Sufficiently high completeness of diffraction data is necessary to correctly determine the space group, observe solid-state structural transformations or investigate charge density distribution under pressure. Regrettably, experiments performed at high pressure in a diamond anvil cell (DAC) yield inherently incomplete datasets. The present work systematizes the combined influence of radiation wavelength, DAC opening angle and sample orientation in a DAC on the completeness of diffraction data collected in a single-crystal high-pressure (HP) experiment with the help of dedicated software. In particular, the impact of the sample orientation on the achievable data completeness is quantified and proved to be substantial. Graphical guides for estimating the most beneficial sample orientation depending on the sample Laue class and assuming a few commonly used experimental setups are proposed. The usefulness of these guides has been tested in the case of luminescent 1,3-diacetylpyrene, suspected to undergo transitions from the α phase (Pnma) to the γ phase (Pn21 a) and δ phase (P1121/a) under pressure. Effective sample orientation has ensured over 90% coverage even for the monoclinic system and enabled unrestrained structure refinements and access to complete systematic extinction patterns.

Hydrogen-Bonded Cyclic Dimers at Large Compression: The Case of 1H-pyrrolo[3,2-h]quinoline and 2-(2'-pyridyl)pyrrole

1H-pyrrolo[3,2-h]qinoline (PQ) and 2-(2′-pyridyl)pyrrole (PP) are important systems in the study of proton-transfer reactions. These molecules possess hydrogen bond donor (pyrrole) and acceptor (pyridine) groups, which leads to the formation of cyclic dimers in their crystals. Herein, we present a joint experimental (Raman scattering) and computational (DFT modelling) study on the high-pressure behaviour of PQ and PP molecular crystals. Our results indicate that compression up to 10 GPa (100 kbar) leads to considerable strengthening of the intermolecular hydrogen bond within the cyclic dimers. However, the intramolecular N–H∙∙∙N interaction is either weakly affected by pressure, as witnessed in PQ, or weakened due to compression-induced distortions of the molecule, as was found for PP. Therefore, we propose that the compression of these systems should facilitate double proton transfer within the cyclic dimers of PQ and PP, while intramolecular transfer should either remain unaffected (for PQ) or weakened (for PP).

Tribochemistry, Mechanical Alloying, Mechanochemistry: What is in a Name?

Over the decades, the application of mechanical force to influence chemical reactions has been called by various names: mechanochemistry, tribochemistry, mechanical alloying, to name but a few. The evolution of these terms has largely mirrored the understanding of the field. But what is meant by these terms, why have they evolved, and does it really matter how a process is called? Which parameters should be defined to describe unambiguously the experimental conditions such that others can reproduce the results, or to allow a meaningful comparison between processes explored under different conditions? Can the information on the process be encoded in a clear, concise, and self-explanatory way? We address these questions in this Opinion contribution, which we hope will spark timely and constructive discussion across the international mechanochemical community.

Lanthanide Upconverted Luminescence for Simultaneous Contactless Optical Thermometry and Manometry-Sensing under Extreme Conditions of Pressure and Temperature

The growing interest in the miniaturization of various devices and conducting experiments under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature causes the need for the development of small, contactless, precise, and accurate optical sensors without any electrical connections. In this work, YF₃:Yb³⁺-Er³⁺ upconverting microparticles are used as a bifunctional luminescence sensor for simultaneous temperature and pressure measurements. Different changes in the properties of Er³⁺ green and red upconverted luminescence, after excitation of Yb³⁺ ions in the near-infrared at ∼975 nm, are used to calibrate pressure and/or temperature inside the hydrostatic chamber of a diamond anvil cell (DAC). For temperature sensing, changes in the relative intensities of the Er³⁺ green upconverted luminescence of ²H_11/2 and ⁴S_3/2 thermally coupled multiplets to the ⁴I_15/2 ground state, whose relative populations follow a Boltzmann distribution, are calibrated. For pressure sensing, the spectral shift of the Er³⁺ upconverted red emission peak at ∼665 nm, between the Stark sublevels of the ⁴F_9/2 → ⁴I_15/2 transition, is used. Experiments performed under simultaneous extreme conditions of pressure, up to ∼8 GPa, and temperature, up to ∼473 K, confirm the possibility of remote optical pressure and temperature sensing.
