Polymorphism of a widely used building block for halogen-bonded assemblies: 1,3,5-trifluoro-2,4,6-triiodobenzene

How the Position of Substitution Affects Intermolecular Bonding in Halogen Derivatives of Carboranes: Crystal Structures of 1,2,3- and 8,9,12-Triiodo- and 8,9,12-Tribromo ortho-Carboranes

The crystal structures of two isomeric triiodo derivatives of ortho-carborane containing substituents in the three most electron-withdrawing positions of the carborane cage, 1,2,3-I₃-1,2-C₂B₁₀H₉, and the three most electron-donating positions, 8,9,12-I₃-1,2-C₂B₁₀H₉, as well as the crystal structure of 8,9,12-Br₃-1,2-C₂B₁₀H₉, were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In the structure of 1,2,3-I₃-1,2-C₂B₁₀H₉, an iodine atom attached to the boron atom (position 3) donates its lone pairs simultaneously to the σ-holes of both iodine atoms attached to the carbon atoms (positions 1 and 2) with the I⋯I distance of 3.554(2) Å and the C-I⋯I and B-I⋯I angles of 169.2(2)° and 92.2(2)°, respectively. The structure is additionally stabilized by a few B-H⋯I-shortened contacts. In the structure of 8,9,12-I₃-1,2-C₂B₁₀H₉, the I⋯I contacts of type II are very weak (the I⋯I distance is 4.268(4) Å, the B8-I8⋯I12 and B12-I12⋯I8 angles are 130.2(3)° and 92.2(3)°) and can only be regarded as dihalogen bonds formally. In comparison with the latter, the structure of 8,9,12-Br₃-1,2-C₂B₁₀H₉ demonstrates both similarities and differences. No Br⋯Br contacts of type II are observed, while there are two Br⋯Br halogen bonds of type I.

Halogen Bonding in Dithiane/Iodofluorobenzene Mixtures: A New Class of Hydrophobic Deep Eutectic Solvents

While research into deep eutectic solvents (DESs) has expanded over the previous two decades, the focus has remained on the utilization of hydrogen bond donors in these systems. Additionally, the majority of the known DESs rely on at least one ionic component. Through the combination of 1,3-dithiane and 1,2-diiodo-3,4,5,6-tetrafluorobenzene (1,2-F₄ DIB), we report the first known DES based on halogen bonding. This mixture remains a liquid, with a eutectic melting temperature of 13.7 °C over a range of 1,3-dithiane mole fraction (0.35 to 0.75). Additionally, cocrystals of 1,3- and 1,4-dithiane with 1,2-, 1,3-, and 1,4-F₄ DIB, as well as 1,3,5-trifluoro-2,4,6-triiodobenzene were studied via single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These data reveal a wide range of halogen bonding strengths (0.85<R_XB <0.99; R_XB =normalized halogen bond distance parameter) and geometries about the sulfur atom. By including intermolecular interactions beyond hydrogen bonding, the scope of possible DES systems can be greatly expanded.

Structural and optical profile of a multifunctionalized 2-pyridone derivative in a crystal engineering perspective

The supramolecular structural features of organic molecules are very important with regard to their widespread properties in both solids and solutions. Herein, we describe the synthesis of a novel multifunctional 2-pyridone derivative, namely 6-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-formyl-4-methylsulfanyl-2-oxo-1,2-dihydropyridine-3-carbonitrile, C₁₄H₉ClN₂O₂S, denoted P1, and its structural features were established through X-ray crystallography. A Hirshfeld surface analysis followed by a two-dimensional fingerprint plot analysis was carried out. A frontier molecular orbital investigation and natural bond orbital (NBO) calculations explored the charge-transfer interactions associated with the molecular system. The optical properties of the 2-pyridone derivative were elucidated through UV-Vis absorption and emission spectroscopy, indicating a strong blue emissive nature with a colour purity of 82.5%, a short-lived lifetime and a large Stokes shift. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) was used to gain some insight into the absorption behaviour and emissive characteristics of P1.
