The motivation of women entrepreneurs in Singapore

Examining the factors linking the intention of female entrepreneurial mindset: A study in Pakistan's small and medium-sized enterprises

In contemporary times, women have gained recognition as accomplished entrepreneurs who make substantial contributions to economic development by virtue of their perseverance, excellence, and expertise. The concept of women's entrepreneurship encompasses the undertaking of creating novel enterprises, with the individual's intention to assume the role of an entrepreneur serving as a pivotal factor in this developmental trajectory. The underperformance of female entrepreneurs is alarming for developing nations. Purposefully, exploring the factors correlating female entrepreneurship intention is highly regarded, and a timely research is needed, thus this study explores the context of Pakistan considered a developing country. Hence, we collected data from listed small and medium enterprises (SMEs) operating in the country by means of structured questionnaires. Using SPSS and Smart-PLS software, we developed a conceptual model and performed analysis. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) constitutes a robust psychological framework applicable to understanding and anticipating various human behaviors, first and foremost, entrepreneurial intention. When applying the TPB to the area of women's entrepreneurial intentions, several crucial factors come into play, including motivation, self-confidence, personality traits, and adaptability. The results indicate that factors such as the will to start a business, willingness, personality traits, adaptability, and background factors, including education and experience, impact entrepreneurial intention. Also, their professional careers make them able to launch a business. Based on our findings, we recommend that the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority (SMEDA), policymakers, and practitioners may provide various incentives and support systems related to these factors to encourage their own company launches. Prior research has examined various factors that impact the entrepreneurial mindsets of women. However, our study focuses specifically on closely associated aspects that have received limited attention, particularly in the context of Pakistan. This study makes a valuable contribution to the extant body of literature by providing empirical evidence in the aforementioned domains.

Opportunity Finding by Nascent Entrepreneurs: Accidental or Purposeful?

Purpose

This research studies an important, but relatively unexplored entrepreneurial aspect: motivation and aspiration on opportunity finding/discovery.

Design/Methodology/Approach

This study surveyed 230 nascent entrepreneurs on their opportunity finding behavior. A poisson regression and a logistic analysis were conducted to discover the relationship between motivation/aspiration and opportunity search behavior.

Findings

Motivation and aspiration interact to influence active search in a positive way. However, only willingness to become an entrepreneur is found to search for opportunities purposefully.

Research Limitations/Implications

Participants of the research are from a Midwest state in United States. Future research may collect sample from more and larger areas.

Practical Implications

Bankers may use entrepreneurial opportunity search behavior as one criterion determining if to fund a person or not.

Originality/Value

This article answers the call to study motivation/aspiration on opportunity finding (Yitshaki and Kropp, 2018; Murnieks et al., 2020). It is one of the first studies to explore the above relationship.

Motivations of the Female Entrepreneurs to Start Online Businesses in the United Arab Emirates

The global dissemination of internet technology and advances in it are facilitating female entrepreneurs to participate in online entrepreneurial activities by utilizing new business frameworks to achieve economies of scope and scale as they start to compete with the traditional entrepreneurs in the market. This research draws on two fields of scholarly research; “online businesses” and “female entrepreneurship” and, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that endeavors to provide an overview of female entrepreneurship in online businesses in the UAE. This study, which is based on a qualitative survey of 20 online businesses, owned and smanaged by females’ in the UAE, investigates why females start their online businesses. The obvious picture emerging from this study is that with control over the number of hours they put in their online businesses and do not face the type of work to family conflict encountered by the female who own and manage traditional businesses outside of their homes. More precisely, the results of this study give indicative and exciting comprehensions into the challenges and impediments of female entrepreneurs in this fast-growing sector of the UAE economy. Of critical interest to researchers and policy makers, we investigate the challenges and impediments to success and the ways that female entrepreneurs in the UAE are successfully starting and expanding their online businesses.

Female aspirant human resources’ entrepreneurial orientation

Purpose

– The main purpose of the study was to assess the entrepreneurial orientation based on personality and attitude of female aspirant human resources in India.

Design/methodology/approach

– For collecting primary data, the scale on entrepreneurial attitude orientation developed by Robinson et al. (1991) was used. Statistical tools such as correlations, analysis of variance, means, grand means, standard deviations and percentages were used for the analysis of the primary data gathered from 500 female respondents.

Findings

– The results showed the highest score of the female respondents on the achievement motivation as compared to other three personality descriptors and lowest but positive score on the self-esteem dimension. Among attitude components, the cognition had emerged as highest. MBAs showed comparatively less entrepreneurial orientation than other categories of female aspirants. Results indicated that lower age, lower educational qualifications and high socioeconomic status supported the entrepreneurship.

Research limitations/implications

– The study was limited to only four personality traits and three attitude components. Another limitation of the study was that the data were collected from North India that could have been collected from the wider area.

Practical implications

– The study will be helpful to the female aspirant participants to decide whether to choose managerial or entrepreneurial careers. By taking cues from this study, educators can build curriculum and develop programs to encourage and empower future female entrepreneurs.

Originality/value

– Inclusion of Indian female aspirants of different backgrounds will definitely add value to the existing knowledge, management theory and practice.
