Evaluating the readiness of healthcare administration students to utilize AI for sustainable leadership: a survey study

PURPOSE

This paper explores how healthcare administration students perceive the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare leadership, mainly focusing on the sustainability aspects involved. It aims to identify gaps in current educational curricula and suggests enhancements to better prepare future healthcare professionals for the evolving demands of AI-driven healthcare environments.

DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH

This study utilized a cross-sectional survey design to understand healthcare administration students' perceptions regarding integrating AI in healthcare leadership. An online questionnaire, developed from an extensive literature review covering fundamental AI knowledge and its role in sustainable leadership, was distributed to students majoring and minoring in healthcare administration. This methodological approach garnered participation from 62 students, providing insights and perspectives crucial for the study's objectives.

FINDINGS

The research revealed that while a significant majority of healthcare administration students (70%) recognize the potential of AI in fostering sustainable leadership in healthcare, only 30% feel adequately prepared to work in AI-integrated environments. Additionally, students were interested in learning more about AI applications in healthcare and the role of AI in sustainable leadership, underscoring the need for comprehensive AI-focused education in their curriculum.

RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/IMPLICATIONS

The research is limited by its focus on a single academic institution, which may not fully represent the diversity of perspectives in healthcare administration.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS

This study highlights the need for healthcare administration curricula to incorporate AI education, aligning theoretical knowledge with practical applications, to effectively prepare future professionals for the evolving demands of AI-integrated healthcare environments.

Nurse leaders' perceptions of future leadership in hospital settings in the post-pandemic era: a qualitative descriptive study

PURPOSE

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has challenged leadership in hospitals worldwide. The experiences of leadership during the pandemic changed leadership significantly. This study aims to describe nurse leaders' perceptions of what future leadership in hospital settings in the post-pandemic era needs to be like.

DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH

A qualitative descriptive study was used. A total of 20 nurse leaders from the Finnish central hospital were interviewed from June to October 2021. The data were analysed using inductive content analysis.

FINDINGS

The analysis revealed five main categories describing nurse leaders' perceptions of future leadership in hospital settings in the post-pandemic era: digitalisation and hybrid working culture, development of sustainable working conditions, moving smoothly to the post-pandemic era, dissolution of traditional regimes of organisation and flexibility in leadership.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS

In the post-pandemic era, the constantly changing demands and challenges currently facing healthcare systems have significantly increased the complexity of hospital organisations. This requires critical evaluation and change to traditional leadership. Enhancing flexibility and authenticity in leadership, strengthening competencies, implementing a wide range of digital resources and increasing the appeal of the nursing profession to build the next generation of nurses - all of these are needed to provide sustainability in future healthcare.

ORIGINALITY/VALUE

The results identify the critical points of leadership that need to be developed for future challenges and for maintaining a sufficient supply of qualified professionals. Acting on this information will enhance flexibility in organisations and lead to acceleration of changes and the development of new kinds of leadership in the future.

Guidance for management competency identification and development in the health context: a systematic scoping review

BACKGROUND

Using management competency-based frameworks to guide developing and delivering training and formal education to managers has been increasingly recognized as a key strategy in building management capacity. Hence, interest in identifying and confirming the competency requirements in various contexts have been witnessed. Therefore, learnings from how competency studies were designed and conducted, how competencies were identified, and strategies in ensuring success in competency identification are of great value to researchers planning and conducting competency studies in their own country.

METHODS

A scoping review was conducted guided by the Arksey and O'Malley framework and reported according to the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). All papers that published empirical studies aiming at identifying and assessing manager's competencies at the peer-reviewed journals were identified from Web of sciences, PubMed, Scopus and Emerald Management between 2000 and 2021. In order to maximize learning, studies focusing on health and non-health sectors are all included.

RESULTS

In total, 186 studies were included in the review including slightly more than half of the studies conducted in health sector (54.5%). 60% of the studies focused on mid to senior level managers. Surveys and Interviews were the two most commonly used methods either solely or as part of the mix-method in the studies. Half of the studies used mixed methods approach (51.1%). Large proportion of the papers failed to include all information that is necessary to contribute to learning and improvement in future study design. Based on the results of the scoping review a four steps framework was developed that can guide designing and implementing management competency studies in specific country vs. sector context and to ensure benefits of the studies are maximised.

CONCLUSION

The review confirmed the increasing trend in investing in management competency studies and that the management competency identification and development process varied substantially, in the choice of methods and processes. The identification of missing information in majority of the published studies calls for the development of more rigorous guidelines for the peer-review process of journal publications. The proposed framework of improving the quality and impact of the future management competency study provides clear guidance to management competency identification and development that promotes the functional alignment of methods and strategies with intended uses and contexts.

Leadership and administrative support for interprofessional collaboration in a cancer center

PURPOSE

The interprofessional collaboration is a key practice for providing cancer care. However, the realization of collaboration requires effective leadership and administrative support. In this study, the aim was to analyze healthcare professionals' perceptions of leadership and administrative support (strategic and management) in interprofessional collaboration for developing practices in cancer care.

DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH

A descriptive survey design was used to collect data from healthcare professionals (n = 350, response rate 33.3%), including nurses, physicians and other professionals participating in patient care in one Finnish cancer center (out of five) in 05/2018-10/2018. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The instrument focused on leadership in the work unit and administrative support including organization strategy and organizational management.

FINDINGS

Healthcare professionals perceived leadership in the work unit, organization strategy and management for the support of interprofessional collaboration as weak. However, the ratings of male respondents and those in leading positions were more positive. The findings indicate that healthcare professionals in the cancer care setting are dissatisfied with the leadership and administrative support.

RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/IMPLICATIONS

Interprofessional collaboration, including its leadership, requires systematic and constant evaluation and development.

Healthcare leaders in the cancer care setting can use the results to identify factors that might be in need of attention and development in the field of interprofessional collaboration.
