Joint infrared target recognition and segmentation using a shape manifold-aware level set

We propose new techniques for joint recognition, segmentation and pose estimation of infrared (IR) targets. The problem is formulated in a probabilistic level set framework where a shape constrained generative model is used to provide a multi-class and multi-view shape prior and where the shape model involves a couplet of view and identity manifolds (CVIM). A level set energy function is then iteratively optimized under the shape constraints provided by the CVIM. Since both the view and identity variables are expressed explicitly in the objective function, this approach naturally accomplishes recognition, segmentation and pose estimation as joint products of the optimization process. For realistic target chips, we solve the resulting multi-modal optimization problem by adopting a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and then improve the computational efficiency by implementing a gradient-boosted PSO (GB-PSO). Evaluation was performed using the Military Sensing Information Analysis Center (SENSIAC) ATR database, and experimental results show that both of the PSO algorithms reduce the cost of shape matching during CVIM-based shape inference. Particularly, GB-PSO outperforms other recent ATR algorithms, which require intensive shape matching, either explicitly (with pre-segmentation) or implicitly (without pre-segmentation).

Sparsity-motivated automatic target recognition

We present an automatic target recognition algorithm using the recently developed theory of sparse representations and compressive sensing. We show how sparsity can be helpful for efficient utilization of data for target recognition. We verify the efficacy of the proposed algorithm in terms of the recognition rate and confusion matrices on the well known Comanche (Boeing-Sikorsky, USA) forward-looking IR data set consisting of ten different military targets at different orientations.

Automatic target detection in forward-looking infrared imagery via probabilistic neural networks

This paper presents a technique for automatic detection of the targets in forward-looking infrared (FLIR) imagery. Mathematical morphology is applied for the preliminary selection of possible regions of interest (ROI). An efficient clutter rejecter module based on probabilistic neural network is proposed, which is trained by using both target and background features to ensure excellent classification performance by moving the ROI in several directions with respect to the center of the detected target patch. Experimental results using real-life FLIR imagery confirm the excellent performance of the detector and the effectiveness of the proposed clutter rejecter module.

Target tracking in infrared imagery using weighted composite reference function-based decision fusion

In this paper, we propose a novel decision fusion algorithm for target tracking in forward-looking infrared image sequences recorded from an airborne platform. An important part of this study is identifying the failure modes in this type of imagery. Our strategy is to prevent these failure modes from developing into tracking failures. The results furnished by competing ego-motion compensation and tracking algorithms are evaluated based on their similarity to a target model constructed using the weighted composite reference function.

Automated vehicle detection in forward-looking infrared imagery

We describe an algorithm for the detection and clutter rejection of military vehicles in forward-looking infrared (FLIR) imagery. The detection algorithm is designed to be a prescreener that selects regions for further analysis and uses a spatial anomaly approach that looks for target-sized regions of the image that differ in texture, brightness, edge strength, or other spatial characteristics. The features are linearly combined to form a confidence image that is thresholded to find likely target locations. The clutter rejection portion uses target-specific information extracted from training samples to reduce the false alarms of the detector. The outputs of the clutter rejecter and detector are combined by a higher-level evidence integrator to improve performance over simple concatenation of the detector and clutter rejecter. The algorithm has been applied to a large number of FLIR imagery sets, and some of these results are presented here.

Optimum receivers for pattern recognition in the presence of Gaussian noise with unknown statistics

We develop algorithms to detect a known pattern or a reference signal in the presence of additive, disjoint background, and multiplicative white Gaussian noise with unknown statistics. The presence of three different types of noise processes with unknown statistics presents difficulties in estimating the unknown parameters. The standard methods such as expected-maximization-type algorithms are iterative, and in the framework of hypothesis testing they are time-consuming, because corresponding to each hypothesis one must estimate a set of parameters. Other standard methods such as setting the gradient of the likelihood function with respect to the unknown parameters will lead to a nonlinear system of equations that do not have a closed-form solution and require iterative methods. We develop an approach to overcome these handicaps and derive algorithms to detect a known object. We present new methods to estimate unknown parameters within the framework of hypothesis testing. The methods that we present are direct and provide closed-form estimates of the unknown parameters. Computer simulations are used to show that for the images tested, the receivers that we have designed perform better than existing receivers.
