Disposable Stiffness Sensor for Endoscopic Examination

Since direct manual palpation is not possible in minimally invasive procedures, there is an active field of applied research which aims to retrieve the human sense of touch and feedback tissue properties through artificial tactile feedback. This paper presents an innovative stiffness sensor to be embedded at the tip of a commercial endoscopic camera. The sensor structure is based on multiple cantilever beams, which act as springs with different stiffness when indented into soft tissue. Geometric features mounted on the beams are tracked during physical contact. Movements of thecantilevers result in shape variations of the features in the camera images. The feature size is then segmented and related to the force exerted into the contact location. As beams of different elasticity are integrated, it is possible to estimate the stiffness properties of the soft tissue by employing only visual information. In this paper, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was implemented to simulate and estimate how contact forces will affect the material and design of the prototype. A calibration device has been developed and used to validate the outcome of the FEA simulations. An experimental test showed the ability of the proposed mechanism to compute the stiffness of a soft phantom.

Real-Time Vision-Based Stiffness Mapping †

This paper presents new findings concerning a hand-held stiffness probe for the medical diagnosis of abnormalities during palpation of soft-tissue. Palpation is recognized by the medical community as an essential and low-cost method to detect and diagnose disease in soft-tissue. However, differences are often subtle and clinicians need to train for many years before they can conduct a reliable diagnosis. The probe presented here fills this gap providing a means to easily obtain stiffness values of soft tissue during a palpation procedure. Our stiffness sensor is equipped with a multi degree of freedom (DoF) Aurora magnetic tracker, allowing us to track and record the 3D position of the probe whilst examining a tissue area, and generate a 3D stiffness map in real-time. The stiffness probe was integrated in a robotic arm and tested in an artificial environment representing a good model of soft tissue organs; the results show that the sensor can accurately measure and map the stiffness of a silicon phantom embedded with areas of varying stiffness.

Disposable soft 3 axis force sensor for biomedical applications

This paper proposes a new disposable soft 3D force sensor that can be used to calculate either force or displacement and vibrations. It uses three Hall Effect sensors orthogonally placed around a cylindrical beam made of silicon rubber. A niobium permanent magnet is inside the silicon. When a force is applied to the end of the cylinder, it is compressed and bent to the opposite side of the force displacing the magnet. This displacement causes change in the magnetic flux around the ratiomatric linear sensors (Hall Effect sensors). By analysing these changes, we calculate the force or displacement in three directions using a lookup table. This sensor can be used in minimal invasive surgery and haptic feedback applications. The cheap construction, bio-compatibility and ease of miniaturization are few advantages of this sensor. The sensor design, and its characterization are presented in this work.

Grasper having tactile sensing function using acoustic reflection for laparoscopic surgery

PURPOSE

In current minimally invasive surgery techniques, the tactile information available to the surgeon is limited. Improving tactile sensation could enhance the operability of surgical instruments. Considering surgical applications, requirements such as having electrical safety, a simple structure, and sterilization capability should be considered. The current study sought to develop a grasper that can measure grasping force at the tip, based on a previously proposed tactile sensing method using acoustic reflection. This method can satisfy the requirements for surgical applications because it has no electrical element within the part that is inserted into the patient's body.

METHODS

We integrated our acoustic tactile sensing method into a conventional grasping forceps instrument. We designed the instrument so that acoustic cavities within a grasping arm and a fork sleeve were connected by a small cavity in a pivoting joint. In this design, when the angle between the two grasping arms changes during grasping, the total length and local curvature of the acoustic cavity remain unchanged. Thus, the grasping force can be measured regardless of the orientation of the grasping arm.

RESULTS

We developed a prototype sensorized grasper based on our proposed design. Fundamental tests revealed that sensor output increased with increasing contact force applied to the grasping arm, and the angle of the grasping arm did not significantly affect the sensor output. Moreover, the results of a grasping test, in which objects with different softness characteristics were held by the grasper, revealed that the grasping force could be appropriately adjusted to handle different objects on the basis of sensor output.

CONCLUSIONS

Experimental results demonstrated that the prototype grasper can measure grasping force, enabling safe and stable grasping.

Comfort and learnability assessment of a new soft robotic manipulator for minimally invasive surgery

Laparoscopic surgeons perform precise and time consuming procedures while holding awkward poses in their upper body and arms. There is an ongoing effort to produce robotic tools for laparoscopic surgery that will simplify these tasks and reduce risk of errors to help both the surgeon and the patient. STIFF-FLOP is an ongoing EU FP7 project focusing on this by creating a stiffness controllable soft robotic manipulator. This paper reports on a study to test the soft manipulator's learnability and the effort associated with its use. The tests involved a limited prototype of the manipulator with a custom built test rig and EMG acquisition system. Task times and video recordings along with EMG waveforms from the forearm muscles of participants (n=25) were measured for objective assessment. A questionnaire was also provided to the participants for subjective assessment. The data shows that in average EMG levels were 25.9% less in RMS when using the STIFF-FLOP arm than when conventional laparoscopic tools were used. In terms of learnability, from the first to the second attempt on the STIFF-FLOP manipulator, elapsed time was reduced by an average of 32.1%.
