Neural Monitoring With CMOS Image Sensors

Implantable image sensors have several biomedical applications due to their miniature size, light weight, and low power consumption achieved through sub-micron standard CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) technologies. The main applications are in specific cell labeling, neural activity detection, and biomedical imaging. In this paper the recent research studies on implantable CMOS image sensors for neural activity monitoring of brain are being quantified and reviewed. Based on the results, the suitable implantable image sensors for brain neural monitoring should have high signal to noise ratio of above 60 dB, high dynamic range of near 88 dB and low power consumption than the safety threshold of 4W/cm². Moreover, it is found out that the next generation of implantable imaging device trend should reduce the pixel size and power consumption of CMOS image sensors to increase spatial resolution of sample images.

Implantable image sensor based on intra-brain image transmission

We developed and fabricated a micro-imager based on wireless intra-brain communication using conductive property of living tissues. An pixel array, analog-to-digital converter and transmitter are integrated on a single chip. The dimensions of the chip are 1 mm × 1mm × 0.15 mm. We demonstrate wireless image transmission through phosphate buffer saline as a brain phantom.

Signal transmission through human muscle for implantable medical devices using galvanic intra-body communication technique

Signal transmission over human tissues has long been the center research topic for biomedical engineering in both academic and industrial arenas. This is particular important for implantable medical devices (IMD) to communicate with other sensor devices in achieving health care and monitoring functions. Traditional Radio Frequency (RF) transmission technique suffers from not only high attenuation but also potential interference & eavesdropping. This paper has examined the alternate galvanic type Intra-Body Communication Technique (IBC) in transmitting signal across the body tissue (mainly muscle) in both analytical electromagnetic model with simulation results. Comparisons of these results with traditional RF data in literatures show a high promising potential (saving over 10 dB or more in path loss) for IBC transmission. Concrete discussions and several further research directions are also given out at the end of this paper.

Wireless intra-brain communication for image transmission through mouse brain

We demonstrate wireless image data transmission through a mouse brain. The transmission characteristics of mouse brain is measured. By inserting electrodes into the brain, the transmission efficiency is drastically increased. An AM signal modulated with the image data from an implantable image sensor was launched into the brain and the received signal was demodulated. The data was successfully transmitted through the brain and the image was reproduced.

Baseband signal transmission experiment for intra-brain communication with implantable image sensor

We demonstrate image signal transmission for wireless intra-brain communication. As a preliminary experiment, transmission characteristics of the brain phantom were measured. The baseband output signal from an implantable complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor is transmitted through the phantom. The image was successfully reproduced from the received signal.

Wireless communication with implanted medical devices using the conductive properties of the body

Many medical devices that are implanted in the body use wires or wireless radiofrequency telemetry to communicate with circuitry outside the body. However, the wires are a common source of surgical complications, including breakage, infection and electrical noise. In addition, radiofrequency telemetry requires large amounts of power and results in low-efficiency transmission through biological tissue. As an alternative, the conductive properties of the body can be used to enable wireless communication with implanted devices. In this article, several methods of intrabody communication are described and compared. In addition to reducing the complications that occur with current implantable medical devices, intrabody communication can enable novel types of miniature devices for research and clinical applications.
