EMD-based analysis of complexity with dissociated EEG amplitude and frequency information: a data-driven robust tool -for Autism diagnosis- compared to multi-scale entropy approach

OBJECTIVE

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is usually characterised by altered social skills, repetitive behaviours, and difficulties in verbal/nonverbal communication. It has been reported that electroencephalograms (EEGs) in ASD are characterised by atypical complexity. The most commonly applied method in studies of ASD EEG complexity is multiscale entropy (MSE), where the sample entropy is evaluated across several scales. However, the accuracy of MSE-based classifications between ASD and neurotypical EEG activities is poor owing to several shortcomings in scale extraction and length, the overlap between amplitude and frequency information, and sensitivity to frequency. The present study proposes a novel, nonlinear, non-stationary, adaptive, data-driven, and accurate method for the classification of ASD and neurotypical groups based on EEG complexity and entropy without the shortcomings of MSE.

APPROACH

The proposed method is as follows: (a) each ASD and neurotypical EEG (122 subjects × 64 channels) is decomposed using empirical mode decomposition (EMD) to obtain the intrinsic components (intrinsic mode functions). (b) The extracted components are normalised through the direct quadrature procedure. (c) The Hilbert transforms of the components are computed. (d) The analytic counterparts of components (and normalised components) are found. (e) The instantaneous frequency function of each analytic normalised component is calculated. (f) The instantaneous amplitude function of each analytic component is calculated. (g) The Shannon entropy values of the instantaneous frequency and amplitude vectors are computed. (h) The entropy values are classified using a neural network (NN). (i) The achieved accuracy is compared to that obtained with MSE-based classification. (j) The consistency of the results of entropy 3D mapping with clinical data is assessed.

MAIN RESULTS

The results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms MSE (accuracy: 66.4%), with an accuracy of 93.5%. Moreover, the entropy 3D mapping results are more consistent with the available clinical data regarding brain topography in ASD.

SIGNIFICANCE

This study presents a more robust alternative to MSE, which can be used for accurate classification of ASD/neurotypical as well as for the examination of EEG entropy across brain zones in ASD.

Classification of Normal, Ictal and Inter-ictal EEG via Direct Quadrature and Random Forest Tree

This paper presents an accurate nonlinear classification method that can help physicians diagnose seizure in electroencephalographic (EEG) signal characterized by a disturbance in temporal and spectral content. This is accomplished by applying four steps. First, different EEG signals containing healthy, ictal and seizure-free (inter-ictal) activities are decomposed by empirical mode decomposition method. The instantaneous amplitudes and frequencies of resulted bands (intrinsic mode functions, IMF) are then tracked by the direct quadrature method (DQ). In contrast to other approaches, DQ cancels the effect of amplitude modulation on frequency calculation. The dissociation between instantaneous amplitude and frequency information is therefore fully achieved to avoid features confusion. Afterwards, the Shannon entropy values of both sets of instantaneous values (amplitudes and frequencies)—related to every IMF—are calculated. Finally, the obtained entropy values are classified by random forest tree. The proposed procedure yields 100% accuracy for (healthy)/(ictal) and 98.3–99.7% for (healthy)/(ictal)/(interictal) classification problems. The suggested method is hence robust, accurate, fast, user-friendly, data driven with open access interpretability.

A Wearable Technology Revisited for Cardio-Respiratory Functional Exploration

The objective of the present study is to extract new information from complex signals generated by Respiratory Inductive Plethysmography (RIP). This indirect cardio-respiratory (CR) measure is a well-known wearable solution. The authors applied time-scale analysis to estimate cardiac activity from thoracic volume variations, witnesses of CR interactions. Calibrated RIP signals gathered from 4 healthy volunteers in resting conditions are processed by Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition to extract cardiac volume signals and estimate stroke volumes. Averaged values of these stroke volumes (SVRIP) are compared with averaged values of stroke volumes determined simultaneously by electrical impedance cardiography (SVICG). There is a satisfactory correlation between SVRIP and SVICG (r=0.76, p<0.001) and the limits of agreement between the 2 types of measurements (±23%) satisfies the required criterion (±30%). The observed under-estimation (-58%) is argued. This validates the use of RIP for following stroke volume variations and suggests that one simple transducer can provide a quantitative exploration of both ventilatory and cardiac volumes.

Towards a suitable time-scale representation of cardio-respiratory signals through Empirical Mode Decomposition algorithms: a simulation and validation tool

To what extent is Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) able to differentiate the embedded components of a cardio-respiratory (CR) signal? We intend to answer this question by providing a tool which compares the performances of the original EMD algorithm with those of a noise-assisted version (CEEMD) on simulated CR signals, depending on the frequency and amplitude ratios between their respiratory and cardiac components. A statistical Bland & Altman test checks the matching of stroke volumes calculated from the extracted cardiac signal and those from the simulated one. CEEMD turns out to be better than EMD by yielding to reliable multiscale representation of simulated CR signals on a wider domain of frequency and amplitude ratios.

Empirical mode decomposition of respiratory inductive plethysmographic signals for stroke volume variations monitoring: respiratory protocol and comparison with impedance cardiography

We investigate Respiratory Inductive Plethysmography (RIP) to estimate cardiac activity from thoracic volume variations and study cardio-respiratory interactions. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the ability of RIP to monitor stroke volume (SV) variations, with reference to impedance cardiography (IMP). Five healthy volunteers in seated and supine positions were asked to blow into a manometer in order to induce significant SV decreases. Time-scale analysis was applied on calibrated RIP signals to extract cardiac volume signals. Averaged SV values, in quasi-stationary states at rest and during the respiratory maneuvers, were then estimated from these cardiac signals and from IMP signals simultaneously acquired. SV variations between rest and maneuvers were finally evaluated for both techniques. We show that SV values as well as SV variations are correlated between RIP and IMP estimations, suggesting that RIP could be used for SV variations monitoring.

Hilbert-Huang transform for analysis of heart rate variability in cardiac health

This paper introduces a modified technique based on Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) to improve the spectrum estimates of heart rate variability (HRV). In order to make the beat-to-beat (RR) interval be a function of time and produce an evenly sampled time series, we first adopt a preprocessing method to interpolate and resample the original RR interval. Then, the HHT, which is based on the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) approach to decompose the HRV signal into several monocomponent signals that become analytic signals by means of Hilbert transform, is proposed to extract the features of preprocessed time series and to characterize the dynamic behaviors of parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system of heart. At last, the frequency behaviors of the Hilbert spectrum and Hilbert marginal spectrum (HMS) are studied to estimate the spectral traits of HRV signals. In this paper, two kinds of experiment data are used to compare our method with the conventional power spectral density (PSD) estimation. The analysis results of the simulated HRV series show that interpolation and resampling are basic requirements for HRV data processing, and HMS is superior to PSD estimation. On the other hand, in order to further prove the superiority of our approach, real HRV signals are collected from seven young health subjects under the condition that autonomic nervous system (ANS) is blocked by certain acute selective blocking drugs: atropine and metoprolol. The high-frequency power/total power ratio and low-frequency power/high-frequency power ratio indicate that compared with the Fourier spectrum based on principal dynamic mode, our method is more sensitive and effective to identify the low-frequency and high-frequency bands of HRV.

Arrhythmia ECG noise reduction by ensemble empirical mode decomposition

A novel noise filtering algorithm based on ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) is proposed to remove artifacts in electrocardiogram (ECG) traces. Three noise patterns with different power—50 Hz, EMG, and base line wander – were embedded into simulated and real ECG signals. Traditional IIR filter, Wiener filter, empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and EEMD were used to compare filtering performance. Mean square error between clean and filtered ECGs was used as filtering performance indexes. Results showed that high noise reduction is the major advantage of the EEMD based filter, especially on arrhythmia ECGs.
