Analysis of Impact of Bioimpedance on Performance of Implant Coil of Artificial Retina for Optimizing Q Factor & Bandwidth

Spiral coils are indispensable part of implantable electronics for facilitating wireless power and data transfer. Although many advanced high Q receiver design have emerged, implementing and retaining high Q in biological medium so as to improve link efficiency is challenging. This article bridges the gap between advanced techniques towards improving link efficiency and the tissue losses that deteriorates the Q factor of coil in heterogeneous tissue medium. The purpose of this research is to improve the Q factor and bandwidth of the coil in tissue medium by reducing the net conductance of the coil in tissue medium, which is comparable to the net conductance in air. Bioimpedance of each layer of the eye is modelled to identify the highly capacitive and highly conductive tissue layer in the eye. To investigate the worst-case and best-case scenario, Q factor and bandwidth of the implant coil is analysed in the eye with and without aqueous humor which is a highly conductive and capacitive tissue layer in the eye. The coil is encapsulated with breast fat which possess lowest permittivity of all body tissue. After removing the high conductive tissue layer from the implantation zone, the Q factor and bandwidth of the coil is improved by 87.5% and 97.7% respectively. It is observed that 100% Q at 10 MHz and 76.75% of bandwidth is recovered in tissue medium after using breast fat as encapsulation layer. This demonstration of coil for various test cases in tissue medium aids to device a reliable, safe and efficient wireless power/data transfer system for artificial retina.

A soft decoding algorithm and hardware implementation for the visual prosthesis based on high order soft demodulation

Background

High order modulation and demodulation technology can solve the frequency requirement between the wireless energy transmission and data communication. In order to achieve reliable wireless data communication based on high order modulation technology for visual prosthesis, this work proposed a Reed–Solomon (RS) error correcting code (ECC) circuit on the basis of differential amplitude and phase shift keying (DAPSK) soft demodulation. Firstly, recognizing the weakness of the traditional DAPSK soft demodulation algorithm based on division that is complex for hardware implementation, an improved phase soft demodulation algorithm for visual prosthesis to reduce the hardware complexity is put forward. Based on this new algorithm, an improved RS soft decoding method is hence proposed. In this new decoding method, the combination of Chase algorithm and hard decoding algorithms is used to achieve soft decoding. In order to meet the requirements of implantable visual prosthesis, the method to calculate reliability of symbol-level based on multiplication of bit reliability is derived, which reduces the testing vectors number of Chase algorithm. The proposed algorithms are verified by MATLAB simulation and FPGA experimental results. During MATLAB simulation, the biological channel attenuation property model is added into the ECC circuit.

Results

The data rate is 8 Mbps in the MATLAB simulation and FPGA experiments. MATLAB simulation results show that the improved phase soft demodulation algorithm proposed in this paper saves hardware resources without losing bit error rate (BER) performance. Compared with the traditional demodulation circuit, the coding gain of the ECC circuit has been improved by about 3 dB under the same BER of \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$10^{-6}$$\end{document}10-6. The FPGA experimental results show that under the condition of data demodulation error with wireless coils 3 cm away, the system can correct it. The greater the distance, the higher the BER. Then we use a bit error rate analyzer to measure BER of the demodulation circuit and the RS ECC circuit with different distance of two coils. And the experimental results show that the RS ECC circuit has about an order of magnitude lower BER than the demodulation circuit when under the same coils distance. Therefore, the RS ECC circuit has more higher reliability of the communication in the system.

Conclusions

The improved phase soft demodulation algorithm and soft decoding algorithm proposed in this paper enables data communication that is more reliable than other demodulation system, which also provide a significant reference for further study to the visual prosthesis system.

Coupling invariant inductive link for wireless power delivery to a retinal prosthesis

Inductive links are used in various applications to transfer power and data wirelessly. To achieve optimal performance in terms of voltage gain and maximum power transfer, these links are often operated at high coupling regime or under resonant frequency condition. However, these conditions may vary due to variations in the link itself or load. As a result, the link performance drops and the design of driving circuit become more complicated in order to compensate for the reduction in performance. In this work, we investigate an inductive link that has constant coupling. The tradeoff for invariant coupling is a reduction in coupling coefficient. In this study, we found that a reduction of 66 % exist between the traditional inductive link and our design. However, the advantage of coupling invariance outweighs the negative effect of large coil separation and varying conditions of a traditional one-pair coil link. The new link has the potential for powering a retinal implant.

High performance 3-coil wireless power transfer system for the 512-electrode epiretinal prosthesis

The next-generation retinal prostheses feature high image resolution and chronic implantation. These features demand the delivery of power as high as 100 mW to be wireless and efficient. A common solution is the 2-coil inductive power link, used by current retinal prostheses. This power link tends to include a larger-size extraocular receiver coil coupled to the external transmitter coil, and the receiver coil is connected to the intraocular electrodes through a trans-sclera trans-choroid cable. In the long-term implantation of the device, the cable may cause hypotony (low intraocular pressure) and infection. However, when a 2-coil system is constructed from a small-size intraocular receiver coil, the efficiency drops drastically which may induce over heat dissipation and electromagnetic field exposure. Our previous 2-coil system achieved only 7% power transfer. This paper presents a fully intraocular and highly efficient wireless power transfer system, by introducing another inductive coupling link to bypass the trans-sclera trans-choroid cable. With the specific equivalent load of our customized 512-electrode stimulator, the current 3-coil inductive link was measured to have the overall power transfer efficiency around 36%, with 1-inch separation in saline. The high efficiency will favorably reduce the heat dissipation and electromagnetic field exposure to surrounding human tissues. The effect of the eyeball rotation on the power transfer efficiency was investigated as well. The efficiency can still maintain 14.7% with left and right deflection of 30 degree during normal use. The surgical procedure for the coils' implantation into the porcine eye was also demonstrated.
