Noise Reduction Technique for Single-Color Video Plethysmography Using Singular Spectrum Analysis

Non-contact heart rate estimation based on singular spectrum component reconstruction using low-rank matrix and autocorrelation

The remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) based on cameras, a technology for extracting pulse wave from videos, has been proved to be an effective heart rate (HR) monitoring method and has great potential in many fields; such as health monitoring. However, the change of facial color intensity caused by cardiovascular activities is weak. Environmental illumination changes and subjects' facial movements will produce irregular noise in rPPG signals, resulting in distortion of heart rate pulse signals and affecting the accuracy of heart rate measurement. Given the irregular noises such as motion artifacts and illumination changes in rPPG signals, this paper proposed a new method named LA-SSA. It combines low-rank sparse matrix decomposition and autocorrelation function with singular spectrum analysis (SSA). The low-rank sparse matrix decomposition is employed to globally optimize the components of the rPPG signal obtained by SSA, and some irregular noise is removed. Then, the autocorrelation function is used to optimize the global optimization results locally. The periodic components related to the heartbeat signal are selected, and the denoised rPPG signal is obtained by weighted reconstruction with a singular value ratio. The experiment using UBFC-RPPG and PURE database is performed to assess the performance of the method proposed in this paper. The average absolute error was 1.37 bpm, the 95% confidence interval was -7.56 bpm to 6.45 bpm, and the Pearson correlation coefficient was 98%, superior to most existing video-based heart rate extraction methods. Experimental results show that the proposed method can estimate HR effectively.

Modulation Model of the Photoplethysmography Signal for Vital Sign Extraction

This paper introduces an amplitude and frequency modulation (AM-FM) model to characterize the photoplethysmography (PPG) signal. The model indicates that the PPG signal spectrum contains one dominant frequency component - the heart rate (HR), which is guarded by two weaker frequency components on both sides; the distance from the dominant component to the guard components represents the respiratory rate (RR). Based on this model, an efficient algorithm is proposed to estimate both HR and RR by searching for the dominant frequency component and two guard components. The proposed method is performed in the frequency domain to estimate RR, which is more robust to additive noise than the prior art based on temporal features. Experiments were conducted on two types of PPG signals collected with a contact sensor (an oximeter) and a contactless visible imaging sensor (a color camera), respectively. The PPG signal from the contactless sensor is much noisier than the signal from the contact sensor. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, including under relatively noisy scenarios.

Contact-free sensor signals as a new digital biomarker for cardiovascular disease: chances and challenges

Multiple sensor systems are used to monitor physiological parameters, activities of daily living and behaviour. Digital biomarkers can be extracted and used as indicators for health and disease. Signal acquisition is either by object sensors, wearable sensors, or contact-free sensors including cameras, pressure sensors, non-contact capacitively coupled electrocardiogram (cECG), radar, and passive infrared motion sensors. This review summarizes contemporary knowledge of the use of contact-free sensors for patients with cardiovascular disease and healthy subjects following the PRISMA declaration. Chances and challenges are discussed. Thirty-six publications were rated to be of medium (31) or high (5) relevance. Results are best for monitoring of heart rate and heart rate variability using cardiac vibration, facial camera, or cECG; for respiration using cardiac vibration, cECG, or camera; and for sleep using ballistocardiography. Early results from radar sensors to monitor vital signs are promising. Contact-free sensors are little invasive, well accepted and suitable for long-term monitoring in particular in patient's homes. A major problem are motion artefacts. Results from long-term use in larger patient cohorts are still lacking, but the technology is about to emerge the market and we can expect to see more clinical results in the near future.
