Investigation of Autostereoscopic Displays Based on Various Display Technologies

The autostereoscopic display is a promising way towards three-dimensional-display technology since it allows humans to perceive stereoscopic images with naked eyes. However, it faces great challenges from low resolution, narrow viewing angle, ghost images, eye strain, and fatigue. Nowadays, the prevalent liquid crystal display (LCD), the organic light-emitting diode (OLED), and the emerging micro light-emitting diode (Micro-LED) offer more powerful tools to tackle these challenges. First, we comprehensively review various implementations of autostereoscopic displays. Second, based on LCD, OLED, and Micro-LED, their pros and cons for the implementation of autostereoscopic displays are compared. Lastly, several novel implementations of autostereoscopic displays with Micro-LED are proposed: a Micro-LED light-stripe backlight with an LCD, a high-resolution Micro-LED display with a micro-lens array or a high-speed scanning barrier/deflector, and a transparent floating display. This work could be a guidance for Micro-LED applications on autostereoscopic displays.

Multi-View 3D Integral Imaging Systems Using Projectors and Mobile Devices

Glassless 3D displays using projectors and mobile phones based on integral imaging technology have been developed. Three-dimensional image files are created from the 2D images captured by a conventional camera. Large size 3D images using four HD and Ultra HD 4K projectors are created with a viewing angle of 35 degrees and a large depth. Three-dimensional images are demonstrated using optimized lenticular lenses and mobile smartphones, such as LG and Samsung with resolution 2560 × 1440, and 4K Sony with resolution 3840 × 2160.

Subpixel area-based evaluation for crosstalk suppression in quasi-three-dimensional displays

A subpixel area-based evaluation method for an improved slanted lenticular film that minimizes the crosstalk in a quasi-three-dimensional (Q3D) display is proposed in this paper. To identify an optimal slant angle of the film, a subpixel area-based measurement is derived to evaluate the crosstalk among viewing regions of the intended subpixel and adjacent unintended subpixel by taking the real subpixel shape and black matrix into consideration. The subpixel mapping, which corresponds to the optimal slant angle of the film, can then be determined. Meanwhile, the viewing zone characteristics are analyzed to balance the light intensity in both right and left eye channels. A compact and portable Q3D system has been built and appropriate experiments have been applied. The results indicate that significant improvements in both crosstalk and resolution can be obtained with the proposed technique.

Three-dimensional display optimization with measurable energy model

3D displays have been developed to provide users with a realistic 3D experience. Although various studies have endeavored to establish design principles for 3D displays, a generalized optimized model does not exist in the literature thus far. These circumstances have led to the manufacture of independently qualified 3D products, but expanding these applications remains a challenge. In this paper, we suggest a measurement model and an optimization method for optimized 3D display design. The proposed optimization can be applied to rotatable 3D displays and various pixel structures. Our experimental results based on manufactured displays and simulations confirm the proposed theory of optimization model.

Glasses-free randot stereotest

We proposed a glasses-free randot stereotest using a multiview display system. We designed a four-view parallax barrier system and proposed the use of a random-dot multigram as a set of view images for the glasses-free randot stereotest. The glasses-free randot stereotest can be used to verify the effect of glasses in a stereopsis experience. Furthermore, the proposed system is convertible between two-view and four-view structures so that the motion parallax effect could be verified within the system. We discussed the design principles and the method used to generate images in detail and implemented a glasses-free randot stereotest system with a liquid crystal display panel and a customized parallax barrier. We also developed graphical user interfaces and a method for their calibration for practical usage. We performed experiments with five adult subjects with normal vision. The experimental results show that the proposed system provides a stereopsis experience to the subjects and is consistent with the glasses-type randot stereotest and the Frisby–Davis test. The implemented system is free from monocular cues and provides binocular disparity only. The crosstalk of the system is about 6.42% for four-view and 4.17% for two-view, the time required for one measurement is less than 20 s, and the minimum angular disparity that the system can provide is about 23 arc sec.
