Clinical Effect of Virtual Reality Technology on Rehabilitation Training of Sports Injury

In order to make most patients recover most of their limb functions after rehabilitation training, virtual reality technology is an emerging human-computer interaction technology, which uses the computer and the corresponding application software to build the virtual reality environment. Completing the training tasks in the virtual environment attracts the patients to conduct repeated training in the game and task-based training mode and gradually realizes the rehabilitation training goals. For the rehabilitation population with certain exercise ability, the kinematics of human upper limbs is mainly analyzed, and the virtual reality system based on HTC VIVE is developed. The feasibility and work efficiency of the upper limb rehabilitation training system were verified by experiments. Adult volunteers who are healthy and need rehabilitation training to participate in the experiment were recruited, and experimental data were recorded. The virtual reality upper limb rehabilitation system was a questionnaire. By extracting the motion data, the system application effect is analyzed and evaluated by the simulation diagram. Follow-up results of rehabilitation training showed that the average score of healthy subjects was more than 4 points and 3.8 points per question. Therefore, it is feasible to perform upper limb rehabilitation training using the HTC VIVE virtual reality rehabilitation system.

Stand Trainer With Applied Forces at the Pelvis and Trunk: Response to Perturbations and Assist-As-Needed Support

Functional rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injury remains a current challenge. Training these patients to successfully stand is the first step towards restoring advanced skills such as walking. To address this need, we have developed a novel robotic stand trainer that can apply controlled forces on the trunk and the pelvis of a user, while controlling the knee angle. The stand trainer utilizes cables to apply assistive, resistive, or perturbation forces at the trunk, pelvis, and the knees, simultaneously. We have conducted a human study to validate the system. In this study, we applied multi-direction perturbation forces either at the pelvis or the trunk while assist-as-needed forces were applied to the other segment to keep balance. This study characterizes the human kinematics and measures of balance under the perturbations and assistive forces on the human body. Results shows that the level of force-field assistance (trunk or pelvis) directly affects the motion of the trunk, pelvis, and center of pressure. This provides a quantitative framework to restore balance in patients while providing assistance only when needed. This stand trainer can potentially free up therapists to attend to higher level rehabilitation goals and objectively assist patients to engage in interventions that challenge both their musculoskeletal and sensorimotor impairments.

RabbitRun: An Immersive Virtual Reality Game for Promoting Physical Activities Among People with Low Back Pain

Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most common problems among adults. The usual physiotherapy treatment is to perform physical exercises. However, some LBP patients have false beliefs regarding their pain and they tend to avoid physical movements which might increase their pain and disability. Virtual reality (VR) has proven to be an effective intervention in improving motor functions and reducing pain perception. Existing VR interventions for LBP rehabilitation were based on a non-immersive VR, whereas to effectively reduce the pain intensity, we need an immersive VR. In this paper, we introduce the development and evaluation of a serious game called RabbitRun with an immersive experience to engage the patients in a virtual environment and distract them from the pain while performing LBP exercises. The initial usability evaluation results suggest that RabbitRun game is enjoyable and acceptable. The game is easy to play and learn and most of the participants are willing to play the game at home. This solution will enhance the rehabilitation outcome since the patients who are suffering from LBP can use the system at their home and train more for long period of time using a smartphone and low-cost virtual reality device, such as Google Cardboard.
