Development and Improvement of a Piezoelectrically Driven Miniature Robot

In this paper, we proposed a miniature quadrupedal piezoelectric robot with a mass of 1.8 g and a body length of 4.6 cm. The robot adopts a novel spatial parallel mechanism as its transmission. Each leg of the robot has two degrees of freedom (DOFs): swing and lift. The trajectory necessary for walking is achieved by the appropriate phasing of these two DOFs. A new manufacturing method for piezoelectric actuators was developed. During the stacking process, discrete patterned PZT pieces are used to avoid dielectric failure caused by laser cutting. Copper-clad FR-4 is used as the solder pad instead of copper foil, making the connection between the pad and the actuator more reliable. The lift powertrain of the robot was modeled and the link length of the powertrain was optimized based on the model. The maximum output force of each leg can reach 26 mN under optimized design parameters, which is 1.38 times the required force for successful walking. The frequency response of the powertrain was measured and fitted to the second-order system, which enabled increased leg amplitudes near the powertrain resonance of approximately 70 Hz with adjusted drive signals. The maximum speed of the robot without load reached 48.66 cm/s (10.58 body lengths per second) and the payload capacity can reach 5.5 g (3.05 times its mass) near the powertrain resonance.

An Ultra High Gain Converter for Driving HASEL Actuator Used in Soft Mobile Robots

Soft robots have the potential to fundamentally change interactions between robots and the surrounding environment, and between robots and animals, and robots and humans in ways that today's hard robots are incapable of doing. However, to realize this potential, soft robot actuators require extremely high voltage supplies of more than 4 kV. The electronics that can satisfy this need currently are either too large and bulky or unable to achieve the high power efficiency required for mobile systems. To meet this challenge, this paper conceptualizes, analyzes, designs, and validates a hardware prototype of an ultra-high gain (UHG) converter that can support extremely large conversion ratios up to ∼1000× to provide up to 5 kV output voltage from an input voltage of ∼5-10 V. This converter is demonstrated to be able to drive HASEL (Hydraulically Amplified Self-Healing Electrostatic) actuators, a promising candidate to realize future soft mobile robotic fishes, from an input voltage range of a 1-cell battery pack. The circuit topology employs a unique hybrid combination of a high-gain switched magnetic element (HGSME) and a diode and capacitor-based voltage multiplier rectifier (DCVMR) to enable compact magnetic elements, efficient soft-charging in all flying capacitors, and adjustable output voltage capability with simple duty-cycle modulation. Achieving an efficiency of 78.2% at 15 W output power, while providing 3.85 kV output from 8.5 V input, the proposed UGH converter proves to be a promising candidate for future untethered soft robots.

Crab-inspired compliant leg design method for adaptive locomotion of a multi-legged robot

Chinese mitten crabhas unique limb structures composed of a hard exoskeleton and flexible muscles. They enable the crab to locomote adaptively and safely on various terrains. In this work, we investigated the limb structures, motion principle, and gaits of the crab using a high-speed camera and a press machine. Then, a novel compliant robot leg design method is proposed, inspired by the crab limb. The leg comprises six hard scleromeres and a flexible thin-wall spring steel sheet (FSSS) mimicking the exoskeleton and muscle. The scleromeres connected one by one with rotational joints are designed with slots. The front end of the FSSS is fixed on the scleromere close to the ground. The rear end crosses the slots and is mounted at the shaft of a linear actuator installed at the rear scleromere. The leg bends and stretches when the actuator pushes and pulls the FSSS, respectively. The kinematic modeling, rigid-flexible coupling dynamic simulations, and leg prototype tests are conducted, which verify the leg design approach. Thirdly, we put forward a multi-legged robot with eight compliant legs and design its gait using the gaits of the crab. Finally, the robot's performance is evaluated, including the capabilities of walking on different terrains at adjustable speeds and body heights, traversing low channels, walking on slopes, and carrying loads. The results prove that the single-motor-actuated compliant legs and their dynamic coupling with the rigid robot body frame can enable them to have the ground clearance ability and realize the adaptive walking of the robot. The leg design methodology can be used to design multi-legged robots with the merits of compact, light, low mechanical complexity, high safety, and easy to control, for many applications, such as environmental monitoring, search and rescue.

Gait and locomotion analysis of a soft-hybrid multi-legged modular miniature robot

The locomotion performance of the current legged miniature robots remains inferior compared to even the most simple insects. The inferiority has led researchers to utilize biological principles and control in their designs, often resulting in improved performance and robot capabilities. Additionally, optimizing the locomotion patterns compatible with the robot's limitations (such as the gaits achievable by the robot) improves the performance significantly and results in a robot operating with its maximum capabilities. This paper studies the locomotion characteristics of running/walkingn-legged modular miniature robots with soft or rigid module connections. The locomotion study is done using the presented dynamic model, and the results are verified using a legged modular miniature robot with soft and rigid backbones (SMoLBot). The optimum foot contact sequences for ann-legged robot with different compliance values between the modules are derived using the locomotion analyses and the dynamic and kinematic formulations. Our investigations determine unique optimum foot contact sequences for multi-legged robots with different body compliances and module numbers. Locomotion analyses of a multi-legged robot with different backbones operating with optimum gaits show two main motion characteristics; the rigid robots minimize the number of leg-ground contacts to increase velocity, whereas soft-backbone robots use a lift-jump-fall motion sequence to maximize the translational speeds. These two behaviors are similar between different soft-backbone and rigid-backbone robots; however, the optimal foot contact sequences are different and unpredictable.
