Advanced hybrid attention-based deep learning network with heuristic algorithm for adaptive CT and PET image fusion in lung cancer detection

Lung cancer is one of the most deadly diseases in the world. Lung cancer detection can save the patient's life. Despite being the best imaging tool in the medical sector, clinicians find it challenging to interpret and detect cancer from Computed Tomography (CT) scan data. One of the most effective ways for the diagnosis of certain malignancies like lung tumours is Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging. So many diagnosis models have been implemented nowadays to diagnose various diseases. Early lung cancer identification is very important for predicting the severity level of lung cancer in cancer patients. To explore the effective model, an image fusion-based detection model is proposed for lung cancer detection using an improved heuristic algorithm of the deep learning model. Firstly, the PET and CT images are gathered from the internet. Further, these two collected images are fused for further process by using the Adaptive Dilated Convolution Neural Network (AD-CNN), in which the hyperparameters are tuned by the Modified Initial Velocity-based Capuchin Search Algorithm (MIV-CapSA). Subsequently, the abnormal regions are segmented by influencing the TransUnet3+. Finally, the segmented images are fed into the Hybrid Attention-based Deep Networks (HADN) model, encompassed with Mobilenet and Shufflenet. Therefore, the effectiveness of the novel detection model is analyzed using various metrics compared with traditional approaches. At last, the outcome evinces that it aids in early basic detection to treat the patients effectively.

Understand how machine learning impact lung cancer research from 2010 to 2021: A bibliometric analysis

Advances in lung cancer research applying machine learning (ML) technology have generated many relevant literature. However, there is absence of bibliometric analysis review that aids a comprehensive understanding of this field and its progress. Present article for the first time performed a bibliometric analysis to clarify research status and focus from 2010 to 2021. In the analysis, a total of 2,312 relevant literature were searched and retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database. We conducted a bibliometric analysis and further visualization. During that time, exponentially growing annual publication and our model have shown a flourishing research prospect. Annual citation reached the peak in 2017. Researchers from United States and China have produced most of the relevant literature and strongest partnership between them. Medical image analysis and Nature appeared to bring more attention to the public. The computer-aided diagnosis, precision medicine, and survival prediction were the focus of research, reflecting the development trend at that period. ML did make a big difference in lung cancer research in the past decade.

Lung Nodule Detection from Feature Engineering to Deep Learning in Thoracic CT Images: a Comprehensive Review

This paper presents a systematic review of the literature focused on the lung nodule detection in chest computed tomography (CT) images. Manual detection of lung nodules by the radiologist is a sequential and time-consuming process. The detection is subjective and depends on the radiologist's experiences. Owing to the variation in shapes and appearances of a lung nodule, it is very difficult to identify the proper location of the nodule from a huge number of slices generated by the CT scanner. Small nodules (< 10 mm in diameter) may be missed by this manual detection process. Therefore, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system acts as a "second opinion" for the radiologists, by making final decision quickly with higher accuracy and greater confidence. The goal of this survey work is to present the current state of the artworks and their progress towards lung nodule detection to the researchers and readers in this domain. This review paper has covered the published works from 2009 to April 2018. Different nodule detection approaches are described elaborately in this work. Recently, it is observed that deep learning (DL)-based approaches are applied extensively for nodule detection and characterization. Therefore, emphasis has been given to convolutional neural network (CNN)-based DL approaches by describing different CNN-based networks.

Illustration of the obstacles in computerized lung segmentation using examples

PURPOSE

Automated lung volume segmentation is often a preprocessing step in quantitative lung computed tomography (CT) image analysis. The objective of this study is to identify the obstacles in computerized lung volume segmentation and illustrate those explicitly using real examples. Awareness of these "difficult" cases may be helpful for the development of a robust and consistent lung segmentation algorithm.

METHODS

We collected a large diverse dataset consisting of 2768 chest CT examinations acquired on 2292 subjects from various sources. These examinations cover a wide range of diseases, including lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, human immunodeficiency virus, pulmonary embolism, pneumonia, asthma, and interstitial lung disease (ILD). The CT acquisition protocols, including dose, scanners, and reconstruction kernels, vary significantly. After the application of a "neutral" thresholding-based approach to the collected CT examinations in a batch manner, the failed cases were subjectively identified and classified into different subgroups.

RESULTS

Totally, 121 failed examinations are identified, corresponding to a failure ratio of 4.4%. These failed cases are summarized as 11 different subgroups, which is further classified into 3 broad categories: (1) failure caused by diseases, (2) failure caused by anatomy variability, and (3) failure caused by external factors. The failure percentages in these categories are 62.0%, 32.2%, and 5.8%, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

The presence of specific lung diseases (e.g., pulmonary nodules, ILD, and pneumonia) is the primary issue in computerized lung segmentation. The segmentation failures caused by external factors and anatomy variety are relatively low but unavoidable in practice. It is desirable to develop robust schemes to handle these issues in a single pass when a large number of CT examinations need to be analyzed.

Computer-aided diagnosis: how to move from the laboratory to the clinic

Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD), encompassing computer-aided detection and quantification, is an established and rapidly growing field of research. In daily practice, however, most radiologists do not yet use CAD routinely. This article discusses how to move CAD from the laboratory to the clinic. The authors review the principles of CAD for lesion detection and for quantification and illustrate the state-of-the-art with various examples. The requirements that radiologists have for CAD are discussed: sufficient performance, no increase in reading time, seamless workflow integration, regulatory approval, and cost efficiency. Performance is still the major bottleneck for many CAD systems. Novel ways of using CAD, extending the traditional paradigm of displaying markers for a second look, may be the key to using the technology effectively. The most promising strategy to improve CAD is the creation of publicly available databases for training and validation. This can identify the most fruitful new research directions, and provide a platform to combine multiple approaches for a single task to create superior algorithms.
