A 19 μW, 50 kS/s, 0.008-400 V/s Cyclic Voltammetry Readout Interface With a Current Feedback Loop and On-Chip Pattern Generation

Wireless, Multi-Sensor System-on-Chip for pH and Amperometry Powered by Body Heat

This article presents a body-heat-powered, multi-sensor SoC for measurement of chemical and biological sensors. Our approach combines analog front-end sensor interfaces for voltage- (V-to-I) and current-mode (potentiostat) sensors with a relaxation oscillator (RxO) readout scheme targeting << 10 μW power consumption. The design was implemented as a complete sensor readout system-on-chip, including a low-voltage energy harvester compatible with thermoelectric generation and a near-field wireless transmitter. A prototype IC was fabricated in a 0.18 μm CMOS process as a proof-of-concept. As measured, full-range pH measurement consumes 2.2 μW at maximum, where the RxO consumes 0.7 μW and measured linearity of the readout circuit demonstrates R 2 0.999. Glucose measurement is also demonstrated using an on-chip potentiostat circuit as the input of the RxO, with a readout power consumption as low as 1.4 μ W. As a final proof-of-principle, both pH and glucose measurement are demonstrated while powering from body heat using a centimeter-scale thermoelectric generator on the skin surface, and pH measurement is further demonstrated with an on-chip transmitter for wireless data transmission. Long-term, the presented approach may enable a variety of biological, electrochemical, and physical sensor readout schemes with microwatt operation for batteryless and power autonomous sensor systems.

A Multimodality Electrochemical and Impedance Spectroscopy System-on-a-Chip With Temperature Sensing and Impedance-Boosting Techniques

This article presents a multimodal electrochemical sensing system-on-chip (SoC), including the functions of cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and temperature sensing. CV readout circuitry achieves an adaptive readout current range of 145.5 dB through an automatic range adjustment and resolution scaling technique. EIS has an impedance resolution of 9.2 m Ω/√ Hz at a sweep frequency of 10 kHz and an output current of up to 120 μA. With an impedance boost mechanism, the maximum detectable load impedance is extended to 22.95 k Ω, while the total harmonic distortion is less than 1%. A resistor-based temperature sensor using a swing-boosted relaxation oscillator can achieve a resolution of 31 mK in 0-85 °C. The design is implemented in a 0.18 μm CMOS process. The total power consumption is 1 mW.

A Reconfigurable Tri-Mode Frequency-Locked Loop Readout Circuit for Biosensor Interfaces

In this article, a frequency-locked loop (FLL) based multimodal readout integrated circuit (IC) for interfacing with off-chip temperature, electrochemical, and pH sensors is presented. By reconfiguring its switched-capacitor feedback network, the readout circuit is able to measure resistance, current, and voltage without additional active analog front-end circuits. A prototype IC was fabricated in a 0.18 μm CMOS process. Measured results show that when measuring resistance, the input-referred resistance resolution is 10.5 Ω for 100 Hz integration bandwidth. Using an off-chip thermistor, the readout circuit covers a temperature range of 0-75 °C and achieves an equivalent temperature resolution of 16.4 mKrms. In current mode, the readout circuit has an input range of 0.5μA and an input-referred current noise as low as 40.6 pArms for 100 Hz bandwidth. Interfacing with an on-chip potentiostat, glucose chronoamperometry is demonstrated. In voltage mode, a minimum input-referred voltage noise of 31.7 μVrms is achieved, and the IC can measure a pH range from 1.6 to 12 using a commercial pH probe. At a 1.2 V supply, power consumption of the readout circuit is below 10 μW for all three measurement modes. Additionally, the prototype IC includes an integrated wireless transmitter that implements on-off keying modulation, and a wireless multimodal sensing system utilizing the FLL-based readout circuit is demonstrated.

A Wireless Soil pH and Conductance Monitoring Chip Powered by Soil Microbial and Photovoltaic Energy Cells

This paper presents an energy-autonomous wireless soil pH and electrical conductance measurement IC powered by soil microbial and photovoltaic energy. The chip integrates highly efficient dual-input, dual-output power management units, sensor readout circuits, a wireless receiver, and a transmitter. The design scavenges ambient energy with a maximal power point tracking mechanism while achieving a peak efficiency of 81.3% and the efficiency is more than 50% over the 0.05-14 mW load range. The sensor readout IC achieves a sensitivity of -8.8 kHz/pH and 6 kHz·m/S, a noise floor of 0.92 x 10^-3 pH value, and 1.4 mS/m conductance. To avoid interference, a 433 MHz transceiver incorporates chirp modulation and on-off keying (OOK) modulation for data uplink and downlink communication. The receiver sensitivity is -80 dBm, and the output transmission power is -4 dBm. The uplink data rate is 100 kb/s using burst chirp modulation and gated Class E PA, while the downlink data rate is 10 kb/s with a self-frequency tracking mixer-first receiver.

A 26.5 pArms Neurotransmitter Front-End With Class-AB Background Subtraction

This paper presents an analog front-end (AFE) for fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) with analog background subtraction using a pseudo-differential sensing scheme to cancel the large non-faradaic current before seeing the front-end. As a result, the AFE can be compact and low-power compared to conventional FSCV AFEs with dedicated digital back-ends to digitize and subtract the background from subsequent recordings. The reported AFE, fabricated in a 0.18- μ m CMOS process, consists of a class-AB common-mode rejection circuit, a low-input-impedance current conveyor, and a 1^st-order current-mode delta-sigma (ΔΣ) modulator with an infinite impulse response quantizer. This AFE achieves an effective dynamic range of 83 dB with a state-of-the-art 39.2 pA_rms input-referred noise when loaded with a 1 nF input capacitance (26.5 pA_rms open-circuit) across a 5 kHz bandwidth while consuming an average power of 3.7 μW. This design was tested with carbon-fiber microelectrodes scanned at 300 V/s using flow-injection of dopamine, a key neurotransmitter.

A 30.3 fA/√Hz Biosensing Current Front-End With 139 dB Cross-Scale Dynamic Range

This paper presents an 8-channel array of low-noise (30.3 fA/√Hz) current sensing front-ends with on-chip microelectrode electrochemical sensors. The analog front-end (AFE) consists of a 1^st-order continuous-time delta-sigma (CT ΔΣ) modulator that achieves 123 fA sensitivity over a 10 Hz bandwidth and 139 dB cross-scale dynamic range with a 2-bit programmable current reference. A digital predictor and tri-level pulse width modulated (PWM) current-steering DAC realize the equivalent performance of a multi-bit ΔΣ in an area- and power-efficient manner. The AFE consumes 50.3 µW and 0.11 mm² per readout channel. The proposed platform was used to observe protein-ligand interactions in real-time using transient induced molecular electronic spectroscopy (TIMES), a label- and immobilization-free biosensing technique.
