Analysis on real-time phase delay in an interferometric FBG sensor array using polarization switching and the PGC hybrid processing method

The polarization switching and phase generated carrier (PS-PGC) hybrid method is typically adopted to control signal fading induced by fiber birefringence and to precisely demodulate signals in interferometric fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor arrays. Unlike simple PGC demodulation, the real-time phase delay between the detected interference and the PGC carrier in the hybrid method has more adverse effects as both demodulation accuracy and background noise can be deteriorated, which may invalidate the polarization switching (PS) method. Aiming at this issue, the real-time phase delay and its compensation method were analyzed in detail in this paper. The features of the real-time phase delay in the PS-PGC hybrid method were summarized and the differences among polarization channels were investigated. Theoretical analysis indicated that the real-time phase delay mainly affected the interference complex synthesis (ICS) procedure, ultimately bringing about errors in the PS-PGC algorithm. The method for demodulating the real-time phase delay from sampled interference was presented, which provided the key compensation parameter. Experimental results showed that the compensation method could greatly improve the stability of the demodulated signal and suppress the sensor background phase noise. The amplitude of the demodulated signal was stabilized with a fluctuation less than ± 0.75dB and a noise suppression of 5dB. The acceptable compensation error was also analyzed.

Real-time phase delay compensation of PGC demodulation in sinusoidal phase-modulation interferometer for nanometer displacement measurement

As the phase delay between the carrier component of the detected interference signal and the carrier has adverse effect for phase generated carrier (PGC) demodulation, it is essential to compensate the phase delay to improve the accuracy of precision displacement measurement in sinusoidal phase-modulation interferometer (SPMI). In this paper, a real-time phase delay compensation method is proposed by regulating a compensating phase introduced to the carrier to maximize the output of the low pass filter so as to make the carrier synchronize with the interference signal. The influence of phase delay for PGC demodulation is analyzed and the method for real-time phase delay compensation is described in detail. The simulation of the method was performed to verify the validity of the phase delay compensation algorithm. A SPMI using an EOM was constructed and several comparative experiments were carried out to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method. The experimental results show that the phase delay can be compensated accurately in real time, and nanometer accuracy is achieved for precision displacement measurement.

Wide-band current preamplifier for conductance measurements with large input capacitance

A wide-band current preamplifier based on a composite operational amplifier is proposed. It has been shown that the bandwidth of the preamplifier can be significantly increased by enhancing the effective open-loop gain. The described 10(7) V/A current gain preamplifier had the bandwidth of about 100 kHz with the 1 nF input shunt capacitance. The measured preamplifier current noise was 46 fA/√Hz at 1 kHz, close to the design noise minimum. The voltage noise was found to be about 2.9 nV/√Hz at 1 kHz, which is in a good agreement with the value expected for the particular operational amplifier used in the input stage. By analysing the total produced noise we found that the optimal frequency range suitable for the fast lock-in measurements is from 1 kHz to 2 kHz. To obtain the same signal-to-noise ratio, the reported preamplifier requires ~10% of the integration time needed in measurements made with a conventional preamplifier.
