Skin Cancer Detection and Classification Using Neural Network Algorithms: A Systematic Review

In recent years, there has been growing interest in the use of computer-assisted technology for early detection of skin cancer through the analysis of dermatoscopic images. However, the accuracy illustrated behind the state-of-the-art approaches depends on several factors, such as the quality of the images and the interpretation of the results by medical experts. This systematic review aims to critically assess the efficacy and challenges of this research field in order to explain the usability and limitations and highlight potential future lines of work for the scientific and clinical community. In this study, the analysis was carried out over 45 contemporary studies extracted from databases such as Web of Science and Scopus. Several computer vision techniques related to image and video processing for early skin cancer diagnosis were identified. In this context, the focus behind the process included the algorithms employed, result accuracy, and validation metrics. Thus, the results yielded significant advancements in cancer detection using deep learning and machine learning algorithms. Lastly, this review establishes a foundation for future research, highlighting potential contributions and opportunities to improve the effectiveness of skin cancer detection through machine learning.

Automatically Diagnosing Skin Cancers From Multimodality Images Using Two-Stage Genetic Programming

Developing a computer-aided diagnostic system for detecting various skin malignancies from images has attracted many researchers. Unlike many machine-learning approaches, such as artificial neural networks, genetic programming (GP) automatically evolves models with flexible representation. GP successfully provides effective solutions using its intrinsic ability to select prominent features (i.e., feature selection) and build new features (i.e., feature construction). Existing approaches have utilized GP to construct new features from the complete set of original features and the set of operators. However, the complete set of features may contain redundant or irrelevant features that do not provide useful information for classification. This study aims to develop a two-stage GP method, where the first stage selects prominent features, and the second stage constructs new features from these selected features and operators, such as multiplication in a wrapper approach to improve the classification performance. To include local, global, texture, color, and multiscale image properties of skin images, GP selects and constructs features extracted from local binary patterns and pyramid-structured wavelet decomposition. The accuracy of this GP method is assessed using two real-world skin image datasets captured from the standard camera and specialized instruments, and compared with commonly used classification algorithms, three state of the art, and an existing embedded GP method. The results reveal that this new approach of feature selection and feature construction effectively helps improve the performance of the machine-learning classification algorithms. Unlike other black-box models, the evolved models by GP are interpretable; therefore, the proposed method can assist dermatologists to identify prominent features, which has been shown by further analysis on the evolved models.

Toward Multicenter Skin Lesion Classification Using Deep Neural Network With Adaptively Weighted Balance Loss

Recently, deep neural network-based methods have shown promising advantages in accurately recognizing skin lesions from dermoscopic images. However, most existing works focus more on improving the network framework for better feature representation but ignore the data imbalance issue, limiting their flexibility and accuracy across multiple scenarios in multi-center clinics. Generally, different clinical centers have different data distributions, which presents challenging requirements for the network's flexibility and accuracy. In this paper, we divert the attention from framework improvement to the data imbalance issue and propose a new solution for multi-center skin lesion classification by introducing a novel adaptively weighted balance (AWB) loss to the conventional classification network. Benefiting from AWB, the proposed solution has the following advantages: 1) it is easy to satisfy different practical requirements by only changing the backbone; 2) it is user-friendly with no tuning on hyperparameters; and 3) it adaptively enables small intraclass compactness and pays more attention to the minority class. Extensive experiments demonstrate that, compared with solutions equipped with state-of-the-art loss functions, the proposed solution is more flexible and more competent for tackling the multi-center imbalanced skin lesion classification task with considerable performance on two benchmark datasets. In addition, the proposed solution is proved to be effective in handling the imbalanced gastrointestinal disease classification task and the imbalanced DR grading task. Classification of Breast Cancer Histopathological Images Using DenseNet and Transfer Learning

Breast cancer is one of the most common invading cancers in women. Analyzing breast cancer is nontrivial and may lead to disagreements among experts. Although deep learning methods achieved an excellent performance in classification tasks including breast cancer histopathological images, the existing state-of-the-art methods are computationally expensive and may overfit due to extracting features from in-distribution images. In this paper, our contribution is mainly twofold. First, we perform a short survey on deep-learning-based models for classifying histopathological images to investigate the most popular and optimized training-testing ratios. Our findings reveal that the most popular training-testing ratio for histopathological image classification is 70%: 30%, whereas the best performance (e.g., accuracy) is achieved by using the training-testing ratio of 80%: 20% on an identical dataset. Second, we propose a method named DenTnet to classify breast cancer histopathological images chiefly. DenTnet utilizes the principle of transfer learning to solve the problem of extracting features from the same distribution using DenseNet as a backbone model. The proposed DenTnet method is shown to be superior in comparison to a number of leading deep learning methods in terms of detection accuracy (up to 99.28% on BreaKHis dataset deeming training-testing ratio of 80%: 20%) with good generalization ability and computational speed. The limitation of existing methods including the requirement of high computation and utilization of the same feature distribution is mitigated by dint of the DenTnet.

New Trends in Melanoma Detection Using Neural Networks: A Systematic Review

Due to its increasing incidence, skin cancer, and especially melanoma, is a serious health disease today. The high mortality rate associated with melanoma makes it necessary to detect the early stages to be treated urgently and properly. This is the reason why many researchers in this domain wanted to obtain accurate computer-aided diagnosis systems to assist in the early detection and diagnosis of such diseases. The paper presents a systematic review of recent advances in an area of increased interest for cancer prediction, with a focus on a comparative perspective of melanoma detection using artificial intelligence, especially neural network-based systems. Such structures can be considered intelligent support systems for dermatologists. Theoretical and applied contributions were investigated in the new development trends of multiple neural network architecture, based on decision fusion. The most representative articles covering the area of melanoma detection based on neural networks, published in journals and impact conferences, were investigated between 2015 and 2021, focusing on the interval 2018-2021 as new trends. Additionally presented are the main databases and trends in their use in teaching neural networks to detect melanomas. Finally, a research agenda was highlighted to advance the field towards the new trends.
