Separable Markov random field model and its applications in low level vision

This brief proposes a continuously-valued Markov random field (MRF) model with separable filter bank, denoted as MRFSepa, which significantly reduces the computational complexity in the MRF modeling. In this framework, we design a novel gradient-based discriminative learning method to learn the potential functions and separable filter banks. We learn MRFSepa models with 2-D and 3-D separable filter banks for the applications of gray-scale/color image denoising and color image demosaicing. By implementing MRFSepa model on graphics processing unit, we achieve real-time image denoising and fast image demosaicing with high-quality results.

Design of interchannel MRF model for probabilistic multichannel image processing

In this paper, we present a novel framework that exploits an informative reference channel in the processing of another channel. We formulate the problem as a maximum a posteriori estimation problem considering a reference channel and develop a probabilistic model encoding the interchannel correlations based on Markov random fields. Interestingly, the proposed formulation results in an image-specific and region-specific linear filter for each site. The strength of filter response can also be controlled in order to transfer the structural information of a channel to the others. Experimental results on satellite image fusion and chrominance image interpolation with denoising show that our method provides improved subjective and objective performance compared with conventional approaches.

PCA-based spatially adaptive denoising of CFA images for single-sensor digital cameras

Single-sensor digital color cameras use a process called color demosiacking to produce full color images from the data captured by a color filter array (CAF). The quality of demosiacked images is degraded due to the sensor noise introduced during the image acquisition process. The conventional solution to combating CFA sensor noise is demosiacking first, followed by a separate denoising processing. This strategy will generate many noise-caused color artifacts in the demosiacking process, which are hard to remove in the denoising process. Few denoising schemes that work directly on the CFA images have been presented because of the difficulties arisen from the red, green and blue interlaced mosaic pattern, yet a well-designed "denoising first and demosiacking later" scheme can have advantages such as less noise-caused color artifacts and cost-effective implementation. This paper presents a principle component analysis (PCA)-based spatially-adaptive denoising algorithm, which works directly on the CFA data using a supporting window to analyze the local image statistics. By exploiting the spatial and spectral correlations existing in the CFA image, the proposed method can effectively suppress noise while preserving color edges and details. Experiments using both simulated and real CFA images indicate that the proposed scheme outperforms many existing approaches, including those sophisticated demosiacking and denoising schemes, in terms of both objective measurement and visual evaluation.

Demosaicing of color filter array captured images using gradient edge detection masks and adaptive heterogeneity-projection

Without demosaicing processing, this paper first proposes a new approach to extract more accurate gradient/edge information on mosaic images directly. Next, based on spectral-spatial correlation, a novel adaptive heterogeneity-projection with proper mask size for each pixel is presented. Combining the extracted gradient/edge information and the adaptive heterogeneity-projection values, a new edge-sensing demosaicing algorithm is presented. Based on 24 popular testing images, experimental results demonstrated that our proposed high-quality demosaicing algorithm has the best image quality performance when compared with several recently published algorithms.

Spatio-spectral color filter array design for optimal image recovery

In digital imaging applications, data are typically obtained via a spatial subsampling procedure implemented as a color filter array-a physical construction whereby only a single color value is measured at each pixel location. Owing to the growing ubiquity of color imaging and display devices, much recent work has focused on the implications of such arrays for subsequent digital processing, including in particular the canonical demosaicking task of reconstructing a full color image from spatially subsampled and incomplete color data acquired under a particular choice of array pattern. In contrast to the majority of the demosaicking literature, we consider here the problem of color filter array design and its implications for spatial reconstruction quality. We pose this problem formally as one of simultaneously maximizing the spectral radii of luminance and chrominance channels subject to perfect reconstruction, and-after proving sub-optimality of a wide class of existing array patterns-provide a constructive method for its solution that yields robust, new panchromatic designs implementable as subtractive colors. Empirical evaluations on multiple color image test sets support our theoretical results, and indicate the potential of these patterns to increase spatial resolution for fixed sensor size, and to contribute to improved reconstruction fidelity as well as significantly reduced hardware complexity.

Sparse representation for color image restoration

Sparse representations of signals have drawn considerable interest in recent years. The assumption that natural signals, such as images, admit a sparse decomposition over a redundant dictionary leads to efficient algorithms for handling such sources of data. In particular, the design of well adapted dictionaries for images has been a major challenge. The K-SVD has been recently proposed for this task and shown to perform very well for various grayscale image processing tasks. In this paper, we address the problem of learning dictionaries for color images and extend the K-SVD-based grayscale image denoising algorithm that appears in. This work puts forward ways for handling nonhomogeneous noise and missing information, paving the way to state-of-the-art results in applications such as color image denoising, demosaicing, and inpainting, as demonstrated in this paper.

Color reproduction from noisy CFA data of single sensor digital cameras

Single sensor digital color still/video cameras capture images using a color filter array (CFA) and require color interpolation (demosaicking) to reconstruct full color images. The color reproduction has to combat sensor noises which are channel dependent. If untreated in demosaicking, sensor noises can cause color artifacts that are hard to remove later by a separate denoising process, because the demosaicking process complicates the noise characteristics by blending noises of different color channels. This paper presents a joint demosaicking-denoising approach to overcome this difficulty. The color image is restored from noisy mosaic data in two steps. First, the difference signals of color channels are estimated by linear minimum mean square-error estimation. This process exploits both spectral and spatial correlations to simultaneously suppress sensor noise and interpolation error. With the estimated difference signals, the full resolution green channel is recovered. The second step involves in a wavelet-based denoising process to remove the CFA channel-dependent noises from the reconstructed green channel. The red and blue channels are subsequently recovered. Simulated and real CFA mosaic data are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed joint demosaicking-denoising scheme and compare it with many recently developed sophisticated demosaicking and denoising schemes.

Demosaicing with directional filtering and a posteriori decision

Most digital cameras use a color filter array to capture the colors of the scene. Downsampled versions of the red, green, and blue components are acquired, and an interpolation of the three colors is necessary to reconstruct a full representation of the image. This color interpolation is known as demosaicing. The most effective demosaicing techniques proposed in the literature are based on directional filtering and a posteriori decision. In this paper, we present a novel approach to this reconstruction method. A refining step is included to further improve the resulting reconstructed image. The proposed approach requires a limited computational cost and gives good performance even when compared to more demanding techniques.

Heterogeneity-projection hard-decision color interpolation using spectral-spatial correlation

This paper presents a novel heterogeneity-projection hard-decision (HPHD) color interpolation procedure for reproduction of Bayer mosaic images. The proposed algorithm aims to estimate the optimal interpolation direction and perform hard-decision interpolation, in which each pixel only needs to be interpolated once. A new heterogeneity-projection scheme based on a novel spectral-spatial correlation concept is proposed to estimate the best interpolation direction directly from the original mosaic image. Using the proposed heterogeneity-projection scheme, a hard-decision rule can be decided before performing the interpolation. The advantage of this scheme is that it provides an efficient way for decision-based algorithms to generate improved results using fewer computations. Compared with three recently reported demosaicing techniques, Gunturk's, Lu's, and Li's methods, the proposed HPHD outperforms all of them in both PSNR values and S-CIELAB deltaEab measures by utilizing 25 natural images from Kodak PhotoCD.

Color demosaicing using variance of color differences

This paper presents an adaptive demosaicing algorithm. Missing green samples are first estimated based on the variances of the color differences along different edge directions. The missing red and blue components are then estimated based on the interpolated green plane. This algorithm can effectively preserve the details in texture regions and, at the same time, it can significantly reduce the color artifacts. As compared with the latest demosaicing algorithms, the proposed algorithm produces the best average demosaicing performance both objectively and subjectively.

Edge-preserving image denoising via optimal color space projection

Denoising of color images can be done on each color component independently. Recent work has shown that exploiting strong correlation between high-frequency content of different color components can improve the denoising performance. We show that for typical color images high correlation also means similarity, and propose to exploit this strong intercolor dependency using an optimal luminance/color-difference space projection. Experimental results confirm that performing denoising on the projected color components yields superior denoising performance, both in peak signal-to-noise ratio and visual quality sense, compared to that of existing solutions. We also develop a novel approach to estimate directly from the noisy image data the image and noise statistics, which are required to determine the optimal projection.

Joint demosaicing and denoising

The output image of a digital camera is subject to a severe degradation due to noise in the image sensor. This paper proposes a novel technique to combine demosaicing and denoising procedures systematically into a single operation by exploiting their obvious similarities. We first design a filter as if we are optimally estimating a pixel value from a noisy single-color (sensor) image. With additional constraints, we show that the same filter coefficients are appropriate for color filter array interpolation (demosaicing) given noisy sensor data. The proposed technique can combine many existing denoising algorithms with the demosaicing operation. In this paper, a total least squares denoising method is used to demonstrate the concept. The algorithm is tested on color images with pseudorandom noise and on raw sensor data from a real CMOS digital camera that we calibrated. The experimental results confirm that the proposed method suppresses noise (CMOS/CCD image sensor noise model) while effectively interpolating the missing pixel components, demonstrating a significant improvement in image quality when compared to treating demosaicing and denoising problems independently.

Multiframe demosaicing and super-resolution of color images

In the last two decades, two related categories of problems have been studied independently in image restoration literature: super-resolution and demosaicing. A closer look at these problems reveals the relation between them, and, as conventional color digital cameras suffer from both low-spatial resolution and color-filtering, it is reasonable to address them in a unified context. In this paper, we propose a fast and robust hybrid method of super-resolution and demosaicing, based on a maximum a posteron estimation technique by minimizing a multiterm cost function. The L1 norm is used for measuring the difference between the projected estimate of the high-resolution image and each low-resolution image, removing outliers in the data and errors due to possibly inaccurate motion estimation. Bilateral regularization is used for spatially regularizing the luminance component, resulting in sharp edges and forcing interpolation along the edges and not across them. Simultaneously, Tikhonov regularization is used to smooth the chrominance components. Finally, an additional regularization term is used to force similar edge location and orientation in different color channels. We show that the minimization of the total cost function is relatively easy and fast. Experimental results on synthetic and real data sets confirm the effectiveness of our method.

Linear demosaicing inspired by the human visual system

There is an analogy between single-chip color cameras and the human visual system in that these two systems acquire only one limited wavelength sensitivity band per spatial location. We have exploited this analogy, defining a model that characterizes a one-color per spatial position image as a coding into luminance and chrominance of the corresponding three colors per spatial position image. Luminance is defined with full spatial resolution while chrominance contains subsampled opponent colors. Moreover, luminance and chrominance follow a particular arrangement in the Fourier domain, allowing for demosaicing by spatial frequency filtering. This model shows that visual artifacts after demosaicing are due to aliasing between luminance and chrominance and could be solved using a preprocessing filter. This approach also gives new insights for the representation of single-color per spatial location images and enables formal and controllable procedures to design demosaicing algorithms that perform well compared to concurrent approaches, as demonstrated by experiments.

Adaptive homogeneity-directed demosaicing algorithm

A cost-effective digital camera uses a single-image sensor, applying alternating patterns of red, green, and blue color filters to each pixel location. A way to reconstruct a full three-color representation of color images by estimating the missing pixel components in each color plane is called a demosaicing algorithm. This paper presents three inherent problems often associated with demosaicing algorithms that incorporate two-dimensional (2-D) directional interpolation: misguidance color artifacts, interpolation color artifacts, and aliasing. The level of misguidance color artifacts present in two images can be compared using metric neighborhood modeling. The proposed demosaicing algorithm estimates missing pixels by interpolating in the direction with fewer color artifacts. The aliasing problem is addressed by applying filterbank techniques to 2-D directional interpolation. The interpolation artifacts are reduced using a nonlinear iterative procedure. Experimental results using digital images confirm the effectiveness of this approach.
