ME R-CNN: Multi-Expert R-CNN for Object Detection

We introduce Multi-Expert Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (ME R-CNN) which is equipped with multiple experts (ME) where each expert is learned to process a certain type of regions of interest (RoIs). This architecture better captures the appearance variations of the RoIs caused by different shapes, poses, and viewing angles. In order to direct each RoI to the appropriate expert, we devise a novel "learnable" network, which we call, expert assignment network (EAN). EAN automatically learns the optimal RoI-expert relationship even without any supervision of expert assignment. As the major components of ME R-CNN, ME and EAN, are mutually affecting each other while tied to a shared network, neither an alternating nor a naive end-to-end optimization is likely to fail. To address this problem, we introduce a practical training strategy which is tailored to optimize ME, EAN, and the shared network in an end-to-end fashion. We show that both of the architectures provide considerable performance increase over the baselines on PASCAL VOC 07, 12, and MS COCO datasets.

Viewpoint Assessment and Recommendation for Photographing Architectures

This paper studies the problem of how to assess the quality of photographing viewpoints and how to choose good viewpoints for taking photographs of architectures. We achieve this by learning from photographs of world famous landmarks that are available on the Internet and their viewpoint quality ranked by online user annotation. Unlike previous efforts devoted to photo quality assessment which mainly rely on 2D image features, we show in this paper combining 2D image features extracted from images with 3D geometric features computed on the 3D models can result in more reliable evaluation of viewpoint quality. Specifically, we collect a set of photographs for each of 15 world famous architectures as well as their 3D models from the Internet. Viewpoint recovery for images is carried out through an image-model registration process, after which a newly proposed viewpoint clustering strategy is exploited to validate users' viewpoint preferences when photographing landmarks. Finally, we extract a number of 2D and 3D features for each image based on multiple visual and geometric cues and perform viewpoint recommendation by learning from both 2D and 3D features using a specifically designed SVM-2K multi-view learner, achieving superior performance over using solely 2D or 3D features. We show the effectiveness of the proposed approach through extensive experiments. The experiments also demonstrate that our system can be used to recommend viewpoints for rendering textured 3D models of buildings for the use of architectural design, in addition to viewpoint evaluation of photographs and recommendation of viewpoints for photographing architectures in practice.

Automatic Muscle Fiber Orientation Tracking in Ultrasound Images Using a New Adaptive Fading Bayesian Kalman Smoother

This paper proposes a new algorithm for automatic estimation of muscle fiber orientation (MFO) in musculoskeletal ultrasound images, which is commonly used for both diagnosis and rehabilitation assessment of patients. The algorithm is based on a novel adaptive fading Bayesian Kalman filter (AF-BKF) and an automatic region of interest (ROI) extraction method. The ROI is first enhanced by the Gabor filter (GF) and extracted automatically using the revoting constrained Radon transform (RCRT) approach. The dominant MFO in the ROI is then detected by the RT and tracked by the proposed AF-BKF, which employs simplified Gaussian mixtures to approximate the non-Gaussian state densities and a new adaptive fading method to update the mixture parameters. An AF-BK smoother (AF-BKS) is also proposed by extending the AF-BKF using the concept of Rauch-Tung-Striebel smoother for further smoothing the fascicle orientations. The experimental results and comparisons show that: 1) the maximum segmentation error of the proposed RCRT is below nine pixels, which is sufficiently small for MFO tracking; 2) the accuracy of MFO gauged by RT in the ROI enhanced by the GF is comparable to that of using multiscale vessel enhancement filter-based method and better than those of local RT and revoting Hough transform approaches; and 3) the proposed AF-BKS algorithm outperforms the other tested approaches and achieves a performance close to those obtained by experienced operators (the overall covariance obtained by the AF-BKS is 3.19, which is rather close to that of the operators, 2.86). It, thus, serves as a valuable tool for automatic estimation of fascicle orientations and possibly for other applications in musculoskeletal ultrasound images.
