False Discovery Rate Approach to Unsupervised Image Change Detection

Removal of manually induced artifacts in ultrasound images of thyroid nodules based on edge-connection and Criminisi image restoration algorithm

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

There are various artificial markers in ultrasound images of thyroid nodules, which have impact on subsequent processing and computer-aided diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to develop an approach to automatically remove artifacts and restore ultrasound images of thyroid nodules.

METHODS

Fifty ultrasound images with manually induced artifacts were selected from publicly available and self-collected datasets. A combined approach was developed which consisted of two steps, artifacts detection and removal of the detected artifacts. Specifically, a novel edge-connection algorithm was used for artifact detection, detection accuracy and false discovery rate were used to evaluate the performance of artifact detection approaches. Criminisi algorithm was used for image restoration with peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and mean gradient difference to evaluate its performance. In addition, computation complexity was evaluated by execution time of relevant algorithms.

RESULTS

Results revealed that the proposed joint approach with edge-connection and Criminisi algorithm could achieve automatic artifacts removal. Mean detection accuracy and mean false discovery rate of the proposed edge-connection algorithm for the 50 ultrasound images were 0.86 and 1.50. Mean PSNR of the 50 restored images by Criminisi algorithm was 36.64 dB, and mean gradient difference of the restored images was -0.002 compared with the original images.

CONCLUSIONS

The proposed combined approach had a good detection accuracy for different types of manually induced artifacts, and could significantly improve PSNR of the ultrasound images. The proposed combined approach may have potential use for the repair of ultrasound images with artifacts.

Graph-Based Data Fusion Applied to: Change Detection and Biomass Estimation in Rice Crops

The complementary nature of different modalities and multiple bands used in remote sensing data is helpful for tasks such as change detection and the prediction of agricultural variables. Nonetheless, correctly processing a multi-modal dataset is not a simple task, owing to the presence of different data resolutions and formats. In the past few years, graph-based methods have proven to be a useful tool in capturing inherent data similarity, in spite of different data formats, and preserving relevant topological and geometric information. In this paper, we propose a graph-based data fusion algorithm for remotely sensed images applied to (i) data-driven semi-unsupervised change detection and (ii) biomass estimation in rice crops. In order to detect the change, we evaluated the performance of four competing algorithms on fourteen datasets. To estimate biomass in rice crops, we compared our proposal in terms of root mean squared error (RMSE) concerning a recent approach based on vegetation indices as features. The results confirm that the proposed graph-based data fusion algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art methods for change detection and biomass estimation in rice crops.

A New Image Registration Algorithm Based on Evidential Reasoning

Image registration is a crucial and fundamental problem in image processing and computer vision, which aims to align two or more images of the same scene acquired from different views or at different times. In image registration, since different keypoints (e.g., corners) or similarity measures might lead to different registration results, the selection of keypoint detection algorithms or similarity measures would bring uncertainty. These different keypoint detectors or similarity measures have their own pros and cons and can be jointly used to expect a better registration result. In this paper, the uncertainty caused by the selection of keypoint detector or similarity measure is addressed using the theory of belief functions, and image information at different levels are jointly used to achieve a more accurate image registration. Experimental results and related analyses show that our proposed algorithm can achieve more precise image registration results compared to several prevailing algorithms.
