Uncertainty-Aware Active Domain Adaptive Salient Object Detection

Due to the advancement of deep learning, the performance of salient object detection (SOD) has been significantly improved. However, deep learning-based techniques require a sizable amount of pixel-wise annotations. To relieve the burden of data annotation, a variety of deep weakly-supervised and unsupervised SOD methods have been proposed, yet the performance gap between them and fully supervised methods remains significant. In this paper, we propose a novel, cost-efficient salient object detection framework, which can adapt models from synthetic data to real-world data with the help of a limited number of actively selected annotations. Specifically, we first construct a synthetic SOD dataset by copying and pasting foreground objects into pure background images. With the masks of foreground objects taken as the ground-truth saliency maps, this dataset can be used for training the SOD model initially. However, due to the large domain gap between synthetic images and real-world images, the performance of the initially trained model on the real-world images is deficient. To transfer the model from the synthetic dataset to the real-world datasets, we further design an uncertainty-aware active domain adaptive algorithm to generate labels for the real-world target images. The prediction variances against data augmentations are utilized to calculate the superpixel-level uncertainty values. For those superpixels with relatively low uncertainty, we directly generate pseudo labels according to the network predictions. Meanwhile, we select a few superpixels with high uncertainty scores and assign labels to them manually. This labeling strategy is capable of generating high-quality labels without incurring too much annotation cost. Experimental results on six benchmark SOD datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms the existing state-of-the-art weakly-supervised and unsupervised SOD methods and is even comparable to the fully supervised ones. RSSFormer: Foreground Saliency Enhancement for Remote Sensing Land-Cover Segmentation

High spatial resolution (HSR) remote sensing images contain complex foreground-background relationships, which makes the remote sensing land cover segmentation a special semantic segmentation task. The main challenges come from the large-scale variation, complex background samples and imbalanced foreground-background distribution. These issues make recent context modeling methods sub-optimal due to the lack of foreground saliency modeling. To handle these problems, we propose a Remote Sensing Segmentation framework (RSSFormer), including Adaptive TransFormer Fusion Module, Detail-aware Attention Layer and Foreground Saliency Guided Loss. Specifically, from the perspective of relation-based foreground saliency modeling, our Adaptive Transformer Fusion Module can adaptively suppress background noise and enhance object saliency when fusing multi-scale features. Then our Detail-aware Attention Layer extracts the detail and foreground-related information via the interplay of spatial attention and channel attention, which further enhances the foreground saliency. From the perspective of optimization-based foreground saliency modeling, our Foreground Saliency Guided Loss can guide the network to focus on hard samples with low foreground saliency responses to achieve balanced optimization. Experimental results on LoveDA datasets, Vaihingen datasets, Potsdam datasets and iSAID datasets validate that our method outperforms existing general semantic segmentation methods and remote sensing segmentation methods, and achieves a good compromise between computational overhead and accuracy. COVID-19 diagnosis via chest X-ray image classification based on multiscale class residual attention

Aiming at detecting COVID-19 effectively, a multiscale class residual attention (MCRA) network is proposed via chest X-ray (CXR) image classification. First, to overcome the data shortage and improve the robustness of our network, a pixel-level image mixing of local regions was introduced to achieve data augmentation and reduce noise. Secondly, multi-scale fusion strategy was adopted to extract global contextual information at different scales and enhance semantic representation. Last but not least, class residual attention was employed to generate spatial attention for each class, which can avoid inter-class interference and enhance related features to further improve the COVID-19 detection. Experimental results show that our network achieves superior diagnostic performance on COVIDx dataset, and its accuracy, PPV, sensitivity, specificity and F1-score are 97.71%, 96.76%, 96.56%, 98.96% and 96.64%, respectively; moreover, the heat maps can endow our deep model with somewhat interpretability.
