An Improved Image Compression Model Enabled by Adaptive Active Contour and Supervised Learning-Based ROI Classification

This paper plans to develop a novel image compression model with four major phases. (i) Segmentation (ii) Feature Extraction (iii) ROI classification (iv) Compression. The image is segmented into two regions by Adaptive ACM. The result of ACM is the production of two regions, this model enables separate ROI classification phase. For performing this, the features corresponding to GLCM are extracted from the segmented parts. Further, they are subjected to classification via NN, in which new training algorithm is adopted. As a main novelty JA and WOA are merged together to form J-WOA with the aim of tuning the ACM (weighting factor and maximum iteration), and training algorithm of NN, where the weights are optimized. This model is referred as J-WOA-NN. This classification model exactly classifies the ROI regions. During the compression process, the ROI regions are handled by JPEG-LS algorithm and the non-ROI region are handled by wavelet-based lossy compression algorithm. Finally, the decompression model is carried out by adopting the same reverse process.

Real-Time Lossless Compression Algorithm for Ultrasound Data Using BL Universal Code

Software-based ultrasound imaging systems provide high flexibility that allows easy and fast adoption of newly developed algorithms. However, the extremely high data rate required for data transfer from sensors (e.g., transducers) to the ultrasound imaging systems is a major bottleneck in the software-based architecture, especially in the context of real-time imaging. To overcome this limitation, in this paper, we present a Binary cLuster (BL) code, which yields an improved compression ratio compared to the exponential Golomb code. Owing to the real-time encoding/decoding features without overheads, the universal code is a good solution to reduce the data transfer rate for software-based ultrasound imaging. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated using in vitro and in vivo data sets. It was demonstrated that the BL-beta code has a good stable lossless compression performance of 20%~30% while requiring no auxiliary memory or storage.

A rapid compression technique for 4-D functional MRI images using data rearrangement and modified binary array techniques

Compression techniques are vital for efficient storage and fast transfer of medical image data. The existing compression techniques take significant amount of time for performing encoding and decoding and hence the purpose of compression is not fully satisfied. In this paper a rapid 4-D lossy compression method constructed using data rearrangement, wavelet-based contourlet transformation and a modified binary array technique has been proposed for functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) images. In the proposed method, the image slices of fMRI data are rearranged so that the redundant slices form a sequence. The image sequence is then divided into slices and transformed using wavelet-based contourlet transform (WBCT). In WBCT, the high frequency sub-band obtained from wavelet transform is further decomposed into multiple directional sub-bands by directional filter bank to obtain more directional information. The relationship between the coefficients has been changed in WBCT as it has more directions. The differences in parent–child relationships are handled by a repositioning algorithm. The repositioned coefficients are then subjected to quantization. The quantized coefficients are further compressed by modified binary array technique where the most frequently occurring value of a sequence is coded only once. The proposed method has been experimented with fMRI images the results indicated that the processing time of the proposed method is less compared to existing wavelet-based set partitioning in hierarchical trees and set partitioning embedded block coder (SPECK) compression schemes [1]. The proposed method could also yield a better compression performance compared to wavelet-based SPECK coder. The objective results showed that the proposed method could gain good compression ratio in maintaining a peak signal noise ratio value of above 70 for all the experimented sequences. The SSIM value is equal to 1 and the value of CC is greater than 0.9 for all experiments. Subjective evaluation on the reconstructed images indicated that the proposed method could reproduce the diagnostic features of fMRI images clearly.

An efficient compression scheme for 4-D medical images using hierarchical vector quantization and motion compensation

This paper proposes an efficient compression scheme for compressing time-varying medical volumetric data. The scheme uses 3-D motion estimation to create a homogenous preprocessed data to be compressed by a 3-D image compression algorithm using hierarchical vector quantization. A new block distortion measure, called variance of residual (VOR), and three 3-D fast block matching algorithms are used to improve the motion estimation process in term of speed and data fidelity. The 3-D image compression process involves the application of two different encoding techniques based on the homogeneity of input data. Our method can achieve a higher fidelity and faster decompression time compared to other lossy compression methods producing similar compression ratios. The combination of 3-D motion estimation using VOR and hierarchical vector quantization contributes to the good performance.

3-D System-on-System (SoS) Biomedical-Imaging Architecture for Health-Care Applications

This paper presents the implementation of a 3-D architecture for a biomedical-imaging system based on a multilayered system-on-system structure. The architecture consists of a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor image sensor layer, memory, 3-D discrete wavelet transform (3D-DWT), 3-D Advanced Encryption Standard (3D-AES), and an RF transmitter as an add-on layer. Multilayer silicon (Si) stacking permits fabrication and optimization of individual layers by different processing technology to achieve optimal performance. Utilization of through silicon via scheme can address required low-power operation as well as high-speed performance. Potential benefits of 3-D vertical integration include an improved form factor as well as a reduction in the total wiring length, multifunctionality, power efficiency, and flexible heterogeneous integration. The proposed imaging architecture was simulated by using Cadence Spectre and Synopsys HSPICE while implementation was carried out by Cadence Virtuoso and Mentor Graphic Calibre.

Novel lossless FMRI image compression based on motion compensation and customized entropy coding

We recently proposed a method for lossless compression of 4-D medical images based on the advanced video coding standard (H.264/AVC). In this paper, we present two major contributions that enhance our previous work for compression of functional MRI (fMRI) data: 1) a new multiframe motion compensation process that employs 4-D search, variable-size block matching, and bidirectional prediction; and 2) a new context-based adaptive binary arithmetic coder designed for lossless compression of the residual and motion vector data. We validate our method on real fMRI sequences of various resolutions and compare the performance to two state-of-the-art methods: 4D-JPEG2000 and H.264/AVC. Quantitative results demonstrate that our proposed technique significantly outperforms current state of the art with an average compression ratio improvement of 13%.
