Detection of spectral signatures in multispectral MR images for classification

Feature-space-based FMRI analysis using the optimal linear transformation

The optimal linear transformation (OLT), an image analysis technique of feature space, was first presented in the field of MRI. This paper proposes a method of extending OLT from MRI to functional MRI (fMRI) to improve the activation-detection performance over conventional approaches of fMRI analysis. In this method, first, ideal hemodynamic response time series for different stimuli were generated by convolving the theoretical hemodynamic response model with the stimulus timing. Second, constructing hypothetical signature vectors for different activity patterns of interest by virtue of the ideal hemodynamic responses, OLT was used to extract features of fMRI data. The resultant feature space had particular geometric clustering properties. It was then classified into different groups, each pertaining to an activity pattern of interest; the applied signature vector for each group was obtained by averaging. Third, using the applied signature vectors, OLT was applied again to generate fMRI composite images with high SNRs for the desired activity patterns. Simulations and a blocked fMRI experiment were employed for the method to be verified and compared with the general linear model (GLM)-based analysis. The simulation studies and the experimental results indicated the superiority of the proposed method over the GLM-based analysis in detecting brain activities.

Automated classification of multi-spectral MR images using Linear Discriminant Analysis

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a valuable instrument in medical science owing to its capabilities in soft tissue characterization and 3D visualization. A potential application of MRI in clinical practice is brain parenchyma classification. This work proposes a novel approach called "Unsupervised Linear Discriminant Analysis (ULDA)" to classify and segment the three major tissues, i.e. gray matter (GM), white matter (WM) and cerebral spinal fluid (CSF), from a multi-spectral MR image of the human brain. The ULDA comprises two processes, namely Target Generation Process (TGP) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) classification. TGP is a fuzzy-set process that generates a set of potential targets from unknown information, and applies these targets to train the optimal division boundary by LDA, such that three tissues GM, WM and CSF are separated. Finally, two sets of images, namely computer-generated phantom images and real MR images are used in the experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of ULDA. Experiment results reveal that UDLA segments a multi-spectral MR image much more effectively than either FMRIB's Automated Segmentation Tool (FAST) or Fuzzy C-means (FC).

The simulation and the experiment results indicated the proposed method was capable of improving some conventional methods to be more sensitive to activations, having strong contrast between activations and inactivations, and being more valid for complex activity patterns.

Contrast enhancement and tissues classification of breast MRI using Kalman filter-based linear mixing method

Much attention is currently focused on one of the newest breast examination techniques, breast MRI. Contrast-enhanced breast MRIs acquired by contrast injection have been shown to be very sensitive in the detection of breast cancer, but are also time-consuming and cause waste of medical resources. This paper therefore proposes the use of spectral signature detection technology, the Kalman filter-based linear mixing method (KFLM), which can successfully present the results as high-contrast images and classify breast MRIs into major tissues from four bands of breast MRIs. A series of experiments using phantom and real MRIs was conducted and the results compared with those of the commonly used c-means (CM) method and dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) breast MRIs for performance evaluation. After comparison with the CM algorithm and DCE breast MRIs, the experimental results showed that the high-contrast images generated by the spectral signature detection technology, the KFLM, were of superior quality.

Kinematic patellar tracking from MR images for knee pain analysis

Kinematic approaches using MR images have been regarded of more accuracy in knee pain (AKP) detection than stationary approaches. However, the challenge in segmenting femur, patellar and tibia due to the intensity non-uniformity caused by magnetic propagation degradation in MR images, and the strong adhesion of the soft tissue around the knee organs, has restricted the use of kinematic approaches. This paper proposes a combinatorial based kinematic patellar tracking (CKPT) for AKP detection. The CKPT uses a hybrid approach for extracting knee organs, where an edge-constrained wavelet enhancement followed by moment preserving segmentation is employed for conquering the soft tissue adhesion for extracting the femur and tibia from axial MR images, and a sliding window based moment preserving for resolving the segmentation difficulty associated with intensity non-uniformity in sagittal MR images. The location constraints are then applied for extracting landmark points from femur and patellar, and three inclination angles reflecting patellar position and orientation, during leg movement, are calculated as the measurement of patellar dislocation. The experiment shows that the hybrid approach can accurately extract femur, patellar and tibia. It also demonstrates the prominent of the calculated inclination angles in detecting AKP.

3D ROC Analysis for Medical Imaging Diagnosis

Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) has been widely used as a performance evaluation tool to measure effectiveness of medical modalities. It is derived from a standard detection theory with false alarm and detection power interpreted as false positive (FP) and true positive (TP) respectively in terms of medical diagnosis. The ROC curve is plotted based on TP versus FP via hard decisions. This paper presents a three dimensional (3D) ROC analysis which extends the traditional two-dimensional (2D) ROC analysis by including a threshold parameter in a third dimension resulting from soft decisions, (SD). As a result, a 3D ROC curve can be plotted based on three parameters, TP, FP and SD. By virtue of such a 3D ROC curve three two-dimensional (2D) ROC curves can be derived, one of which is the traditional 2D ROC curve of TP versus FP with SD reduced to hard decision. In order to illustrate its utility in medical diagnosis, its application to magnetic resonance (MR) image classification is demonstrated.
