Spatial and directional contrast dependence in Lissajous-scanning projection systems

Scanning-based image formation fundamentally differs from its classical lens-based counterpart. Therefore, established classical performance evaluation methods fail to determine the theoretical limitations of scanning-based optical systems. We developed a simulation framework and a novel performance evaluation process to evaluate the achievable contrast in scanning systems. Applying these tools, we conducted a study determining the resolution limits of different Lissajous scanning approaches. For the first time, we identify and quantify spatial and directional dependencies of the optical contrast and demonstrate their significant impact on the perceived image quality. We prove that the observed effects are more pronounced for Lissajous systems with high ratios of the two scanning frequencies. The presented method and results can lay the foundation for a more sophisticated application-specific design of next-generation scanning systems.

Improved sampling scheme for LiDAR in Lissajous scanning mode

MEMS light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is becoming an indispensable sensor in vehicle environment sensing systems due to its low cost and high performance. The beam scanning trajectory, sampling scheme and gridding are the key technologies of MEMS LiDAR imaging. In Lissajous scanning mode, this paper improves the sampling scheme, through which a denser Cartesian grid of point cloud data at the same scanning frequency can be obtained. By summarizing the rules of the Cartesian grid, a general sampling scheme independent of the beam scanning trajectory patterns is proposed. Simulation and experiment results show that compared with the existing sampling scheme, the resolution and the number of points per frame are both increased by 2 times with the same hardware configuration and scanning frequencies for a MEMS scanning mirror (MEMS-SM). This is beneficial for improving the point cloud imaging performance of MEMS LiDAR.

Physics of MRI: a primer

This article is based on an introductory lecture given for the past many years during the "MR Physics and Techniques for Clinicians" course at the Annual Meeting of the ISMRM. This introduction is not intended to be a comprehensive overview of the field, as the subject of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) physics is large and complex. Rather, it is intended to lay a conceptual foundation by which magnetic resonance image formation can be understood from an intuitive perspective. The presentation is nonmathematical, relying on simple models that take the reader progressively from the basic spin physics of nuclei, through descriptions of how the magnetic resonance signal is generated and detected in an MRI scanner, the foundations of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation, and a discussion of the Fourier transform and its relation to MR image formation. The article continues with a discussion of how magnetic field gradients are used to facilitate spatial encoding and concludes with a development of basic pulse sequences and the factors defining image contrast.

Inner-volume imaging in vivo using three-dimensional parallel spatially selective excitation

This work describes the first experimental realization of three-dimensional spatially selective excitation using parallel transmission in vivo. For the design of three-dimensional parallel excitation pulses with short durations and high excitation accuracy, the choice of a suitable transmit k-space trajectory is crucial. For this reason, the characteristics of a stack-of-spirals trajectory and of a concentric-shells trajectory were examined in an initial simulation study. It showed that, especially when undersampling the trajectories in combination with parallel transmission, experimental parameters such as transmit-coil geometry and off-resonance conditions have an essential impact on the suitability of the selected trajectory and undersampling scheme. Both trajectories were applied in MR inner-volume imaging experiments which demonstrate that acceptably short and robust three-dimensional selective pulses can be achieved if the trajectory is temporally optimized and its actual path is measured and considered during pulse calculation. Pulse durations as short as 3.2 ms were realized and such pulses were appropriate to accurately excite arbitrarily shaped volumes in a corn cob and in a rat in vivo. Reduced field-of-view imaging of these selectively excited targets allowed high spatial resolution and significantly reduced measurement times and furthermore demonstrates the feasibility of three-dimensional parallel excitation in realistic MRI applications in vivo.

High-speed multiresolution scanning probe microscopy based on Lissajous scan trajectories

A novel scan trajectory for high-speed scanning probe microscopy is presented in which the probe follows a two-dimensional Lissajous pattern. The Lissajous pattern is generated by actuating the scanner with two single-tone harmonic waveforms of constant frequency and amplitude. Owing to the extremely narrow frequency spectrum, high imaging speeds can be achieved without exciting the unwanted resonant modes of the scanner and without increasing the sensitivity of the feedback loop to the measurement noise. The trajectory also enables rapid multiresolution imaging, providing a preview of the scanned area in a fraction of the overall scan time. We present a procedure for tuning the spatial and the temporal resolution of Lissajous trajectories and show experimental results obtained on a custom-built atomic force microscope (AFM). Real-time AFM imaging with a frame rate of 1 frame s⁻¹ is demonstrated.
