Advanced machine learning model for predicting Crohn's disease with enhanced ant colony optimization

Changes in human lifestyles have led to a dramatic increase in the incidence of Crohn's disease worldwide. Predicting the activity and remission of Crohn's disease has become an urgent research problem. In addition, the influence of each attribute in the test sample on the prediction results and the interpretability of the model still deserves further investigation. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed a wrapper feature selection classification model based on a combination of the improved ant colony optimization algorithm and the kernel extreme learning machine, called bIACOR-KELM-FS. IACOR introduces an evasive strategy and astrophysics strategy to balance the exploration and exploitation phases of the algorithm and enhance its optimization capabilities. The optimization capability of the proposed IACOR was validated on the IEEE CEC2017 benchmark test function. And the prediction was performed on Crohn's disease dataset. The results of the quantitative analysis showed that the prediction accuracy of bIACOR-KELM-FS for predicting the activity and remission of Crohn's disease reached 98.98%. The analysis of important attributes improved the interpretability of the model and provided a reference for the diagnosis of Crohn's disease. Therefore, the proposed model is considered a promising adjunctive diagnostic method for Crohn's disease.

DLMBHCO: design of an augmented bioinspired deep learning-based multidomain body parameter analysis via heterogeneous correlative body organ analysis

Progressive organ-level disorders in the human body are often correlated with diseases in other body parts. For instance, liver diseases can be linked with heart issues, while cancers can be linked with brain diseases (or psychological conditions). Defining such correlations is a complex task, and existing deep learning models that perform this task either showcase lower accuracy or are non-comprehensive when applied to real-time scenarios. To overcome these issues, this text proposes design of an augmented bioinspired deep learning-based multidomain body parameter analysis via heterogeneous correlative body organ analysis. The proposed model initially collects temporal and spatial data scans for different body parts and uses a multidomain feature extraction engine to convert these scans into vector sets. These vectors are processed by a Bacterial Foraging Optimizer (BFO), which assists in identification of highly variant feature sets, which are individually classified into different disease categories. A fusion of Inception Net, XCeption Net, and GoogLeNet Models is used to perform these classifications. The classified categories are linked with other disease types via temporal analysis of blood reports. The temporal analysis engine uses Modified Analytical Hierarchical Processing (MAHP) Model for calculating inter-organ disease dependency probabilities. Based on these probabilities, the model is able to generate a patient-level correlation map, which can be used by clinical experts to suggest remedial treatments, due to which the model was able to identify correlations between brain disorders and kidneys, heart diseases and lungs, heart diseases and liver, brain diseases and different types of cancers with high efficiency when evaluated under clinical scenarios. When validated on MITBIH, DEAP, CT Kidney, RIDER, and PLCO data samples, it was observed that the proposed model was capable of improving accuracy of correlation by 8.5%, while improving precision and recall by 3.2% when compared with existing correlation models under similar clinical scenarios.

Advances in Imaging of Inflammation, Fibrosis, and Cancer in the Gastrointestinal Tract

Gastrointestinal disease is prevalent and broad, manifesting itself in a variety of ways, including inflammation, fibrosis, infection, and cancer. However, historically, diagnostic technologies have exhibited limitations, especially with regard to diagnostic uncertainty. Despite development of newly emerging technologies such as optoacoustic imaging, many recent advancements have focused on improving upon pre-existing modalities such as ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and endoscopy. These advancements include utilization of machine learning models, biomarkers, new technological applications such as diffusion weighted imaging, and new techniques such as transrectal ultrasound. This review discusses assessment of disease processes using imaging strategies for the detection and monitoring of inflammation, fibrosis, and cancer in the context of gastrointestinal disease. Specifically, we include ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, diverticulitis, celiac disease, graft vs. host disease, intestinal fibrosis, colorectal stricture, gastric cancer, and colorectal cancer. We address some of the most recent and promising advancements for improvement of gastrointestinal imaging, including unique discussions of such advancements with regard to imaging of fibrosis and differentiation between similar disease processes.

Cross-Sectional Imaging Instead of Colonoscopy in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: Lights and Shadows

International guidelines recommend a treat-to-target strategy with a close monitoring of disease activity and therapeutic response in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Colonoscopy (CS) represents the current first-line procedure for evaluating disease activity in IBD. However, as it is expensive, invasive and poorly accepted by patients, CS is not appropriate for frequent and repetitive reassessments of disease activity. Recently, cross-sectional imaging techniques have been increasingly shown as reliable tools for assessing IBD activity. While computed tomography (CT) is hampered by radiation risks, routine implementation of magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) for close monitoring is limited by its costs, low availability and long examination time. Novel magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based techniques, such as diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), can overcome some of these weaknesses and have been shown as valuable options for IBD monitoring. Bowel ultrasound (BUS) is a noninvasive, highly available, cheap, and well accepted procedure that has been demonstrated to be as accurate as CS and MRE for assessing and monitoring disease activity in IBD. Furthermore, as BUS can be quickly performed at the point-of-care, it allows for real-time clinical decision making. This review summarizes the current evidence on the use of cross-sectional imaging techniques as cost-effective, noninvasive and reliable alternatives to CS for monitoring patients with IBD.

Deep-learning approach for automated thickness measurement of epithelial tissue and scab using optical coherence tomography

SIGNIFICANCE

In order to elucidate therapeutic treatment to accelerate wound healing, it is crucial to understand the process underlying skin wound healing, especially re-epithelialization. Epidermis and scab detection is of importance in the wound healing process as their thickness is a vital indicator to judge whether the re-epithelialization process is normal or not. Since optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a real-time and non-invasive imaging technique that can perform a cross-sectional evaluation of tissue microstructure, it is an ideal imaging modality to monitor the thickness change of epidermal and scab tissues during wound healing processes in micron-level resolution. Traditional segmentation on epidermal and scab regions was performed manually, which is time-consuming and impractical in real time.

AIM

We aim to develop a deep-learning-based skin layer segmentation method for automated quantitative assessment of the thickness of in vivo epidermis and scab tissues during a time course of healing within a rodent model.

APPROACH

Five convolution neural networks were trained using manually labeled epidermis and scab regions segmentation from 1000 OCT B-scan images (assisted by its corresponding angiographic information). The segmentation performance of five segmentation architectures was compared qualitatively and quantitatively for validation set.

RESULTS

Our results show higher accuracy and higher speed of the calculated thickness compared with human experts. The U-Net architecture represents a better performance than other deep neural network architectures with 0.894 at F1-score, 0.875 at mean intersection over union, 0.933 at Dice similarity coefficient, and 18.28  μm at an average symmetric surface distance. Furthermore, our algorithm is able to provide abundant quantitative parameters of the wound based on its corresponding thickness maps in different healing phases. Among them, normalized epidermal thickness is recommended as an essential hallmark to describe the re-epithelialization process of the rodent model.

CONCLUSIONS

The automatic segmentation and thickness measurements within different phases of wound healing data demonstrates that our pipeline provides a robust, quantitative, and accurate method for serving as a standard model for further research into effect of external pharmacological and physical factors.

A systematic review on application of deep learning in digestive system image processing

With the advent of the big data era, the application of artificial intelligence represented by deep learning in medicine has become a hot topic. In gastroenterology, deep learning has accomplished remarkable accomplishments in endoscopy, imageology, and pathology. Artificial intelligence has been applied to benign gastrointestinal tract lesions, early cancer, tumors, inflammatory bowel diseases, livers, pancreas, and other diseases. Computer-aided diagnosis significantly improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce physicians' workload and provide a shred of evidence for clinical diagnosis and treatment. In the near future, artificial intelligence will have high application value in the field of medicine. This paper mainly summarizes the latest research on artificial intelligence in diagnosing and treating digestive system diseases and discussing artificial intelligence's future in digestive system diseases. We sincerely hope that our work can become a stepping stone for gastroenterologists and computer experts in artificial intelligence research and facilitate the application and development of computer-aided image processing technology in gastroenterology.

Artificial intelligence in small intestinal diseases: Application and prospects

The small intestine is located in the middle of the gastrointestinal tract, so small intestinal diseases are more difficult to diagnose than other gastrointestinal diseases. However, with the extensive application of artificial intelligence in the field of small intestinal diseases, with its efficient learning capacities and computational power, artificial intelligence plays an important role in the auxiliary diagnosis and prognosis prediction based on the capsule endoscopy and other examination methods, which improves the accuracy of diagnosis and prediction and reduces the workload of doctors. In this review, a comprehensive retrieval was performed on articles published up to October 2020 from PubMed and other databases. Thereby the application status of artificial intelligence in small intestinal diseases was systematically introduced, and the challenges and prospects in this field were also analyzed.
