Simulation Analysis of Frog-Inspired Take-Off Performance Based on Different Structural Models

The frog-inspired jumping robot is an interesting topic in the field of biomechanics and bionics. However, due to the frog's explosive movement and large range of joint motion, it is very difficult to make their structure completely bionic. To obtain the optimal jumping motion model, the musculoskeletal structure, jumping movement mechanism, and characteristics of frogs are first systematically analyzed, and the corresponding structural and kinematic parameters are obtained. Based on biological characteristics, a model of the articular bone structure is created, which can fully describe the features of frog movement. According to the various factors affecting the frog's jumping movement, mass and constraints are added, and the complex biological joint structure is simplified into four different jumping structure models. The jumping ground reaction force, velocity, and displacement of the center of mass, joint torque, and other motion information of these four models are obtained through ADAMS simulation to reveal the jumping movement mechanism and the influencing factors of frogs. Finally, various motion features are analyzed and compared to determine the optimal structural model of the comprehensive index, which provides a theoretical basis for the design of the frog-inspired jumping robot.

Holistic Symmetry Assessment Using Pedobarography after Treatment of Pertrochanteric Fractures in Elderly Patients

Pertrochanteric fractures (PFs) are life threatening due to the prolonged immobilization of the elderly patient that affects, indirectly, the function of most organs. PFs may have an impact on the symmetry of the human body and contribute to poor global alignment. The aim of the study is to evaluate the functional, pedobarographic and radiological outcomes in a group of subjects with PFs treated with either a dynamic hip screw (DHS) or an intramedullary gamma nail fixation. A study group of 40 patients, admitted to hospital for pertrochanteric fractures between 2015 and 2019, at a mean age of 74.87 (range 65–99), were enrolled. A control group included 20 subjects free from significant disorders of the musculoskeletal system and any other disorders that might induce a compensatory abnormal gait pattern. Functional results were assessed by the Harris Hip Score, and the plantar pressure distribution and arch index were measured with a pedobarographic examination. Radiographic parameters were assessed based on the preoperative and postoperative standing AP pelvic radiographs and axial projection of the hip. The obtained results were evaluated at 9-month follow-up. The obtained results showed no significant difference between both study groups within the scope of the variables under study. To sum up, surgical treatment, either with DHS or intramedullary gamma nail fixation, and rehabilitation treatment support the symmetry of the musculoskeletal system. However, the full return of symmetry was not achieved at 9-month follow-up compared to the control group.

Research on the Correlation between Multisource Big Data Virtual Assisted Preschool Education and the Development of Children’s Innovative Ability

Objective. Innovation ability is an important part of children’s core literacy and the core goal of science curriculum. As one of the important contents of scientific literacy, innovation ability is the key ability of young children to make informed decisions when facing scientific problems in social and personal life. In order to adapt to the future life, it is very important for children to have the ability to innovate. This research will provide a reference for the cultivation of children’s innovative ability. Method. In the process of database design, certain design principles need to be followed. In this paper, the system and user experience are greatly optimized by reasonably constructing table structure, allocating storage space, and establishing indexes. In this system, the MySQL database is used to store system data, such as user registration information, subscription information, and system-provided services, and the data uploaded by users that needs to be processed is stored in Hive. Although the GFP algorithm can solve the problem of load balancing, when the largest conditional pattern base of a frequent item is projected to other nodes, a large amount of data transmission will occur, resulting in increased communication between nodes. In order to solve this problem, the FP-growth parallel algorithm based on traffic optimization gives priority to assigning each frequent item to the node that needs the least traffic when grouping it. Results/Discussion. Experiments show that the TFP algorithm not only satisfies the load balance of nodes but also ensures a small amount of communication between nodes, which is more efficient than the traditional FP-growth parallel algorithm. The survey results of the influencing factors of children’s innovation ability match the theoretical hypothesis, and different influencing factors have different effects on each dimension of children’s innovation ability. Through the basic fit index of the model, the evaluation of the external quality of the model and the test of the internal quality of the model, it is shown that the survey results of the influencing factors of children’s innovation ability match the theoretical hypothesis. The three influencing factors of family participation and investment, teacher teaching, and peer collaboration and communication have a positive role in promoting children’s innovation ability.

Simulation of the Landing Buffer of a Three-Legged Jumping Robot

In recent years, the research of planetary exploration robots has become an active field. The jumping robot has become a hot spot in this field. This paper presents a work modelling and simulating a three-legged jumping robot, which has a powerful force, high leaping performance, and good flexibility. In particular, the jumping of the robot was simulated and the landing buffer of the robot was analyzed. Because this jumping robot lacks landing buffer, this paper verifies a method of absorbing landing kinetic energy to improve landing stability and storing it as the energy for the next jump in the simulation. Through the landing simulation, the factors affecting the landing energy absorption are identified. Moreover, the simulation experiment verifies that the application of the intermediate axis theorem helps to absorb more energy and adjust the landing attitude of the robot. The simulation results in this paper can be applied to the optimal design of robot prototypes and provide a theoretical basis for subsequent research.

Robot-Fish Interaction Helps to Trigger Social Buffering in Neon Tetras: The Potential Role of Social Robotics in Treating Anxiety

The emerging field of social robotics comprises several multidisciplinary applications. Anxiety and stress therapies can greatly benefit by socio-emotional support provided by robots, although the intervention of social robots as effective treatment needs to be fully understood. Herein, Paracheirodon innesi, a social fish species, was used to interact with a robotic fish to understand intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms causing anxiety, and how social robots can be effectively used as anxiety treatments. In the first experiment we tested the effects of a conspecific-mimicking robot on the fish tendency to swim in the bottom when transferred in a new tank. Here, P. innesi spent a significantly longer time in the upper section of the test tank when the robotic fish was present, clearly indicating a reduction of their state of anxiety due to social stimuli. The second experiment was based on a modification of the dark/light preference test, since many teleost fish are scototactic, preferring dark environments. However, when the robotic fish was placed in the white half of the test tank, P. innesi individuals swam longer in this section otherwise aversive. Social support provided by the robotic fish in both experiments produced a better recovery from anxiety due to social buffering, a phenomenon regulated by specific neural mechanisms. This study provides new insights on the evolution and mechanisms of social buffering to reduce anxiety, as well as on the use of social robots as an alternative to traditional approaches in treating anxiety symptoms.

The creation of phenomena in interactive biorobotics

In so-called interactive biorobotics, robotic models of living systems interact with animals in controlled experimental settings. By observing how the focal animal reacts to the stimuli delivered by the robot, one tests hypotheses concerning the determinants of animal behaviour in social contexts. Building on previous methodological reconstructions of interactive biorobotics, this article reflects on the claim, made by several authors in the field, that this strategy may enable one to explain social phenomena in animals. The answer offered here will be negative: interactive biorobotics does not contribute to the explanation of social phenomena. However, it may greatly contribute to the study of animal behaviour by creating social phenomena in the sense discussed by Ian Hacking, i.e. by precisely defining new phenomena to be explained. It will be also suggested that interactive biorobotics can be combined with more classical robot-based approaches to the study of living systems, leading to a so-called simulation-interactive strategy for the mechanistic explanation of social behaviour in animals.

Unveiling social distancing mechanisms via a fish-robot hybrid interaction

Pathogen transmission is a major limit of social species. Social distancing, a behavioural-based response to diseases, has been regularly reported in nature. However, the identification of distinctive stimuli associated with an infectious disease represents a challenging task for host species, whose cognitive mechanisms are still poorly understood. Herein, the social fish Paracheirodon innesi, was selected as model organism to investigate animal abilities in exploiting visual information to identify and promote social distancing towards potentially infected conspecifics. To address this, a robotic fish replica mimicking a healthy P. innesi subject, and another mimicking P. innesi with morphological and/or locomotion anomalies were developed. P. innesi individuals were attracted by the healthy fish replica, while they avoided the fish replica with morphological abnormalities, as well as the fish replica with an intact appearance, but performing locomotion anomalies (both symptoms associated with a microsporidian parasite infesting P. innesi and other fish). Furthermore, the fish replica presenting both morphology and locomotion anomalies in conjunction, triggered a significantly stronger social distancing response. This confirms the hypothesis that group living animals overgeneralize cues that can be related with a disease to minimize transmission, and highlights the important role of visual cues in infection risk contexts. This study prompts more attention on the role of behavioural-based strategies to avoid pathogen/parasite diffusion, and can be used to optimize computational approaches to model disease dynamics.

Jumping Locomotion Strategies: From Animals to Bioinspired Robots

Jumping is a locomotion strategy widely evolved in both invertebrates and vertebrates. In addition to terrestrial animals, several aquatic animals are also able to jump in their specific environments. In this paper, the state of the art of jumping robots has been systematically analyzed, based on their biological model, including invertebrates (e.g., jumping spiders, locusts, fleas, crickets, cockroaches, froghoppers and leafhoppers), vertebrates (e.g., frogs, galagoes, kangaroos, humans, dogs), as well as aquatic animals (e.g., both invertebrates and vertebrates, such as crabs, water-striders, and dolphins). The strategies adopted by animals and robots to control the jump (e.g., take-off angle, take-off direction, take-off velocity and take-off stability), aerial righting, land buffering, and resetting are concluded and compared. Based on this, the developmental trends of bioinspired jumping robots are predicted.

Bio-robotic cues show how the Trinidadian guppy male recognises the morphological features of receptive females

Sensory fusion is used by the males of several animal species to discriminate the mating status of females by evaluating their phenotypic traits. The predominant trait used is olfactory cues, and the role of visual cues is not yet fully understood. The ability of Poecilia reticulata males to evaluate females' receptivity based on visual cues was investigated. Guppy males adopt two different mating strategies, courtship displays and forced copulation, towards receptive and pregnant females, respectively. Robotic counterparts mimicking receptive and pregnant females were developed to test whether males relied only on visual information to determine a females' mating status. Exposure to the robotic receptive females evoked courtship behaviours, while forced copulation attempts were more frequent towards the robotic pregnant females. When the robotic fish were simultaneously exposed, regardless of the presence or absence of receptive-female olfactory cues, males expressed their preference for the receptive female. Visual processing showed that fish social interactions played a strategic role in their collection of information, especially when other stimuli were not available. The proposed ethorobotic approach allowed for assessing the role of visual cues in the mating choice of P. reticulata males and highlighting the information processing methods and cognition in aquatic animals.

Beetle-robot hybrid interaction: sex, lateralization and mating experience modulate behavioural responses to robotic cues in the larger grain borer Prostephanus truncatus (Horn)

Ethorobotics, a new fascinating field of biorobotics, proposes the use of robotic replicas as an advanced method for investigating animal behaviour. This novel research approach can also encourage the development of advanced bioinspired robots. In the present study, we investigated the pushing behaviour, a particular display occurring in several beetle species, such as the larger grain borer, Prostephanus truncatus, during both male-female and male-male contexts. We developed a robotic apparatus actuating female and male-mimicking dummies to study if sex, mating experience and asymmetries of robotic cues can modulate the escalation of pushing behaviour. Results showed that the time needed by P. truncatus to react to female-smelling biomimetic dummies was chiefly affected by their mating experience and the dummy odour. This was likely due to reduce waste of costly sperm in mated males during the subsequent sexual interactions. The pushing behaviour was performed longer and with a higher number of acts when virgin females were approached from their right side. More and longer pushing acts were noted when virgin males were approached from their left side. Dedicated neural circuits would likely act in opposite direction in females and males producing population-level lateralized sensory-motor displays, which may be evolved to promote male approaches from the left side of females, thus improving short-distance sex recognition. Overall, this study provides new insights on the behavioural ecology of stored-product beetles, as well as on self-organization and decentralized decision making that can be exploited to develop bioinspired algorithms for task optimization, involving real-world scenarios.

Effect of temperature and ultraviolet light on the bacterial kill effectiveness of antibiotic-infused 3D printed implants

Drug eluting 3D printed polymeric implants have great potential in orthopaedic applications since they are relatively inexpensive and can be designed to be patient specific thereby providing quality care. Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) and Stereolithography (SLA) are among the most popular techniques available to print such polymeric implants. These techniques facilitate introducing antibiotics into the material at microscales during the manufacturing stage and subsequently, the printed implants can be engineered to release drugs in a controlled manner. However, FDM uses high temperature to melt the filament as it passes through the nozzle and SLA relies on exposure to nanoscale wavelength ultraviolet (UV) light which can adversely affect the anti-bacterial effectiveness of the antibiotics. The focus of this article is two-fold: i) Examine the effect of high temperature on the bacterial kill-effectiveness of eluted antibiotics through Polycaprolactone (PCL) based femoral implants and ii) Examine the effect of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light on the bacterial kill-effectiveness of eluted antibiotics through femoral implants made up of a composite resin with various weight fractions of Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) and Polyethylene Glycol Diacrylate (PEGDA). Results indicate that even after exposing doxycycline, vancomycin and cefazolin at different temperatures between 20oC and 230oC, the antibiotics did not lose their effectiveness (kill radius of at least 0.85 cm). For doxycycline infused implants exposed to UV light, it was seen that a resin with 20 % PEGDA and 80 % PEG had the highest efficacy (1.8 cm of kill radius) and the lowest efficacy was found in an implant with 100 % PEGDA (1.2 cm of kill radius).

The Logic of Interactive Biorobotics

In recent studies, robots are used to stimulate living systems in controlled experimental settings. This research strategy is here called interactive biorobotics, to distinguish it from classical biorobotics, in which robots are used to simulate, rather than to stimulate, living system behavior. This article offers a methodological analysis of interactive biorobotics and has two goals. The first one is to argue that interactive biorobotics is methodologically different, in some important respects, from classical biorobotics and from countless instances of model-based science. It will be shown that interactive biorobotics does not conform to the so-called “understanding by building” approach or synthetic method, and that it illustrates a novel use of models in science. The second goal is to reflect on the logic of interactive biorobotics. A distinction will be made between two classes of studies, which will be called “proximal” and “distal.” In proximal studies, experiments involving robot-animal interaction are brought to bear on theoretical hypotheses on robot-animal interaction. In distal studies, experiments involving robot-animal interaction are brought to bear on theoretical hypotheses on animal-animal interaction. Distal studies involve logical steps which may be particularly hard to justify. This distinction, together with a methodological reflection on the relationship between the context in which the experiments are carried out and the context in which the conclusions are expected to hold, will lead to a checklist of questions which may be useful to justify and evaluate the validity of interactive biorobotics studies. The reconstruction of the logic of interactive biorobotics made here, though preliminary, may contribute to justifying the important role that robots, as tool for stimulating living systems, can play in the contemporary life sciences.

Effect of Substrates' Compliance on the Jumping Mechanism of Locusta migratoria

Locusts generally live and move in complex environments including different kind of substrates, ranging from compliant leaves to stiff branches. Since the contact force generates deformation of the substrate, a certain amount of energy is dissipated each time when locust jumps from a compliant substrate. In published researches, it is proven that only tree frogs are capable of recovering part of the energy that had been accumulated in the substrate as deformation energy in the initial pushing phase, just before leaving the ground. The jumping performances of adult Locusta migratoria on substrates of three different compliances demonstrate that locusts are able to adapt their jumping mode to the mechanical characteristics of the substrate. Recorded high speed videos illustrate the existence of deformed substrate's recoil before the end of the takeoff phase when locusts jump from compliant substrates, which indicates their ability of recovering part of energy from the substrate deformation. This adaptability is supposed to be related to the catapult mechanism adopted in locusts' jump thanks to their long hind legs and sticky tarsus. These findings improve the understanding of the jumping mechanism of locusts, as well as can be used to develop artifact outperforming current jumping robots in unstructured scenarios.

Trajectory Planning for Spray Painting Robot Based on Point Cloud Slicing Technique

In this paper, aiming at the problem of poor quality and low spraying efficiency of irregular for complex freeform surfaces, a new spray painting robot trajectory planning method based on point cloud slicing technology is proposed. Firstly, the point cloud data of the workpiece to be sprayed is obtained by laser scanning. The point cloud data is processed to obtain the point cloud model of the sprayed workpiece. Then the section polysemy line is obtained after slice acquisition and section data processing of the point cloud model. The section polysemy line is sampled on average, and the normal vector of all sampling points is estimated. Finally, interpolation algorithm is used to connect the data points to obtain the space trajectory of spraying robot. In addition, the droplet trajectory model for electrostatic spray painting is established. The experimental results show that the method fully meets the requirements of coating thickness and improves the spraying efficiency and uniformity of coating.

Optimal Design of Adaptive Robust Control for the Delta Robot with Uncertainty: Fuzzy Set-Based Approach

An optimal control design for the uncertain Delta robot is proposed in the paper. The uncertain factors of the Delta robot include the unknown dynamic parameters, the residual vibration disturbances and the nonlinear joints friction, which are (possibly fast) time-varying and bounded. A fuzzy set theoretic approach is creatively used to describe the system uncertainty. With the fuzzily depicted uncertainty, an adaptive robust control, based on the fuzzy dynamic model, is established. It designs an adaptation mechanism, consisting of the leakage term and the dead-zone, to estimate the uncertainty information. An optimal design is constructed for the Delta robot and solved by minimizing a fuzzy set-based performance index. Unlike the traditional fuzzy control methods (if-then rules-based), the proposed control scheme is deterministic and fuzzily optimized. It is proven that the global solution in the closed form for this optimal design always exists and is unique. This research provides the Delta parallel robot a novel optimal control to guarantee the system performance regardless of the uncertainty. The effectiveness of the proposed control is illustrated by a series of simulation experiments. The results reveal that the further applications in other robots are feasible.

A Hip Active Assisted Exoskeleton That Assists the Semi-Squat Lifting

(1) Background: In the case of quick picking and heavy lifting, the carrying action results in a much more active myoelectric signal in the lower back than in an upright stationary one, and there is a high risk of back muscle injury without proper handling skills and equipment. (2) Methods: To reduce the risk of LBP during manual handing tasks, a hip active exoskeleton is designed to assist human manual lifting. A power control method is introduced into the control loop in the process of assisting human transportation. The power curve imitates the semi-squat movement of the human body as the output power of the hip joint. (3) Results: According to the test, the torque can be output according to the wearer’s movement. During the semi-squat lifting process, the EMG (electromyogram) signal of the vertical spine at L5/S1 was reduced by 30–48% and the metabolic cost of energy was reduced by 18% compared the situation of without EXO. (4) Conclusion: The exoskeleton joint output torque can change in an adaptive manner according to the angular velocity of the wearer’s joint. The exoskeleton can assist the waist muscles and the hip joint in the case of the reciprocating semi-squat lifting movement.
