Biointerfacing and Applications of Cell Membrane-Coated Nanoparticles

The cell membrane-coated nanoparticle is a biomimetic platform consisting of a nanoparticulate core coated with membrane derived from a cell, such as a red blood cell, platelet, or cancer cell. The cell membrane "disguise" allows the particles to be perceived by the body as the source cell by interacting with its surroundings using the translocated surface membrane components. The newly bestowed characteristics of the membrane-coated nanoparticle can be utilized for biological interfacing in the body, providing natural solutions to many biomedical issues. This Review will cover the interactions of these cell membrane-coated nanoparticles and their applications within three biomedical areas of interest, including (i) drug delivery, (ii) detoxification, and (iii) immune modulation.

In vitro interaction of colloidal nanoparticles with mammalian cells: What have we learned thus far?

The interfacing of colloidal nanoparticles with mammalian cells is now well into its second decade. In this review our goal is to highlight the more generally accepted concepts that we have gleaned from nearly twenty years of research. While details of these complex interactions strongly depend, amongst others, upon the specific properties of the nanoparticles used, the cell type, and their environmental conditions, a number of fundamental principles exist, which are outlined in this review.

Characterization and photocatalytic study of tantalum oxide nanoparticles prepared by the hydrolysis of tantalum oxo-ethoxide Ta8(μ3-O)2(μ-O)8(μ-OEt)6(OEt)14

Ta8(μ3-O)2(μ-O)8(μ-OEt)6(OEt)14 (1) was obtained by the controlled hydrolysis of tantalum ethoxide Ta(OEt)5 in the presence of ammonia. Compound 1 is considered as the intermediate building block in the sol-gel polymerization of Ta(OEt)5. Further hydrolysis of compound 1 yielded nanoparticles of Ta2O5, which were characterized by various techniques such as TGA-DTA-DSC, UV-vis DRS, XRD, SEM, TEM, particle size analyzer (DLS) and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. The band gap of the particles was calculated by using the Tauc plot. The photocatalytic activity of Ta2O5 nanoparticles was tested by the degradation of the organic dye rhodamine B.
