Unravelling Influence Factors in Pattern Recognition Myoelectric Control Systems: The Impact of Limb Positions and Electrode Shifts

Pattern recognition (PR)-based myoelectric control systems can naturally provide multifunctional and intuitive control of upper limb prostheses and restore lost limb function, but understanding their robustness remains an open scientific question. This study investigates how limb positions and electrode shifts-two factors that have been suggested to cause classification deterioration-affect classifiers' performance by quantifying changes in the class distribution using each factor as a class and computing the repeatability and modified separability indices. Ten intact-limb participants took part in the study. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) was used as the classifier. The results confirmed previous studies that limb positions and electrode shifts deteriorate classification performance (14-21% decrease) with no difference between factors (p > 0.05). When considering limb positions and electrode shifts as classes, we could classify them with an accuracy of 96.13 ± 1.44% and 65.40 ± 8.23% for single and all motions, respectively. Testing on five amputees corroborated the above findings. We have demonstrated that each factor introduces changes in the feature space that are statistically new class instances. Thus, the feature space contains two statistically classifiable clusters when the same motion is collected in two different limb positions or electrode shifts. Our results are a step forward in understanding PR schemes' challenges for myoelectric control of prostheses and further validation needs be conducted on more amputee-related datasets.

Robust myoelectric pattern recognition methods for reducing users' calibration burden: challenges and future

Myoelectric pattern recognition (MPR) has evolved into a sophisticated technology widely employed in controlling myoelectric interface (MI) devices like prosthetic and orthotic robots. Current MIs not only enable multi-degree-of-freedom control of prosthetic limbs but also demonstrate substantial potential in consumer electronics. However, the non-stationary random characteristics of myoelectric signals poses challenges, leading to performance degradation in practical scenarios such as electrode shifting and switching new users. Conventional MIs often necessitate meticulous calibration, imposing a significant burden on users. To address user frustration during the calibration process, researchers have focused on identifying MPR methods that alleviate this burden. This article categorizes common scenarios that incur calibration burdens as based on data distribution shift and based on dynamic data categories. Then further investigated and summarized the popular robust MPR algorithms used to reduce the user's calibration burden. We categorize these algorithms as based on data manipulate, feature manipulation and, model structure. And describes the scenarios to which each method is applicable and the conditions required for calibration. Finally, this review is concluded with the advantages of robust MPR and the remaining challenges and future opportunities.

Surface EMG Statistical and Performance Analysis of Targeted-Muscle-Reinnervated (TMR) Transhumeral Prosthesis Users in Home and Laboratory Settings

A pattern-recognition (PR)-based myoelectric control system is the trend of future prostheses development. Compared with conventional prosthetic control systems, PR-based control systems provide high dexterity, with many studies achieving >95% accuracy in the last two decades. However, most research studies have been conducted in the laboratory. There is limited research investigating how EMG signals are acquired when users operate PR-based systems in their home and community environments. This study compares the statistical properties of surface electromyography (sEMG) signals used to calibrate prostheses and quantifies the quality of calibration sEMG data through separability indices, repeatability indices, and correlation coefficients in home and laboratory settings. The results demonstrate no significant differences in classification performance between home and laboratory environments in within-calibration classification error (home: 6.33 ± 2.13%, laboratory: 7.57 ± 3.44%). However, between-calibration classification errors (home: 40.61 ± 9.19%, laboratory: 44.98 ± 12.15%) were statistically different. Furthermore, the difference in all statistical properties of sEMG signals is significant (p < 0.05). Separability indices reveal that motion classes are more diverse in the home setting. In summary, differences in sEMG signals generated between home and laboratory only affect between-calibration performance.

An Extended Spatial Transformer Convolutional Neural Network for Gesture Recognition and Self-Calibration Based on Sparse sEMG Electrodes

sEMG-based gesture recognition is widely applied in human-machine interaction system by its unique advantages. However, the accuracy of recognition drops significantly as electrodes shift. Besides, in applications such as VR, virtual hands should be shown in reasonable posture by self-calibration. We propose an armband fusing sEMG and IMU with autonomously adjustable gain, and an extended spatial transformer convolutional neural network (EST-CNN) with feature enhanced pretreatment (FEP) to accomplish both gesture recognition and self-calibration via a one-shot processing. Different from anthropogenic calibration methods, spatial transformer layers (STL) in EST-CNN automatically learn the transformation relation, and explicitly express the rotational angle for coarse correction. Due to the shape change of feature pattern as rotational shift, we design the fine tuning layer (FTL) which is able to regulate rotational angle within 45°. By combining STL, FTL and IMU-based posture, EST-CNN is able to calculate non-discretized angle, and achieves high resolution of posture estimation based on sparse sEMG electrodes. Experiments collect frequently-used 3 gestures of 4 subjects in equidistant angles to evaluate EST-CNN. The results under electrodes shift show that the accuracy of gesture recognition is 97.06%, which is 5.81% higher than CNN, the fitness between estimated and true rotational angle is 99.44%.

Force-Invariant Improved Feature Extraction Method for Upper-Limb Prostheses of Transradial Amputees

A force-invariant feature extraction method derives identical information for all force levels. However, the physiology of muscles makes it hard to extract this unique information. In this context, we propose an improved force-invariant feature extraction method based on nonlinear transformation of the power spectral moments, changes in amplitude, and the signal amplitude along with spatial correlation coefficients between channels. Nonlinear transformation balances the forces and increases the margin among the gestures. Additionally, the correlation coefficient between channels evaluates the amount of spatial correlation; however, it does not evaluate the strength of the electromyogram signal. To evaluate the robustness of the proposed method, we use the electromyogram dataset containing nine transradial amputees. In this study, the performance is evaluated using three classifiers with six existing feature extraction methods. The proposed feature extraction method yields a higher pattern recognition performance, and significant improvements in accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision, and F1 score are found. In addition, the proposed method requires comparatively less computational time and memory, which makes it more robust than other well-known feature extraction methods.
