Novel Methods for Personalized Gait Assistance: Three-Dimensional Trajectory Prediction Based on Regression and LSTM Models

Enhancing human-robot interaction has been a primary focus in robotic gait assistance, with a thorough understanding of human motion being crucial for personalizing gait assistance. Traditional gait trajectory references from Clinical Gait Analysis (CGA) face limitations due to their inability to account for individual variability. Recent advancements in gait pattern generators, integrating regression models and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) techniques, have aimed at providing more personalized and dynamically adaptable solutions. This article introduces a novel approach that expands regression and ANN applications beyond mere angular estimations to include three-dimensional spatial predictions. Unlike previous methods, our approach provides comprehensive spatial trajectories for hip, knee and ankle tailored to individual kinematics, significantly enhancing end-effector rehabilitation robotic devices. Our models achieve state-of-the-art accuracy: overall RMSE of 13.40 mm and a correlation coefficient of 0.92 for the regression model, and RMSE of 12.57 mm and a correlation of 0.99 for the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model. These advancements underscore the potential of these models to offer more personalized gait trajectory assistance, improving human-robot interactions.

AI-based methodologies for exoskeleton-assisted rehabilitation of the lower limb: a review

Over the past few years, there has been a noticeable surge in efforts to design novel tools and approaches that incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into rehabilitation of persons with lower-limb impairments, using robotic exoskeletons. The potential benefits include the ability to implement personalized rehabilitation therapies by leveraging AI for robot control and data analysis, facilitating personalized feedback and guidance. Despite this, there is a current lack of literature review specifically focusing on AI applications in lower-limb rehabilitative robotics. To address this gap, our work aims at performing a review of 37 peer-reviewed papers. This review categorizes selected papers based on robotic application scenarios or AI methodologies. Additionally, it uniquely contributes by providing a detailed summary of input features, AI model performance, enrolled populations, exoskeletal systems used in the validation process, and specific tasks for each paper. The innovative aspect lies in offering a clear understanding of the suitability of different algorithms for specific tasks, intending to guide future developments and support informed decision-making in the realm of lower-limb exoskeleton and AI applications.

Effect of Gait Speed on Trajectory Prediction Using Deep Learning Models for Exoskeleton Applications

Gait speed is an important biomechanical determinant of gait patterns, with joint kinematics being influenced by it. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of fully connected neural networks (FCNNs), with a potential application for exoskeleton control, in predicting gait trajectories at varying speeds (specifically, hip, knee, and ankle angles in the sagittal plane for both limbs). This study is based on a dataset from 22 healthy adults walking at 28 different speeds ranging from 0.5 to 1.85 m/s. Four FCNNs (a generalised-speed model, a low-speed model, a high-speed model, and a low-high-speed model) are evaluated to assess their predictive performance on gait speeds included in the training speed range and on speeds that have been excluded from it. The evaluation involves short-term (one-step-ahead) predictions and long-term (200-time-step) recursive predictions. The results show that the performance of the low- and high-speed models, measured using the mean absolute error (MAE), decreased by approximately 43.7% to 90.7% when tested on the excluded speeds. Meanwhile, when tested on the excluded medium speeds, the performance of the low-high-speed model improved by 2.8% for short-term predictions and 9.8% for long-term predictions. These findings suggest that FCNNs are capable of interpolating to speeds within the maximum and minimum training speed ranges, even if not explicitly trained on those speeds. However, their predictive performance decreases for gaits at speeds beyond or below the maximum and minimum training speed ranges.
