Discrimination Thresholds for Passive Tactile Volume Perception by Fingertips

Haptic object perception is still poorly understood up to now. This study investigated the ability of human fingers to discriminate the volume of objects by passive touch. Experiments measured the discrimination threshold of volume using three tasks: passive tactile volume perception, passive tactile area perception, and active tactile volume perception. In each trial, we utilized two plastic cubes to successively stimulate the fingers, and participants were instructed to make comparisons between the stimulus objects’ volume and area. Results showed that there was no significant difference in the discrimination thresholds of tactile volume perception between passive touch and active touch, whereas significant differences in the discrimination thresholds between fingertips, such as the thumb versus the pinky finger. In passive touch, the discrimination thresholds of volume perception were larger than that with surface area perception. We found that the discrimination of the volume of objects is more difficult than the discrimination of the area of the objects.

Discrimination threshold for haptic volume perception of fingers and phalanges

Humans exhibit a remarkable ability to discriminate variations in object volume based on natural haptic perception. The discrimination thresholds for the haptic volume perception of the whole hand are well known, but the discrimination thresholds for haptic volume perception of fingers and phalanges are still unknown. In the present study, two psychophysical experiments were performed to investigate haptic volume perception in various fingers and phalanges. The configurations of both experiments were completely dependent on haptic volume perception from the fingers and phalanges. The participants were asked to blindly discriminate the volume variation of regular solid objects in a random order by using the distal phalanx, medial phalanx, and proximal phalanx of their index finger, middle finger, ring finger, and little finger. The discrimination threshold of haptic volume perception gradually decreases from the little finger to the index finger as well as from the proximal phalanx to the distal phalanx. Overall, both the shape of the target and the part of the finger in contact with the target significantly influence the precision of haptic perception of volume. This substantial data set provides detailed and compelling perspectives on the haptic system, including for discrimination of the spatial size of objects and for performing more general perceptual processes.

On the edge: haptic discrimination of edge sharpness

The increasing ubiquity of haptic displays (e.g., smart phones and tablets) necessitates a better understanding of the perceptual capabilities of the human haptic system. Haptic displays will soon be capable of locally deforming to create simple 3D shapes. This study investigated the sensitivity of our haptic system to a fundamental component of shapes: edges. A novel set of eight high quality shape stimuli with test edges that varied in sharpness were fabricated in a 3D printer. In a two alternative, forced choice task, blindfolded participants were presented with two of these shapes side by side (one the reference, the other selected randomly from the remaining set of seven) and after actively exploring the test edge of each shape with the tip of their index finger, reported which shape had the sharper edge. We used a model selection approach to fit optimal psychometric functions to performance data, and from these obtained just noticeable differences and Weber fractions. In Experiment 1, participants performed the task with four different references. With sharpness defined as the angle at which one surface meets the horizontal plane, the four JNDs closely followed Weber's Law, giving a Weber fraction of 0.11. Comparisons to previously reported Weber fractions from other haptic manipulations (e.g. amplitude of vibration) suggests we are sufficiently sensitive to changes in edge sharpness for this to be of potential utility in the design of future haptic displays. In Experiment 2, two groups of participants performed the task with a single reference but different exploration strategies; one was limited to a single touch, the other unconstrained and free to explore as they wished. As predicted, the JND in the free exploration condition was lower than that in the single touch condition, indicating exploration strategy affects sensitivity to edge sharpness.

Integration and disruption effects of shape and texture in haptic search

In a search task, where one has to search for the presence of a target among distractors, the target is sometimes easily found, whereas in other searches it is much harder to find. The performance in a search task is influenced by the identity of the target, the identity of the distractors and the differences between the two. In this study, these factors were manipulated by varying the target and distractors in shape (cube or sphere) and roughness (rough or smooth) in a haptic search task. Participants had to grasp a bundle of items and determine as fast as possible whether a predefined target was present or not. It was found that roughness and edges were relatively salient features and the search for the presence of these features was faster than for their absence. If the task was easy, the addition of these features could also disrupt performance, even if they were irrelevant for the search task. Another important finding was that the search for a target that differed in two properties from the distractors was faster than a task with only a single property difference, although this was only found if the two target properties were non-salient. This means that shape and texture can be effectively integrated. Finally, it was found that edges are more beneficial to a search task than disrupting, whereas for roughness this was the other way round.

Bimanual integration of position and curvature in haptic perception

For small stimuli, it has been shown that subjects are very accurate in distinguishing a cylinder with an elliptical cross section from one with a circular cross section. In such a task, both curvature and length are integrated effectively. Large cylinders are explored differently: either by one hand or by two hands sliding over the surface. However, the same cues are available. We investigated the integration of position and curvature in unimanual and bimanual explorations. In Experiment 1, curved surfaces were presented as part of a horizontal cylinder with a cross section that was either a horizontally or a vertically elongated ellipse. We found that discrimination thresholds for unimanual exploration were significantly larger than for bimanual exploration. In Experiment 2, we found that position discrimination thresholds were independent of the type of exploration (unimanual or bimanual) and surprisingly also independent of the reference length. In Experiment 3, we found that discrimination thresholds for the position of the midsagittal plane were on an average lower than the position discrimination thresholds found in Experiment 2. From these findings, we conclude that the lower thresholds in Experiment 1 for bimanual exploration compared to unimanual exploration are due to the integration of curvature, not position or uncertainty of the midsagittal plane in unimanual exploration.

Touching curvature and feeling size: a contrast illusion

We know that our eyes can be deceiving. Here we demonstrate that we should not always trust our sense of touch either. Previous studies have shown that when pinching an object between thumb and index finger, we can under many circumstances accurately perceive its size. In contrast, the current results show that the local curvature at the areas of contact between the object and the fingers causes systematic under- or overestimation of the object's size. This is rather surprising given that local curvature is not directly related to the object's size. We suggest an explanation in terms of a contrast between the finger separation and an inferred relationship between local curvature and size. This study provides the first demonstration of an illusory haptic size percept caused by local curvature in a pinch grip.
