Spatiotemporal Thermal Control Effects on Thermal Grill Illusion

The thermal grill illusion induces a pain sensation under a spatial display of warmth and coolness of approximately 40 °C; and 20 °C. To realize virtual pain display more universally during the virtual reality experience, we proposed a spatiotemporal control method to realize a variable thermal grill illusion and evaluated the effect of the method. First, we examined whether there was a change in the period until pain occurred due to the spatial temperature distribution of pre-warming and pre-cooling and verified whether the period until pain occurred became shorter as the temperature difference between pre-warming and pre-cooling increased. Next, we examined the effect of the number of grids on the illusion and verified the following facts. In terms of the pain area, the larger the thermal area, the larger the pain area. In terms of the magnitude of the pain, the larger the thermal area, the greater the magnitude of the sensation of pain.

Intensity-Adjustable Non-Contact Cold Sensation Presentation Based on the Vortex Effect

Cold sensations of varying intensities are perceived when human skin is subject to diverse environments. The accurate presentation of temperature changes is important to elicit immersive sensations in applications such as virtual reality. In this article, we developed a method to elicit intensity-adjustable non-contact cold sensations based on the vortex effect. We applied this effect to generate cold air at approximately 0 ^°C and varied the skin temperature over a wide range. The perception of different temperatures can be elicited by adjusting the volume flow rate of the cold air. Additionally, we introduced a cooling model to relate the changes in skin temperature to various parameters such as the cold air volume flow rate and distance from the cold air outlet to the skin. For validation, we conducted measurement experiments and found that our model can estimate the change in skin temperature with a root mean-square error of 0.16 ^°C. Furthermore, we evaluated the performance of a prototype in psychophysical cold discrimination experiments based on the discrimination threshold. Thus, cold sensations of varying intensities can be generated by varying the parameters. These cold sensations can be combined with images, sounds, and other stimuli to create an immersive and realistic artificial environment.

Thermal Textile Pixels: The Characterisation of Temporal and Spatial Thermal Development

This study introduces the concept of a thermal textile pixel, a spatially and temporally defined textile structure that shows spatial and temporal thermal contrast and can be used in the context of thermal communication. A study was performed investigating (a) in-plane and (b) out-of-plane thermal signal behaviour for knitted structures made of three different fibre types; namely, polyamide, wool, and metal containing Shieldex yarn, and two different knitting structures: plain knit and terry knit. The model thermal source was a Peltier element. For (a), a thermography set-up was used to monitor the spatial development of thermal contrast, and for (b), an arrangement with thermocouple measuring temperature development over time. Results show that the use of conductive materials such as Shieldex is unnecessary for the plain knit if only heating is required, whereas such use significantly improves performance for the terry knit structures. The findings demonstrate that the textile pixel is able to spatially and temporally focus thermal signals, thereby making it viable for use as an interface for thermal communication devices. Having well-defined thermal textile pixels opens up potential for the development of matrices for more complex information conveyance.

Thermal Perception and Thermal Devices Used on Body Parts Other Than Hand or Face

Most fundamental research on thermal perception focuses on the fingers or the hand. Also most existing and proposed thermal devices are meant to be applied to hand or fingers. However, if the hands are needed for other tasks, application of thermal stimulation to other body regions should be considered. This paper surveys the literature on thermal perception and thermal devices relevant to such other body regions. It starts with a short description of the experimental methods used in the various studies, such as the methods of limits, the two-alternative forced choice method, and magnitude estimation. This is followed by thermal psychophysical studies on detection, adaptation, spatial summation, and resolution. Next some striking thermal illusions are presented, such as a thermal grill and a seemingly continuously warming or cooling stimulus. Finally, the few studies on thermal communication and applications are summarized. These latter studies mainly focus on communicating emotions or playing computer games. The overall conclusion of this survey is that thermal devices should not focus on conveying complex messages, but especially in the areas of gaming or communication there seem to be interesting possibilities for further developments.

Dynamics and Perception in the Thermal Grill Illusion

A basic challenge in perception research is to understand how sensory inputs from physical environments and the body are integrated in order to facilitate perceptual inferences. Thermal perception, which arises through heat transfer between extrinsic sources and body tissues, is an integral part of natural haptic experiences, and thermal feedback technologies have potential applications in wearable computing, virtual reality, and other areas. While physics dictates that thermal percepts can be slow, often unfolding over timescales measured in seconds, much faster perceptual responses can occur in the thermal grill illusion. The latter refers to a burning-like sensation that can be evoked when innocuous warm and cool stimuli are applied to the skin in juxtaposed fashion. Here, we show that perceptual response times to the thermal grill illusion decrease systematically with perceived intensity. Using results from behavioral experiments in combination with a physics-based description of tissue heating, we develop a simple model explaining the perception of the illusion through the evolution of internal tissue temperatures. The results suggest that improved understanding of the physical mechanisms of tissue heating may aid our understanding of thermal perception, as exemplified by the thermal grill illusion, and might point toward more efficient methods for thermal feedback.

Toward Whole-Hand Kinesthetic Feedback: A Survey of Force Feedback Gloves

Force feedback gloves have found many applications in fields such as teleoperation and virtual reality. In order to enhance the immersive feeling of interaction with remote or virtual environments, glove-like haptic devices are used, which enable users to touch and manipulate virtual objects in a more intuitive and direct way via the dexterous manipulation and sensitive perception capabilities of human hands. In this survey, we aim to identify the gaps between existing force feedback gloves and the desired ones that can provide robust and realistic sensation of the interaction with diverse virtual environments. By examining existing force feedback gloves, the pros and cons of existing design solutions to the major sub-systems including sensing, actuation, control, transmission and structure are discussed. Future research topics are put forward with design challenges being elaborated. Innovative design solutions are needed to enable the utility of wearable haptic gloves in the upcoming virtual reality era.
