A Stochastic Approach to Diffeomorphic Point Set Registration with Landmark Constraints

A Bayesian Formulation of Coherent Point Drift

Coherent point drift is a well-known algorithm for solving point set registration problems, i.e., finding corresponding points between shapes represented as point sets. Despite its advantages over other state-of-the-art algorithms, theoretical and practical issues remain. Among theoretical issues, (1) it is unknown whether the algorithm always converges, and (2) the meaning of the parameters concerning motion coherence is unclear. Among practical issues, (3) the algorithm is relatively sensitive to target shape rotation, and (4) acceleration of the algorithm is restricted to the use of the Gaussian kernel. To overcome these issues and provide a different and more general perspective to the algorithm, we formulate coherent point drift in a Bayesian setting. The formulation brings the following consequences and advances to the field: convergence of the algorithm is guaranteed by variational Bayesian inference; the definition of motion coherence as a prior distribution provides a basis for interpretation of the parameters; rigid and non-rigid registration can be performed in a single algorithm, enhancing robustness against target rotation. We also propose an acceleration scheme for the algorithm that can be applied to non-Gaussian kernels and that provides greater efficiency than coherent point drift.

Different Medical Image Registration Techniques: A Comparative Analysis

Background:

Image registration provides major role in real world applications and classic digital image processing. Image registration is carried out for more than one image and this image was captured from a different location, different sensors, different time and different viewpoints.

Discussion:

This paper deals with the comparative analysis of various registration techniques and here six registration techniques depending upon intensity, phase correlation, image feature, area, control points and mutual information are compared. Comparative analysis for different methodologies shows the advantages of one method over the other methods. The foremost objective of this paper is to deliver a complete reference source for the scholars interested in registration, irrespective of specific application extents.

Conclusion:

Finally performance analyses are evaluated for the medical datasets and comparison is graphically shown with the MATLAB simulation tool.

A Review of Point Set Registration: From Pairwise Registration to Groupwise Registration

This paper presents a comprehensive literature review on point set registration. The state-of-the-art modeling methods and algorithms for point set registration are discussed and summarized. Special attention is paid to methods for pairwise registration and groupwise registration. Some of the most prominent representative methods are selected to conduct qualitative and quantitative experiments. From the experiments we have conducted on 2D and 3D data, CPD-GL pairwise registration algorithm and JRMPC groupwise registration algorithm seem to outperform their rivals both in accuracy and computational complexity. Furthermore, future research directions and avenues in the area are identified.

Local-Density-Based Optimal Granulation and Manifold Information Granule Description

Constructing information granules (IGs) has been of significant interest to the discipline of granular computing. The principle of justifiable granularity has been proposed to guide the design of IGs, opening an avenue of pursuits of building IGs carried out on a basis of well-defined and intuitively appealing principles. However, how to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the resulting constructs is an open issue. In this paper, we present a local-density-based optimal granulation model (LoDOG), exhibiting evident advantages: 1) it can detect arbitrarily-shaped IGs and 2) it finds the optimal granulation solutions with O(N) complexity, once the leading tree structure has been constructed. We describe IGs of arbitrary shapes using a small collection of landmark points positioned on the skeleton of the underlying manifold, which contribute to approximate reconstruction capabilities of the original dataset. A dissimilarity metric is developed to evaluate the quality of the obtained reconstruction. The interpretability of LoDOG IGs is discussed. Theoretical analysis and empirical evaluations are covered to demonstrate the effectiveness of LoDOG and the manifold description.

Nonrigid Point Set Registration by Preserving Local Connectivity

This paper is concerned with the nonrigid point set registration problem and a probability-based registration algorithm with local connectivity preservation is proposed. A unified formulation for point set registration problem is introduced and the derived energy function is composed of three parts, distance measurement item, transformation constraint item, and correspondence constraint item. In order to preserve the local structure of point set, the definitions of -connected neighbors and connectivity matrix are given and the local connectivity constraint is constructed as a weighted least square error item. The point set registration problem is formulated in the expectation-maximization algorithm scheme and the optimal spatial transformation and correspondence matrix are estimated simultaneously. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by applying the method to synthetic point sets and real scenarios of hand shapes and surface-mount technology components.
