Cross-Modal Retrieval With Noisy Correspondence via Consistency Refining and Mining

The success of existing cross-modal retrieval (CMR) methods heavily rely on the assumption that the annotated cross-modal correspondence is faultless. In practice, however, the correspondence of some pairs would be inevitably contaminated during data collection or annotation, thus leading to the so-called Noisy Correspondence (NC) problem. To alleviate the influence of NC, we propose a novel method termed Consistency REfining And Mining (CREAM) by revealing and exploiting the difference between correspondence and consistency. Specifically, the correspondence and the consistency only be coincident for true positive and true negative pairs, while being distinct for false positive and false negative pairs. Based on the observation, CREAM employs a collaborative learning paradigm to detect and rectify the correspondence of positives, and a negative mining approach to explore and utilize the consistency. Thanks to the consistency refining and mining strategy of CREAM, the overfitting on the false positives could be prevented and the consistency rooted in the false negatives could be exploited, thus leading to a robust CMR method. Extensive experiments verify the effectiveness of our method on three image-text benchmarks including Flickr30K, MS-COCO, and Conceptual Captions. Furthermore, we adopt our method into the graph matching task and the results demonstrate the robustness of our method against fine-grained NC problem. Population-wise labeling of sulcal graphs using multi-graph matching

Population-wise matching of the cortical folds is necessary to compute statistics, a required step for e.g. identifying biomarkers of neurological or psychiatric disorders. The difficulty arises from the massive inter-individual variations in the morphology and spatial organization of the folds. The task is challenging both methodologically and conceptually. In the widely used registration-based techniques, these variations are considered as noise and the matching of folds is only implicit. Alternative approaches are based on the extraction and explicit identification of the cortical folds. In particular, representing cortical folding patterns as graphs of sulcal basins-termed sulcal graphs-enables to formalize the task as a graph-matching problem. In this paper, we propose to address the problem of sulcal graph matching directly at the population level using multi-graph matching techniques. First, we motivate the relevance of the multi-graph matching framework in this context. We then present a procedure for generating populations of artificial sulcal graphs, which allows us to benchmark several state-of-the-art multi-graph matching methods. Our results on both artificial and real data demonstrate the effectiveness of multi-graph matching techniques in obtaining a population-wise consistent labeling of cortical folds at the sulcal basin level.

Small Object Detection via Pixel Level Balancing With Applications to Blood Cell Detection

Object detection technology has been widely used in medical field, such as detecting the images of blood cell to count the changes and distribution for assisting the diagnosis of diseases. However, detecting small objects is one of the most challenging and important problems especially in medical scenarios. Most of the objects in medical images are very small but influential. Improving the detection performance of small objects is a very meaningful topic for medical detection. Current researches mainly focus on the extraction of small object features and data augmentation for small object samples, all of these researches focus on extracting the feature space of small objects better. However, in the training process of a detection model, objects of different sizes are mixed together, which may interfere with each other and affect the performance of small object detection. In this paper, we propose a method called pixel level balancing (PLB), which takes into account the number of pixels contained in the detection box as an impact factor to characterize the size of the inspected objects, and uses this as an impact factor. The training loss of each object of different size is adjusted by a weight dynamically, so as to improve the accuracy of small object detection. Finally, through experiments, we demonstrate that the size of objects in object detection interfere with each other. So that we can improve the accuracy of small object detection through PLB operation. This method can perform well with blood cell detection in our experiments.

CSR-Net: Learning Adaptive Context Structure Representation for Robust Feature Correspondence

Feature matching, which refers to identifying and then corresponding the same or similar visual pattern from two or more images, is a key technique in any image processing task that requires establishing good correspondences between images. Given potential correspondences (matches) in two scenes, a novel whole-part deep learning framework, termed as Context Structure Representation Network (CSR-Net), is designed to infer the probabilities of arbitrary correspondences being inliers. Traditional approaches commonly build the local relation between correspondences by manually engineered criteria. Different from existing attempts, the main idea of our work is to learn explicitly neighborhood structure of each correspondence, allowing us to formulate the matching problem into a dynamic local structure consensus evaluation in an end-to-end fashion. For this purpose, we propose a permutation-invariant STructure Representation (STR) learning module, which can easily merge different types of networks into a unified architecture to deal with sparse matches directly. By the collaborative use of STR, we introduce a Context-Aware Attention (CAA) mechanism to adaptively re-calibrate structure features via a rotation-invariant context aware encoding and simple feature gating, thus arising the ability of fine-grained patterns recognition. Moreover, to further weaken the cost of establishing reliable correspondences, the CSR-Net is formulated as whole-part consensus learning, where the aim of whole level is compensating rigid transformations. In order to demonstrate our CSR-Net can effectively boost the baselines, we intensively experiment on image matching and other visual tasks. The results of the experiment confirm that the matching performances of CSR-Net have significantly improved over nine state-of-the-art competitors.
