Hip Exoskeleton for Cycling Assistance

Cycling stands as one of the most widely embraced leisure activities and serves purposes such as exercise, rehabilitation, and commuting. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of assisting three unimpaired participants (age: 34.0 ± 7.9 years, height: 1.86 ± 0.02 m, weight: 75.7 ± 12.7 kg) using the GuroX hip exoskeleton, originally designed for walking assistance, during cycling against a resistance of 1 W/kg. The performance evaluation employed a sweep protocol that manipulated the timing of the exoskeleton's peak extension and flexion torque in addition to human-in-the-loop optimization to enhance these timings based on metabolic cost. Our findings indicate that with a peak assistance torque of approximately 10.3 Nm for extension and flexion, the GuroX substantially reduced the net metabolic cost of cycling by 31.4 ± 8.1% and 26.4 ± 14.1% compared to transparent and without exoskeleton conditions, respectively. This demonstrates the significant potential of a hip exoskeleton developed for walking assistance to profoundly benefit cycling. Additionally, customizing the assistance strategy proves beneficial in maximizing assistance. While we attribute the average motor power to be a major contributor to the reduced cycling effort, participant feedback suggests that user comfort and synchronization between the user and exoskeleton may have played integral roles. Further research should validate our initial findings by employing a larger participant pool in real-world conditions. Incorporating a more diverse set of parameters for the human-in-the-loop optimization could enhance individualized assistance strategies.

Experiment-free exoskeleton assistance via learning in simulation

Exoskeletons have enormous potential to improve human locomotive performance1-3. However, their development and broad dissemination are limited by the requirement for lengthy human tests and handcrafted control laws2. Here we show an experiment-free method to learn a versatile control policy in simulation. Our learning-in-simulation framework leverages dynamics-aware musculoskeletal and exoskeleton models and data-driven reinforcement learning to bridge the gap between simulation and reality without human experiments. The learned controller is deployed on a custom hip exoskeleton that automatically generates assistance across different activities with reduced metabolic rates by 24.3%, 13.1% and 15.4% for walking, running and stair climbing, respectively. Our framework may offer a generalizable and scalable strategy for the rapid development and widespread adoption of a variety of assistive robots for both able-bodied and mobility-impaired individuals.

Shaping high-performance wearable robots for human motor and sensory reconstruction and enhancement

Most wearable robots such as exoskeletons and prostheses can operate with dexterity, while wearers do not perceive them as part of their bodies. In this perspective, we contend that integrating environmental, physiological, and physical information through multi-modal fusion, incorporating human-in-the-loop control, utilizing neuromuscular interface, employing flexible electronics, and acquiring and processing human-robot information with biomechatronic chips, should all be leveraged towards building the next generation of wearable robots. These technologies could improve the embodiment of wearable robots. With optimizations in mechanical structure and clinical training, the next generation of wearable robots should better facilitate human motor and sensory reconstruction and enhancement.

Optimization of Torque-Control Model for Quasi-Direct-Drive Knee Exoskeleton Robots Based on Regression Forecasting

The choice of torque curve in lower-limb enhanced exoskeleton robots is a key problem in the control of lower-limb exoskeleton robots. As a human-machine coupled system, mapping from sensor data to joint torque is complex and non-linear, making it difficult to accurately model using mathematical tools. In this research study, the knee torque data of an exoskeleton robot climbing up stairs were obtained using an optical motion-capture system and three-dimensional force-measuring tables, and the inertial measurement unit (IMU) data of the lower limbs of the exoskeleton robot were simultaneously collected. Nonlinear approximations can be learned using machine learning methods. In this research study, a multivariate network model combining CNN and LSTM was used for nonlinear regression forecasting, and a knee joint torque-control model was obtained. Due to delays in mechanical transmission, communication, and the bottom controller, the actual torque curve will lag behind the theoretical curve. In order to compensate for these delays, different time shifts of the torque curve were carried out in the model-training stage to produce different control models. The above model was applied to a lightweight knee exoskeleton robot. The performance of the exoskeleton robot was evaluated using surface electromyography (sEMG) experiments, and the effects of different time-shifting parameters on the performance were compared. During testing, the sEMG activity of the rectus femoris (RF) decreased by 20.87%, while the sEMG activity of the vastus medialis (VM) increased by 17.45%. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of this control model in assisting knee joints in climbing up stairs.

Continuous Locomotion Mode and Task Identification for an Assistive Exoskeleton Based on Neuromuscular-Mechanical Fusion

Human walking parameters exhibit significant variability depending on the terrain, speed, and load. Assistive exoskeletons currently focus on the recognition of locomotion terrain, ignoring the identification of locomotion tasks, which are also essential for control strategies. The aim of this study was to develop an interface for locomotion mode and task identification based on a neuromuscular-mechanical fusion algorithm. The modes of level and incline and tasks of speed and load were explored, and seven able-bodied participants were recruited. A continuous stream of assistive decisions supporting timely exoskeleton control was achieved according to the classification of locomotion. We investigated the optimal algorithm, feature set, window increment, window length, and robustness for precise identification and synchronization between exoskeleton assistive force and human limb movements (human-machine collaboration). The best recognition results were obtained when using a support vector machine, a root mean square/waveform length/acceleration feature set, a window length of 170, and a window increment of 20. The average identification accuracy reached 98.7% ± 1.3%. These results suggest that the surface electromyography-acceleration can be effectively used for locomotion mode and task identification. This study contributes to the development of locomotion mode and task recognition as well as exoskeleton control for seamless transitions.

Human-in-the-Loop Optimization of Wearable Robotic Devices to Improve Human-Robot Interaction: A Systematic Review

This article presents a systematic review on wearable robotic devices that use human-in-the-loop optimization (HILO) strategies to improve human-robot interaction. A total of 46 HILO studies were identified and divided into upper and lower limb robotic devices. The main aspects from HILO were identified, reviewed, and classified in four areas: 1) human-machine systems; 2) optimization methods; 3) control strategies; and 4) experimental protocols. A variety of objective functions (physiological, biomechanical, and subjective), optimization strategies, and optimized control parameters configurations used in different control strategies are presented and analyzed. An overview of experimental protocols is provided, including metrics, tasks, and conditions tested. Moreover, the relevance given to training or adaptation periods was explored. We outline an HILO framework that includes current wearable robots, optimization strategies, objective functions, control strategies, and experimental protocols. We conclude by highlighting current research gaps and defining future directions to improve the development of advanced HILO strategies in upper and lower limb wearable robots.

Ground Contact Force and Moment Estimation for Human-Exoskeleton Systems Using Dynamic Decoupled Coordinate System and Minimum Energy Hypothesis

Estimating the contact forces and moments (CFMs) between exoskeletons' feet and the ground is a prerequisite for calculating exoskeletons' joint moments. However, comfortable, portable, and high-precision force sensors for CFM detection are difficult to design and manufacture. In addition, there are many unknown CFM components (six force components and six moment components in the double-support phase). These reasons make it challenging to estimate CFMs precisely. In this paper, we propose a novel method for estimating these CFMs based on a proposed dynamic decoupled coordinate system (DDCS) and the minimum energy hypothesis. By decomposing these CFMs into a DDCS, the number of unknowns can be significantly reduced from twelve to two. Meanwhile, the minimum energy hypothesis provides a relatively reliable target for optimizing the remaining two unknown variables. We verify the accuracy of this method using a public data set about human walking. The validation shows that the proposed method is capable of estimating CFMs. This study provides a practical way to estimate the CFMs under the soles, which contributes to reducing the research and development costs of exoskeletons by avoiding the need for expensive plantar sensors. The sensor-free approach also reduces the dependence on high-precision, portable, and comfortable CFM detection sensors, which are usually difficult to design.

An EMG-Based Objective Function for Human-in-the-Loop Optimization

Advancements in wearable robots aim to improve the users' motion, performance, and comfort by optimizing, mainly, energetic cost (EC). However, EC is a noisy measurement with a physiological delayed response that requires long evaluation periods and wearing an uncomfortable mask. This study aims to estimate and minimize an EMG-based objective function that describes the natural energetic expenditure of individuals walking. This objective is assessed by combining multiple electromyography (EMG) variables from the EMG intensity and muscle synergies. To evaluate this objective function simply and repeatedly, we prescribed step frequency (SF) via a metronome and optimized this frequency to minimize muscle activity demands. Further, a linear mixed-effects model was fitted for EC, with the EMG variables as fixed-effects and a random intercept that varies by participant. After the model was fitted to the data, a cubic polynomial was used to identify the optimal SF that reduces the overall EMG-based objective function. Our analysis outlines that the proposed objective function is comparable to the EC during walking, the primary objective function used in human-in-the-loop optimization. Thus, this EMG-based objective function could be potentially used to optimize wearable robots and improve human-robot interaction.

Adaptive assistive robotics: a framework for triadic collaboration between humans and robots

Robots and other assistive technologies have a huge potential to help society in domains ranging from factory work to healthcare. However, safe and effective control of robotic agents in these environments is complex, especially when it involves close interactions and multiple actors. We propose an effective framework for optimizing the behaviour of robots and complementary assistive technologies in systems comprising a mix of human and technological agents with numerous high-level goals. The framework uses a combination of detailed biomechanical modelling and weighted multi-objective optimization to allow for the fine tuning of robot behaviours depending on the specification of the task at hand. We illustrate our framework via two case studies across assisted living and rehabilitation scenarios, and conduct simulations and experiments of triadic collaboration in practice. Our results indicate a marked benefit to the triadic approach, showing the potential to improve outcome measures for human agents in robot-assisted tasks.

Modelling the interaction between wearable assistive devices and digital human models-A systematic review

Exoskeletons, orthoses, exosuits, assisting robots and such devices referred to as wearable assistive devices are devices designed to augment or protect the human body by applying and transmitting force. Due to the problems concerning cost- and time-consuming user tests, in addition to the possibility to test different configurations of a device, the avoidance of a prototype and many more advantages, digital human models become more and more popular for evaluating the effects of wearable assistive devices on humans. The key indicator for the efficiency of assistance is the interface between device and human, consisting mainly of the soft biological tissue. However, the soft biological tissue is mostly missing in digital human models due to their rigid body dynamics. Therefore, this systematic review aims to identify interaction modelling approaches between wearable assistive devices and digital human models and especially to study how the soft biological tissue is considered in the simulation. The review revealed four interaction modelling approaches, which differ in their accuracy to recreate the occurring interactions in reality. Furthermore, within these approaches there are some incorporating the appearing relative motion between device and human body due to the soft biological tissue in the simulation. The influence of the soft biological tissue on the force transmission due to energy absorption on the other side is not considered in any publication yet. Therefore, the development of an approach to integrate the viscoelastic behaviour of soft biological tissue in the digital human models could improve the design of the wearable assistive devices and thus increase its efficiency and efficacy.

Predicting the metabolic cost of exoskeleton-assisted squatting using foot pressure features and machine learning

Introduction: Recent studies found that wearable exoskeletons can reduce physical effort and fatigue during squatting. In particular, subject-specific assistance helped to significantly reduce physical effort, shown by reduced metabolic cost, using human-in-the-loop optimization of the exoskeleton parameters. However, measuring metabolic cost using respiratory data has limitations, such as long estimation times, presence of noise, and user discomfort. A recent study suggests that foot contact forces can address those challenges and be used as an alternative metric to the metabolic cost to personalize wearable robot assistance during walking. Methods: In this study, we propose that foot center of pressure (CoP) features can be used to estimate the metabolic cost of squatting using a machine learning method. Five subjects' foot pressure and metabolic cost data were collected as they performed squats with an ankle exoskeleton at different assistance conditions in our prior study. In this study, we extracted statistical features from the CoP squat trajectories and fed them as input to a random forest model, with the metabolic cost as the output. Results: The model predicted the metabolic cost with a mean error of 0.55 W/kg on unseen test data, with a high correlation (r = 0.89, p < 0.01) between the true and predicted cost. The features of the CoP trajectory in the medial-lateral direction of the foot (xCoP), which relate to ankle eversion-inversion, were found to be important and highly correlated with metabolic cost. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that increased ankle eversion (outward roll of the ankle), which reflects a suboptimal squatting strategy, results in higher metabolic cost. Higher ankle eversion has been linked with the etiology of chronic lower limb injuries. Hence, a CoP-based cost function in human-in-the-loop optimization could offer several advantages, such as reduced estimation time, injury risk mitigation, and better user comfort.

Patient-Specific Exercises with the Development of an End-Effector Type Upper Limb Rehabilitation Robot

End-effector type upper limb rehabilitation robots (ULRRs) are connected to patients at one distal point, making them have simple structures and less complex control algorithms, and they can avoid abnormal motion and posture of the target anatomical joints and specific muscles. Given that the end-effector type ULRR focuses more on the rehabilitation of the combined motion of upper limb chain, assisting the patient to perform collaborative tasks, and its intervention has some advantages than the exoskeleton type ULRR, we developed a novel three-degree-of-freedom (DOF) end-effector type ULRR. The advantage of the mechanical design is that the designed end-effector type ULRR can achieve three DOFs by using a four-bar mechanism and a lifting mechanism; we also developed the patient-specific exercises including patient-passive exercise and patient-cooperative exercise, and the advantage of the developed patient-cooperative exercise is that we simplified the human-robot coupling system model into a single spring system instead of the mass-spring-damp system, which efficiently improved the response speed of the control system. In terms of the organization structure of the work, we introduced the end-effector type ULRR's mechanical design, control system, inverse solution of positions, patient-passive exercise based on the inverse solution of positions and the linear position interpolation of servo drives, and patient-cooperative exercise based on the spring model, in sequence. Experiments with three healthy subjects have been conducted, with results showing good trajectory tracking performance in patient-passive exercise and showing effective, flexible, and good real-time interactive performance in patient-cooperative exercise.
