Vector Flow Imaging of a Highly Laden Suspension in a Zinc-Air Flow Battery Model

A Comparative Review of Lead-Acid, Lithium-Ion and Ultra-Capacitor Technologies and Their Degradation Mechanisms

As renewable energy sources, such as solar systems, are becoming more popular, the focus is moving into more effective utilization of these energy sources and harvesting more energy for intermittency reduction in this renewable source. This is opening up a market for methods of energy storage and increasing interest in batteries, as they are, as it stands, the foremost energy storage device available to suit a wide range of requirements. This interest has brought to light the downfalls of batteries and resultantly made room for the investigation of ultra-capacitors as a solution to these downfalls. One of these downfalls is related to the decrease in capacity, and temperamentality thereof, of a battery when not used precisely as stated by the supplier. The usable capacity is reliant on the complete discharge/charge cycles the battery can undergo before a 20% degradation in its specified capacity is observed. This article aims to investigate what causes this degradation, what aggravates it and how the degradation affects the usage of the battery. This investigation will lead to the identification of a gap in which this degradation can be decreased, prolonging the usage and increasing the feasibility of the energy storage devices.

Ultrasound Super-Resolution Flow Measurement of Suspensions in Narrow Channels

Zinc-air flow batteries provide a scalable and cost-efficient energy storage solution. However, the achieved power density depends on the local flow conditions of the zinc particle suspension in the electrochemical cell. Numerical modeling is challenging due to the complex multiphase fluid and the interaction of flow and electrochemistry. Hence, performing experiments is crucial to investigate the influence of the flow conditions on the electrical performance, which requires flow instrumentation for the opaque suspension. To resolve the flow field across the 2.6-mm-wide flow channel of the investigated zinc-air flow battery (ZAB), a spatial resolution below 100 [Formula: see text] has to be typically achieved. Using ultrasound techniques, the achieved spatial resolution is limited by the trade-off between ultrasound frequency and imaging depth. This trade-off is even more critical for suspensions due to the scattering of the ultrasound, which increases strongly with frequency. We propose super-resolution particle tracking velocimetry (SRPTV) to overcome this limitation by achieving the required spatial resolution at a low ultrasound frequency. SRPTV is based on the super-resolution technique ultrasound localization microscopy, which is adapted to strongly scattering suspensions by using a dual-frequency-phased array and applying a coherence weighting beamformer to suppress speckles, which result from the scattering at the zinc particles of the suspension. The spatial resolution and the velocity uncertainty are characterized through calibration measurement and numerical simulation. A spatial resolution of 66 [Formula: see text] at an excitation wavelength of 330 [Formula: see text] was achieved, which is sufficient for performing flow investigation in an operational ZAB. The measured flow profile reveals shear-thinning properties and wall slip and therefore differs significantly from a parabolic flow profile of a Newtonian fluid. The presented technique offers potential for performing flow investigations of suspensions in small geometries with a spatial resolution beyond the diffraction limit.

Discharge profile of a zinc-air flow battery at various electrolyte flow rates and discharge currents

Nowadays, due to global warming stemming from excessive use of fossil fuel, there is considerable interest in promoting renewable energy sources. However, because of the intermittent nature of these energy sources, efficient energy storage systems are needed. In this regard, zinc-air flow batteries (ZAFBs) are seen as having the capability to fulfill this function. In flow batteries, the electrolyte is stored in external tanks and circulated through the cell. This study provides the requisite experimental data for parameter estimation as well as model validation of ZAFBs. Each data set includes: current (mA), voltage (V), capacity (mAh), specific capacity (mAh/g), energy (Wh), specific energy (mWh/g) and discharge time (h:min:s.ms). Discharge data involved forty experiments with discharge current in the range of 100–200 mA, and electrolyte flow rates in the range of 0–140 ml/min. Such data are crucial for the modelling and theoretical/experimental analysis of ZAFBs.
