Substituent Effects on the Ultraviolet Absorption Properties of 2,4-Dihydroxy Dibenzophenone

Substituent effects on the ultraviolet absorption properties of 2,4-dihydroxy dibenzophenone were investigated experimentally. Nine compounds of 2,4-dihydroxy dibenzophenone with different substituents were prepared by a solvent-free reaction of benzoyl chloride. The maximum absorption wavelength (λ_max) of these samples was measured, and their UV resistance properties in cotton fabric as well as in polyester were determined. The results show that the λ_max is dependent on the substituents at the benzylidene ring, and both electron donating substituents and electron withdrawing substituents cause a bathochromic shift. The UV resistance of fabric increases with the increase in compound concentration. The dyeing rate of each compound on polyester was higher than that of cotton. On cotton fabric, the dyeing rate of 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone was the highest, 77.8%. On polyester, that of 2,4-dihydroxy-4'-ethyl dibenzophenone was the highest, 84.1%. The study provides new insights into the effect of substituents on the properties of 2,4-dihydroxy dibenzophenone that are related to the whitening of cotton and polyester materials.

Barriers and Promises of the Developing Pigment Organelle Field

Many colors and patterns in nature are regulated by the packaging and processing of intracellular pigment-containing organelles within cells. Spanning both molecular and tissue-level spatial scales with chemical and physical (structural) elements of coloration, pigment organelles represent an important but largely understudied feature of every biological system capable of coloration. Although vertebrate melanosomes have historically been the best-known and most studied pigment organelle, recent reports suggest a surge in studies focusing on other pigment organelles producing a variety of non-melanic pigments, optic crystals and structural colors through their geometric arrangement. In this issue, we showcase the importance these integrative and comparative studies and discuss their results which aid in our understanding of organelle form and function in their native environment. Specifically, we highlight how pigment organelles can be studied at different scales of organization, across multiple species in biology, and with an interdisciplinary approach to better understand the biological and chemical mechanisms underlying color. This type of comparative approach provides evidence for a common origin and identity of membrane-bound pigment organelles not only in vertebrates, as was originally postulated 40 years ago, but in all animals. This indicates that we have much to gain by studying a variety of pigment organelles, as the specific biological context may provide important and unique insights into various aspects of its life. We conclude by highlighting some barriers to this research and discussing strategies to overcome them through a discussion of future directions for pigment organelle research.

Investigation on the formation mechanism of twinned crystals of hypoxanthine-doped beta-phase anhydrous guanine microplatelets

Herein, hypoxanthine-doped β phase anhydrous guanine (I-doped β-AG) twinned crystals with varying hypoxanthine contents were obtained in formamide. The occlusion of hypoxanthine in β-AG might be a key factor for formation of twinned β-AG crystals.

Substituent effects on the ultraviolet absorption properties of stilbene compounds-Models for molecular cores of absorbents

The effects of substituent X and Y on ultraviolet (UV) absorption properties of stilbene compounds XPhCHCHPhY (XSBY) were studied both experimentally and computationally from the viewpoint of UV maximum absorption wavelength (λ_max) and the corresponding energy (υ_max). In the studies, the contribution of substituents on υ_max shift was explored. The results show that with increase of electron withdrawing or electron donating ability of X or Y, there is an enhanced electron delocalization of XSBY that leads to bathochromic shift. Computational analyses based on density functional theory were conducted to elucidate the phenomena. It is disclosed that the υ_max values are significantly affected by the excited state, though the electronic effect of ground state cannot be ignored. Finally, on the basis of the respective influences of X and Y, a quantitative model, which was proved reliable by the leave-one-out method, was developed to scale the effects of terminal substituents on υ_max. According to the model, the effects of substituents X or Y exhibit almost the same action on υ_max owing to the symmetric skeleton of the XSBY compounds. The findings provide deep insight into the effects of terminal substituents on UV absorption properties of stilbene compounds, and the derived model enables practical expression of the relationship between substituents and UV absorption.

Controlled crystallization of anhydrous guanine β nano-platelets via an amorphous precursor

We realized a pure phase of anhydrous guanine (AG) β form for the first time via a transformation from hydrated amorphous guanine phase (HAmG). The specified transformation was probably due to the similar short-range order between AG β and HAmG.

Controlled crystallization of twinned crystalline guanine microplatelets

In this work, twinned anhydrous guanine β microplatelets were synthesized for the first time in the presence of a polyvinylpyrrolidone. The twinning angle of the two c axes for the synthetic and biogenic twinned guanine crystals is 84°, very similar to each other.

The role of ultraviolet colour in the assessment of mimetic accuracy between Batesian mimics and their models: a case study using ant-mimicking spiders

The use of ultraviolet (UV) cues for intra- and inter-specific communication is common in many animal species. Still, the role of UV signals under some predator-prey contexts, such as Batesian mimicry, is not clear. Batesian mimicry is a defensive strategy by which a palatable species (the mimic) resembles an unpalatable or noxious species (the model) to avoid predation. This strategy has evolved independently in many different taxa that are predated by species capable of UV perception. Moreover, there is considerable variation in how accurately Batesian mimics resemble their models across species. Our aim was to investigate how UV colour contributed to mimetic accuracy using several ant-mimicking spider species as a case study. We measured the reflectance spectrum (300-700 nm) for several species of mimics and models, and we tested whether they differ in visible and UV colour. We modelled whether two different predators could discriminate between mimics and models using colour information. We found that generally, ant-mimicking spiders differed significantly from their ant models in UV colour and that information from the visible range of light cannot be extrapolated into the UV. Our modelling suggested that wasps should be able to discriminate between mimics and models combining information from visible and the UV light, whereas birds may not discriminate between them. Thus, we show that UV colour can influence mimic accuracy and we discuss its potential role in Batesian mimicry. We conclude that colour, especially in the UV range, should be taken into account when measuring mimetic accuracy.
