Incorporating in situ habitat patchiness in site selection models reveals that site fidelity is not always a consequence of animal choice

Environmental and individual determinants of burrow-site microhabitat selection, occupancy, and fidelity in eastern chipmunks living in a pulsed-resource ecosystem

Background

Habitat selection has major consequences on individual fitness, particularly selection for breeding sites such as nests or burrows. Theory predicts that animals will first use optimal habitats or rearrange their distribution by moving to higher-quality habitats whenever possible, for instance when another resident disperses or dies, or when environmental changes occur. External constraints, such as predation risk or resource abundance, and interindividual differences in age, sex and body condition can lead to variation in animals' perception of habitat quality. Following habitat use by individuals over their lifetime is thus essential to understand the causes of variation in habitat selection within a population.

Methods

We used burrow occupancy data collected over eight years to assess burrow-site selection in a population of wild eastern chipmunks (Tamias striatus) relying on pulsed resources. We first compared characteristics of burrow microhabitats with those of equivalent unused plots. We then investigated the factors influencing the frequency of burrow occupation over time, and the individual and environmental causes of annual burrow fidelity decisions.

Results

Our results indicate that chipmunks select microhabitats with a greater number of woody debris and greater slopes. Microhabitats of burrows with higher occupancy rates had a lower shrub stratum, were less horizontally opened and their occupants' sex-ratio was skewed towards males. Burrow fidelity was higher in non-mast years and positively related to the occupant's age, microhabitat canopy cover and density of large red maples.

Conclusion

The quality of a burrow microhabitat appears to be determined in part by characteristics that favour predation avoidance, but consideration of occupancy and fidelity patterns over several years also highlighted the importance of including individual and contextual factors in habitat selection studies.

Developing in a warming intertidal, negative carry over effects of heatwave conditions in development to the pentameral starfish in Parvulastra exigua

Ocean warming and increasing incidence of marine heat waves (MHW) are having far-reaching impacts on coastal ecosystems. The small intertidal asterinid starfish, Parvulastra exigua, in south-eastern Australia, occurs in a global warming hotspot. Development occurs in the intertidal as this species lays eggs and has benthic larvae. The impact of temperature on development to the juvenile was determined over a broad temperature range (12-28 °C) encompassing temperatures experienced during the breeding season (16-20 °C) and cool (- 4 °C) and warm (+10 °C) extremes with the higher temperatures (24-28 °C) simulating a MHW. As the larva to juvenile transition involves major body reorganisation, we determined the impact of temperature on metamorphosis and formation of the normal five-armed juvenile. Development was faster at the higher temperatures 24-28 °C, but survival decreased from 1 to 5 days post fertilisation (dpf). Mortality was evident from day 15 at 22 °C and no larvae survived to 20 dpf at 28 °C. Thermal tolerance decreased over developmental time and the thermal optimum for 95% survival to the 20 day old juvenile spanned from 12 to 20.0 °C with the lethal temperature for 50% survival being 23.5 °C (5.5 °C above ambient). Juveniles reared in 26 °C were smaller, suggesting application of the temperature size rule. Increased temperature (22-26 °C) perturbed pentamery with three, four, six and no-armed juveniles present, contrasting with the low level of non-pentamerous individuals (<3%) in the cooler cultures and in nature (five populations surveyed). Despite the high thermal tolerance in premetamorphic stages, negative carry over effects were evident in the juveniles. This shows the importance of considering the whole of development in climate warming studies. As sea surface temperatures increase and heatwaves become more prevalent, habitat warming will be detrimental to P. exigua populations.

Isometric scaling of faunal patchiness: Seagrass macrobenthic abundance across small spatial scales

Following earlier studies across 2115 → 33 m² scales (Barnes and Laurie, 2018), patchiness of macrobenthic abundance in intertidal Queensland seagrass was assessed by dispersion indices, spatial autocorrelation and hotspot analysis across a hierarchically-nested series of smaller scales (5.75 → 0.09 m²). Overall patterns of distribution and abundance over larger extents and with greater lag were mirrored across these smaller ones. Assemblage abundance per station varied by a factor of >10, but all three approaches showed effective constancy of total assemblage patchiness across all sub-2115 m² scales (across-scales-mean Lloyd's I_P of 1.06 and global Moran's I of 0.13). Equivalent constancy was also shown by most numerically-dominant species (scaling exponent β = 0.93-1.15). Decreasing patchiness of some species with decreasing scale, however, resulted in two no longer being patchily dispersed across small scales. Significant hotspots of abundance occurred at a constant proportion of stations across scales, against a background of randomly scattered peak-abundance points.

Can transplanting enhance mobile marine invertebrates in ecologically engineered rock pools?

The field of eco-engineering has burgeoned in recent years in response to the proliferation of artificial structures. Adding water-retaining features to seawalls has been successful in increasing biodiversity relative to the surrounding structure. Artificial rock pools may not, however, completely mimic natural rock pools. Here, we compared natural colonisation, through dispersal and recruitment, of intertidal mobile species to water-retaining flowerpots on seawalls with that into rock pools. This represents the more usual 'passive' approach to eco-engineering where features are built to enhance biodiversity and are allowed to colonise naturally, as opposed to seeding or transplanting organisms to features. While flowerpots supported some mobile species not found on the seawall, other species common on natural shores did not recruit to flowerpots. Thus, in a second experiment we tested the effectiveness of an 'active' approach through transplanting mobile organisms to flowerpots to expedite the colonisation process. For the species examined, however, most individuals did not stay in the flowerpots for more than 24 h after being transplanted. Further understanding of the processes (e.g. dispersal distances, recruitment) influencing colonisation of eco-engineered habitats is needed to effectively inform management of marine infrastructure, particularly for projects targeted at restoration rather than enhancement.

The first observations of Ischnochiton (Mollusca, Polyplacophora) movement behaviour, with comparison between habitats differing in complexity

Most species of Ischnochiton are habitat specialists and are almost always found underneath unstable marine hard-substrata such as boulders. The difficulty of experimenting on these chitons without causing disturbance means little is known about their ecology despite their importance as a group that often contributes greatly to coastal species diversity. In the present study we measured among-boulder distributional patterns of Ischnochiton smaragdinus, and used time-lapse photography to quantify movement behaviours within different habitat types (pebble substrata and rock-platform). In intertidal rock-pools in South Australia, I. smaragdinus were significantly overdispersed among boulders, as most boulders had few individuals but a small proportion harboured large populations. I. smaragdinus individuals emerge from underneath boulders during nocturnal low-tides and move amongst the inter-boulder matrix (pebbles or rock-platform). Seventy-two percent of chitons in the pebble matrix did not move from one pebble to another within the periods of observation (55-130 min) but a small proportion moved across as many as five pebbles per hour, indicating a capacity for adults to migrate among disconnected habitat patches. Chitons moved faster and movement paths were less tortuous across rock-platform compared to pebble substrata, which included more discontinuities among substratum patches. Overall, we show that patterns of distribution at the boulder-scale, such as the observed overdispersion, must be set largely by active dispersal of adults across the substratum, and that differing substratum-types may affect the degree of adult dispersal for this and possibly other under-boulder chiton species.
