Abstract
This cross-sectional study investigated the epidemiology and risk factors associated with orthostatic hypotension (OH) and its severity in older adults residing in the Jizhou community of Tianjin and the Jimei community of Xiamen. The study, conducted from March to September 2019, involved adults aged over 60. A comprehensive questionnaire survey was administered, resulting in the enrolment of 4383 older adults. The overall prevalence of OH was found to be 11.7% (516 out of 4383). Notably, a significant gender difference was observed, with a prevalence of 10% among males (194 out of 1926) and 13.1% among females (322 out of 2457) (P=0.002). Among individuals with OH, 332 exhibited mild symptoms, 64 had moderate OH, 58 had severe OH cases, and 50 have very severe OH. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that being female, widowed, engaging in general social activities, and a history of hypertension, migraines, heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and mental health conditions (anxiety and depression) were independently associated with OH. Ordinal logistic regression analysis further confirmed that hypertension, migraine, and a history of general anesthesia surgery were independently associated with the severity of OH. This study highlights a relatively high prevalence of OH among older adults in the Jizhou community of Tianjin and the Jimei community of Xiamen, China. The identified risk factors, particularly social activities, and hypertension, significantly influence the severity of OH. Further examination is required to corroborate these findings and investigate potential interventions.

Abstract
Purpose In this study, we determined female nursing students' physical and mental state involvement by measuring heart rate variability and salivary α-amylase activity (αAMY). Methods The study included 108 students aged 20-21 with regular menstrual cycles. The basal body temperature method was used to determine the menstrual phases. Five indices were used: low and high frequency components, and their ratio, total power, and physical stress index. In addition, αAMY was measured using a salivary amylase monitor. A six-point scale was used for subjective mood evaluation. Repeated measures analysis of variance was performed for differences between groups, and the Tukey-Kramer method was used for multiple comparisons. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results The results suggested that the physical fatigue of the luteal phase is carried over into the menstrual phase, and the symptoms concomitant with the menstrual phase may manifest as poor mood. Furthermore, parasympathetic activity and stress coping skills tended to be higher, and sympathetic activity was lower during the menstrual phase, suggesting that students are more relaxed during the menstrual period. Conclusion Though the results were statistically not significant, the students were in a considerably better mood during the follicular phase than the menstrual phase, suggesting that the physical and mental states may differ between the early and late follicular phases. It may be possible to evaluate the mental and physical condition of female students by obtaining more values.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to examine the relationship between parity, postpartum depression (PPD), and mother-infant bonding (MIB) failure in the first month postpartum. Methods The study included 1,509 Japanese patients (748 primiparous and 761 multiparous). MIB was assessed using the Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale Japanese version (MIBS-J), which was translated in 2012, and its subscales, including lack of affection (LA) and anger and rejection (AR). Postpartum depression (PPD) was assessed using the Japanese version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and its subscales, including anxiety (ANX), anhedonia (ANH), and depression (DEP). Multiple regression analyses using interaction terms were performed to examine the association of parity with the MIBS-J and EPDS. Results Parity was significantly associated with AR. ANX and ANH were strongly associated with LA, and ANX and DEP were strongly associated with AR. The interaction term "parity×EPDS total" was significantly associated with MIBS-J total, LA, and AR scores. Conclusions Primiparas and mothers with high ANX had more negative emotions toward their children during the first month postpartum, and mothers with high ANX or ANH had less interest in their children.

Abstract
The transition from pregnancy into parturition is physiologically directed by maternal, fetal and placental tissues. We hypothesize that these processes may be reflected in maternal physiological metrics. We enrolled pregnant participants in the third-trimester (n = 118) to study continuously worn smart ring devices monitoring heart rate, heart rate variability, skin temperature, sleep and physical activity from negative temperature coefficient, 3-D accelerometer and infrared photoplethysmography sensors. Weekly surveys assessed labor symptoms, pain, fatigue and mood. We estimated the association between each metric, gestational age, and the likelihood of a participant's labor beginning prior to (versus after) the clinical estimated delivery date (EDD) of 40.0 weeks with mixed effects regression. A boosted random forest was trained on the physiological metrics to predict pregnancies that naturally passed the EDD versus undergoing onset of labor prior to the EDD. Here we report that many raw sleep, activity, pain, fatigue and labor symptom metrics are correlated with gestational age. As gestational age advances, pregnant individuals have lower resting heart rate 0.357 beats/minute/week, 0.84 higher heart rate variability (milliseconds) and shorter durations of physical activity and sleep. Further, random forest predictions determine pregnancies that would pass the EDD with accuracy of 0.71 (area under the receiver operating curve). Self-reported symptoms of labor correlate with increased gestational age and not with the timing of labor (relative to EDD) or onset of spontaneous labor. The use of maternal smart ring-derived physiological data in the third-trimester may improve prediction of the natural duration of pregnancy relative to the EDD.

Abstract
Pregnancy and childbirth are among the most dramatic physiological and emotional transformations of a lifetime. Despite their central importance to human survival, many gaps remain in our understanding of the temporal progression of and mechanisms underlying the transition to new parenthood. The goal of this paper is to outline the physiological and emotional development of the maternal-infant dyad from late pregnancy to the postpartum period, and to provide a framework to investigate this development using non-invasive timeseries. We focus on the interaction among neuroendocrine, emotional, and autonomic outputs in the context of late pregnancy, parturition, and post-partum. We then propose that coupled dynamics in these outputs can be leveraged to map both physiologic and pathologic pregnancy, parturition, and parenthood. This approach could address gaps in our knowledge and enable early detection or prediction of problems, with both personalized depth and broad population scale. Giving birth and caring for offspring are dynamic processes that can instill both love and fear. Maternal physiology continuously integrates fetal, social, and environmental cues. The result is coupled change in hormonal, autonomic nervous, and emotional output. Coupling may allow internal state to be assessed from peripheral autonomic markers. Such markers may identify healthy or pathologic pregnancy, parturition, and parenting, and enable creation of real-world tools.

Abstract
Oxytocin (OT), a nonapeptide, has a variety of functions. Despite extensive studies on OT over past decades, our understanding of its neural functions and their regulation remains incomplete. OT is mainly produced in OT neurons in the supraoptic nucleus (SON), paraventricular nucleus (PVN) and accessory nuclei between the SON and PVN. OT exerts neuromodulatory effects in the brain and spinal cord. While magnocellular OT neurons in the SON and PVN mainly innervate the pituitary and forebrain regions, and parvocellular OT neurons in the PVN innervate brainstem and spinal cord, the two sets of OT neurons have close interactions histologically and functionally. OT expression occurs at early life to promote mental and physical development, while its subsequent decrease in expression in later life stage accompanies aging and diseases. Adaptive changes in this OT system, however, take place under different conditions and upon the maturation of OT release machinery. OT can modulate social recognition and behaviors, learning and memory, emotion, reward, and other higher brain functions. OT also regulates eating and drinking, sleep and wakefulness, nociception and analgesia, sexual behavior, parturition, lactation and other instinctive behaviors. OT regulates the autonomic nervous system, and somatic and specialized senses. Notably, OT can have different modulatory effects on the same function under different conditions. Such divergence may derive from different neural connections, OT receptor gene dimorphism and methylation, and complex interactions with other hormones. In this review, brain functions of OT and their underlying neural mechanisms as well as the perspectives of their clinical usage are presented.

Abstract
We describe two novel fluorescent peptides (compounds 1 and 2) targeting oxytocin with a boron-dipyrromethenyl group as the fluorophore bound to an artificial peptide based on the oxytocin receptor, and their application for the analysis of oxytocin levels in human serum using nanometer-sized magnetic beads modified by fluorescent peptides (FMB-1 and FMB-2). Under the optimized experimental protocols, FMB-1 and FMB-2 emitted low levels of fluorescence but emitted much higher levels of fluorescence when associated with oxytocin. The detection limit of oxytocin by FMB-2 was 0.4 pM, which is approximately 37.5 times higher than that of conventional methods, such as ELISA. Using these fluorescent sensors, oxytocin was specifically detected over a wide linear range with high sensitivity, good reusability, stability, precision, and reproducibility. This fluorescent sensor-based detection system thus enabled the measurement of oxytocin levels in human serum, which has widespread applications for oxytocin assays across varied research fields.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is discussed whether fetal scalp stimulation (FSS) test is a reliable complimentary tool to cardiotocography (CTG) to assess fetal wellbeing during labor. The test is based on the assumption that a well-oxygenated fetus, in contrast to the depressed fetus, will respond to a certain stimulus. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the FSS-test. METHODS A retrospective observational study carried out Copenhagen University Hospital, Herlev, Denmark. Laboring women with singleton pregnancies in cephalic presentation after gestation week 33 and indication for fetal blood sampling (FBS) were eligible for inclusion. The FSS-test was classified as positive when an acceleration was absent at the time of FBS and negative when an acceleration was present. Lactate in scalp blood was measured by the point-of-care device LactatePro™ and pH in artery umbilical cord blood by the stationary blood gas analyzer ABL800. Lactate level < 4.2 mmol/L in scalp blood and arterial cord pH > 7.1 were cut-offs for normality. RESULTS Three hundred eighty-five women were included. The cohort was divided by the FBS-to-delivery time: Group 1 (n = 128) ≤ 20 min, Group 2 (n = 117) 21-59 min and Group 3 (n = 140) ≥ 60 min. The proportion of FSS-positive tests differed significantly between the groups (p < 0.000). In Group 1 the sensitivity, specificity and likelihoods for scalp lactate ≥4.2 mmol/L were 81.5 (95% CI 67-90.1), 13.3 18.5 (95% CI 5.9-24.6), LHR+ 0.94 (95% CI 0.8-1.1) and LHR - 1.4 (95% CI 0.6-3.2) and for umbilical artery pH ≤ 7.10 the values were 82.6% (95% CI 61.2-95.1), 16% (95% CI 9.4-24.7), 1.0 (95% CI 0.8-1.2) and 1.1 (95% CI 0.4-3) respectively. Regardless of the FBS-to-delivery time the LHR+ for lactate ≥4.2 mmol/L increased to 1.38 (95% CI 1.2-1.6). CONCLUSION The effectiveness of scalp stimulation test was poor for both ruling in and out fetal hypoxia during labor. Absence of a provoked acceleration seems to be a normal phenomenon in the second stage of labor.
