Bio-based antibacterial food packaging films and coatings containing cinnamaldehyde: A review

As a typical bioactive compound from the bark and leaves of the trees of the genus Cinnamomum, cinnamaldehyde (CIN) is natural and safe. Its excellent antibacterial activity against various foodborne microorganisms is growingly regarded as a promising additive for improving and enhancing the properties of bio-based packaging films/coatings. This review systematically summarized the bio-based food packaging films/coatings containing CIN developed recently. The effects of CIN incorporation on physical and chemical properties of the antibacterial food packaging films/coatings, including thickness, color index, transparency, water content, water solubility, water contact angle, mechanical performances, water barrier performances, and antibacterial performances, were discussed. Simultaneously, this work also concluded that an explanation of the antibacterial mechanism of CIN and preparation methods of bio-based packaging films/coatings containing CIN/CIN carriers. Notably, the incorporation of CIN into the films/coatings could enhance their antibacterial performance extend the shelf-life of various foods, such as fish, meats, vegetables, fruits, and other perishable food, while improving their physical and chemical properties. Although incorporating CIN into food packaging films/coatings has been extensively studied, long-term follow-up research on the human safety of active food packaging films/coatings containing CIN needs to be carried out.

Characterization and application of porous polylactic acid films prepared by nonsolvent-induced phase separation method

Nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method was employed to prepare polylactic acid (PLA) films using N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as a nonsolvent. The morphology and structure of PLA films were characterized, and the application of the films in pork preservation was investigated. When 10 wt% NMP was added, film with uniform porous structures was obtained. The crystalline and Fourier-transform infrared spectra analyses indicated that the addition of NMP during the preparation of PLA films caused their crystalline properties to change, but had no effect on their composition. However, the 10 wt% NMP/PLA film had improved thermal stability, water vapor transmission and oxygen permeability. The results on the changes in pH, total volatile basic nitrogen content and total viable counts of pork during refrigerated storage indicated that the 10 wt% NMP/PLA film could more effectively extend the shelf life of pork than polyethylene film. This work demonstrates the potential of the porous PLA film in pork packaging.

Can Sustainable Packaging Help to Reduce Food Waste? A Status Quo Focusing Plant-Derived Polymers and Additives

The promotion of sustainable packaging is part of the European Green Deal and plays a key role in the EU’s social and political strategy. One option is the use of renewable resources and biomass waste as raw materials for polymer production. Lignocellulose biomass from annual and perennial industrial crops and agricultural residues are a major source of polysaccharides, proteins, and lignin and can also be used to obtain plant-based extracts and essential oils. Therefore, these biomasses are considered as potential substitute for fossil-based resources. Here, the status quo of bio-based polymers is discussed and evaluated in terms of properties related to packaging applications such as gas and water vapor permeability as well as mechanical properties. So far, their practical use is still restricted due to lower performance in fundamental packaging functions that directly influence food quality and safety, the length of shelf life, and thus the amount of food waste. Besides bio-based polymers, this review focuses on plant extracts as active packaging agents. Incorporating extracts of herbs, flowers, trees, and their fruits is inevitable to achieve desired material properties that are capable to prolong the food shelf life. Finally, the adoption potential of packaging based on polymers from renewable resources is discussed from a bioeconomy perspective.

Edible Films and Coatings as Food-Quality Preservers: An Overview

Food preservation technologies are currently facing important challenges at extending the shelf-life of perishable food products (e.g., meat, fish, milk, eggs, and many raw fruits and vegetables) that help to meet the daily nutrient requirement demand. In addition, food preservation has gone beyond only preservation; the current techniques are focused on the fulfillment of two additional objectives, the suitability of the used processes and generation of environmentally friendly products with non-presence of any side effect on health. Moreover, they are also looking for additional nutritional properties. One of these preservation protocols deals with the use of edible films and coatings. Therefore, this review shows an overview of synthetic materials (e.g., glass, aluminum, plastic, and paperboard), as well as the regulations that limit their application in food packaging. Further, this review releases the current-state-of-the-art of the use of films and edible coatings as an alternative to conventional packaging, providing the main features that these biodegradable packaging should meet towards specific uses for the conservation and improvement of various food products. Herein, particular attention has been paid to the main used components (e.g., biopolymers, additives, bioactive, and probiotic components), manufacturing methods (for edible films or coatings) and their application to specific products. In addition, an outlook of the application of edible films and coatings as quality indicators of perishable products is shown.

Biodegradable Antimicrobial Food Packaging: Trends and Perspectives

This review presents a perspective on the research trends and solutions from recent years in the domain of antimicrobial packaging materials. The antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant activities can be induced by the main polymer used for packaging or by addition of various components from natural agents (bacteriocins, essential oils, natural extracts, etc.) to synthetic agents, both organic and inorganic (Ag, ZnO, TiO2 nanoparticles, synthetic antibiotics etc.). The general trend for the packaging evolution is from the inert and polluting plastic waste to the antimicrobial active, biodegradable or edible, biopolymer film packaging. Like in many domains this transition is an evolution rather than a revolution, and changes are coming in small steps. Changing the public perception and industry focus on the antimicrobial packaging solutions will enhance the shelf life and provide healthier food, thus diminishing the waste of agricultural resources, but will also reduce the plastic pollution generated by humankind as most new polymers used for packaging are from renewable sources and are biodegradable. Polysaccharides (like chitosan, cellulose and derivatives, starch etc.), lipids and proteins (from vegetal or animal origin), and some other specific biopolymers (like polylactic acid or polyvinyl alcohol) have been used as single component or in blends to obtain antimicrobial packaging materials. Where the package's antimicrobial and antioxidant activities need a larger spectrum or a boost, certain active substances are embedded, encapsulated, coated, grafted into or onto the polymeric film. This review tries to cover the latest updates on the antimicrobial packaging, edible or not, using as support traditional and new polymers, with emphasis on natural compounds.
