Analysis of Triphenylmethane Dye Residues and their Leuco-Forms in Frozen Fish by LC-MS/MS, Fish Microbial Quality, and Effect of Immersion in Whole Milk on Dye Removal

Determination of restricted dyes in textile raw material solid wastes by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

A rapid and highly sensitive method for the quantification of 34 restricted dyes (including acid, basic, disperse, direct, and azo dyes) in solid textile raw material wastes was developed by employing ultrasonic extraction coupled with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(UHPLC-MS/MS). More specifically, the proposed method employed methanol as the extraction solvent, while the mobile phases consisted of acetonitrile and 10 mmol/L ammonium acetate + 0.05% ammonia. A good linearity was achieved over the concentration range of 0.01-200 ng/mL with correlation coefficients (R) between 0.991-0.999, limits of detection (LODs) of 0.25-40.0 µg/kg (S/N = 3) and limits of quantification (LOQs) of 0.84-133.4 µg/kg (S/N = 10). 34 dyes were recovered at three levels ranging from 84.5 to 106.9% with relative standard deviation (RSDs) ranging from 0.59% to 10.61%. Further, the method was applied for the accurate analysis of 32 counts of cotton yarn, waste cotton, and printed fabrics within 15 min. The dyestuffs accurately quantified by this rapid chromatographic procedure covered a wide range of carcinogenic and allergenic dyestuffs listed in the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 (version 02.2023) colourants. The ultrasound technique combined with the ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method proposed in this work is thus suitable for the rapid screening, confirmation, and quantitative detection of industrial synthetic dyes within solid waste originating from textile raw materials.

Versatile flexible SERS substrate for in situ detection of contaminants in water and fruits based on Ag NPs decorated wrinkled PDMS film

Flexible surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate has attracted great attention due to its convenient sampling and on-site monitoring capability. However, it is still challenging to fabricate a versatile flexible SERS substrate, which can be used for in situ detection of analytes either in water or on irregular solid surfaces. Here, we report a flexible and transparent SERS substrate based on a wrinkled polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film obtained by transferring corrugated structures on the aluminium/polystyrene bilayer film, onto which silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) are deposited by thermal evaporation. The as-fabricated SERS substrate exhibits a high enhancement factor (∼1.19×10⁵), good signal uniformity (RSD of 6.27%), and excellent batch-to-batch reproducibility (RSD of 7.3%) for rhodamine 6 G. In addition, the Ag NPs@W-PDMS film can maintain high detection sensitivity even after mechanical deformations of bending or torsion for 100 cycles. More importantly, being flexible, transparent, and light, the Ag NPs@W-PDMS film can both float on the water surface and conformally contact with the curved surface for in situ detection. The malachite green in aqueous environment and on apple peel can be easily detected down to 10^-6 M with a portable Raman spectrometer. Therefore, it is expected that such a versatile flexible SERS substrate has great potential in on-site, in situ contaminant monitoring for realistic applications.

Analysis of trace malachite green, crystal violet, and their metabolites in zebrafish by surface-coated probe nanoelectrospray ionization mass spectrometry

Malachite green (MG) and crystal violet (CV) are the typical triphenylmethane dyes, which are recalcitrant molecules exerting mutagenic and carcinogenic effects on living organisms. Characterization of the residues of MG, CV, and their metabolites in biological organisms is of importance, especially for in vivo and in situ characterization. In this study, a method for determination of trace MG, CV, and their leuco metabolites in zebrafish by surface-coated probe nanoelectrospray ionization mass spectrometry (SCP-nanoESI-MS) was developed. A microscale solid-phase microextraction (SPME) probe was developed and used for extraction and enrichment of trace MG, CV, and their leuco metabolites in zebrafish after exposure. After that, the loaded SPME probe was directly employed for nanoESI-MS analysis under ambient and open-air conditions. Under the optimum conditions, the method demonstrated good linearity, with correlation coefficient values (r²) no less than 0.9925. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.014-0.023 ng mL^-1 and 0.046-0.077 ng mL^-1, respectively. By using the proposed method, the bioaccumulation of MG and CV in zebrafish was investigated, and the distribution of MG, CV, and their leuco metabolites in different organs of zebrafish was studied. MG, CV, and their leuco metabolites were all found in zebrafish tissues including brain, muscle, heart, and kidney after exposure, with highest concentration in intestine followed in ovary.
