Religion, coping and outcome in out-patients with depression or diabetes mellitus

The Association Between Religious Belief and Postoperative Psychological Status and Quality of Life of Parents of Children with Congenital Heart Disease: A Single Center Experience in Southeast China

This study aimed to investigate the association of religious belief on the postoperative psychological status and quality of life of parents of children with congenital heart disease (CHD). This was a cross-sectional study conducted at a provincial children's hospital in Fujian Province, China. Parents of postoperative children with CHD in the early postoperative period were included in this study between January 2020 and September 2020. The parents were divided into a religious belief group (n = 39) and a nonreligious belief group (n = 42) depending on whether they had religious beliefs. The Religious Coping Questionnaire, WHOQOL-BREF scale, Self-rating depression scale (SDS), and Self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) were used to evaluate psychological status and quality of life. The results showed that the SDS and SAS scores in the religious belief group were significantly lower than those in the nonreligious belief group (P = 0.012 and P = 0.003, respectively). The WHOQOL-BREF scale results showed that the religious belief group's score was significantly higher than those in the nonreligious belief group on the subscale scores of physiology, psychology, social relations, and environment on the WHOQOL-BREF. The total score of quality of life in the religious belief group was significantly higher than that in the nonreligious belief group. Religious belief was associated with lower SDS score (β = - 0.324, P = 0.005) and SAS score (β = - 0.245, P = 0.026), while religious belief was positively correlated with the score of WHOQOL-BREF (β = 0.506, P < 0.001). In this study, we concluded that comparing to those with no religious beliefs, parents with religious belief experienced more positive emotions and higher quality of life when taking care of children in the early postoperative period after congenital heart surgery.

Religious Coping and Mental Adjustment to Cancer Among Polish Adolescents

Adults suffering from chronic illnesses are more likely to look to God for support (positive religious coping; PRC) than to fight against God (negative religious coping; NRC). What about when cancer occurs during adolescence-a period of questioning the worldview and values, and at the same time searching for the sacred? Our study aimed to establish the relationships between PRC, NRC, and mental adjustment to cancer among youth and determine support's role in these relationships. The study was conducted in Poland and included 88 adolescent cancer patients who completed the Brief RCOPE and the Mini-MAC. Additionally, general well-being and support were assessed. We found that PRC was positively related to constructive adjustment style (CAS), whereas NCR was related to destructive adjustment style (DAS). Adolescents with cancer were higher in PRC than in NRC and were higher in CAS than in DAS. In young women, CAS was higher than in men. Finally, at a level of received support rated as very high, PRC promoted fighting spirit and well-being.

Positive Religious Coping and Associated Factors Among Participants with Severe Mental Illness Attending Felege Hiwot Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, 2021

Background

Religion has been reported to be the most widely used coping resource in stressful conditions including physical and mental illnesses. Different studies consistently find that positive religious coping is associated with a reduced level of severe mental illness such as depression. Despite its high prevalence and being a significant coping mechanism for persons with severe mental illness, there are no published studies on positive religious coping in Ethiopia.

Objective

To assess the prevalence of positive religious coping and associated factors among people with severe mental illness attending outpatient service at Felege Hiwot Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Bahir Dar, northwest Ethiopia, 2021.

Methods

A cross-sectional institution-based study was conducted and systematic random sampling was applied to select participants. Data were collected through a face-to-face interview. The collected data were entered into EpiData version 3.1 and exported to SPSS version 20 for processing and analysis. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify independent factors associated with religious coping. P-value <0.05 was declared a statistically significant association with a 95% confidence interval.

Results

The prevalence of positive religious coping among severe mental illness was 72.4% (95% CI= 68.2, 76.4). Having no comorbid medical illness, good quality of life, good medication adherence, and mild subjective severity scale were associated with positive religious coping.

Conclusion

The magnitude of positive religious coping among severe mental illness was relatively high. Not having a comorbid medical illness, good medication adherence, good quality of life, and mild subjective severity scale were factors associated with it. Patients report different factors that affect practicing positive religious coping factors. In the other direction, positive religious coping was reported to contribute to symptom alleviating and increasing a sense of well-being.

Pathways to health outcomes after cancer diagnosis: A systematic review of cancer survivorship in Nigeria

OBJECTIVE

With advancements in medicine and technology, more people are surviving cancers. However, cancer mortality in Nigeria remains high. The yearly estimate is 72,000 cancer-related deaths, making cancer one of the leading causes of death in Nigeria. The current study aimed to identify and synthesize factors that facilitate or hinder cancer survivorship in Nigeria and add to our understanding of the patterns of cancer survivorship in LMICs, such as Nigeria.

METHOD

Following preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines, a systematic review was conducted across PubMed, Cochrane, and Scopus databases. We identified 31 peer-reviewed studies that examined cancer treatment, management, care, and survivorship in Nigeria.

RESULTS

Eight themes emerged from 31 peer-reviewed studies that examined the factors that facilitate or hinder cancer survivorship among Nigerians. They include themes such as self-care and management, treatment options, availability of pseudo-doctors/pharmacists, and the desire to live. The themes were further grouped into three overarching themes: psychosocial, economic, and health care.

CONCLUSION

Cancer survivors in Nigeria face many unique experiences that impact their health outcomes and chances of survivorship. Therefore, understanding cancer survivorship in Nigeria must involve studies on diagnosis, treatment, remission, surveillance, after-cancer care, and end-of-life. With enhanced support, cancer survivors will have improved health, thereby reducing the cancer mortality rate in Nigeria.

Improving the quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS: A cross-sectional study of the role of religion

Background

Previous studies have found religion as a useful tool in coping with chronic medical conditions including HIV/AIDS. Aim: This study assessed how religiosity and religious coping are associated with quality of life (QOL) among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).

Patients and Methods

This was a cross-sectional study of 140 HIV clinic attendees of a Nigerian tertiary health facility. Religiosity, religious coping and QOL were measured with religious orientation scale-revised (ROS-R), Brief Religious Coping (Brief RCOPE) and World Health Organization Quality of Life-Bref (WHOQOL-BREF), respectively. Correlation analysis assessed the relationship between ROS-R, Brief RCOPE and WHOQOL-BREF.

Results

: Intrinsic religiosity (IR) scores had a moderate positive correlation with psychological health domain of QOL (r = 0.4, N = 140, and P 0.001), and a weak positive correlation with physical health domain of QOL (r = 0.2, N = 140, and P 0.05). Extrinsic religiosity (ER) scores moderately correlated positively with the psychological health domain of QOL (r = 0.03, N = 140, and P 0.002), but weakly correlated positively with the physical health domain (r = 0.2, N = 140, and P 0.02). Positive religious coping (PRC) scores moderately correlated positively with the psychological health domain (r = 0.03, N = 140, and P 0.05) and weakly correlated positively with physical health domain of QOL (r = 0.2, N = 140, and P 0.02). Extrinsic religiosity social (ERS) scores had a moderate positive correlation with the social relationships domain (r = 0.4, N = 140, P 0.001).

Conclusion

Increased ER, IR orientations and Positive Religious Coping appear to improve the psychological and physical health domains ofQOL QOL Therefore, religiosity should be encouraged among PLWHA to improve QOL.

Life Strain, Negative Emotions, and Religious Involvement in Contemporary China

Explaining religious growth in China remains a challenge for social scientists. Research on Western nations establishes religion as a powerful resource for coping with life strain. However, China's sociopolitical context, which often treats religion as deviant, is thought to function as a deterrent to conversion. When individuals experience life strain, they respond with negative emotions. Because those who experience strain may turn to non-traditional and deviant activities, we argue that they will be less deterred by China's negative framing of religion when seeking resources for coping. Applying lagged dependent variable models to the 2012-2014 China Family Panel Study, we find that life strain is associated with increases in religious affiliation, service attendance, and salience. Further analyses show that negative emotions mediate the effects of life strain on religiosity. Our study makes a substantial contribution to multiple bodies of literature by applying a theory of deviance to the study of religion, modernization, and mental health.

Potential influences of religiosity and religious coping strategies on people with diabetes

Diabetes is a significant health issue that threatens patients’ overall wellbeing and quality of life. Critical public health concerns center on creating the best approach for diabetes management. Patients and caregivers have different approaches to diabetes management; however, this and the associated physiological, physical and mental health issues remain challenging. This review explores the potential influences of religiosity and religious coping strategies on people with diabetes. This study used a literature review approach to investigate how religiosity and religious coping strategies can influence the effective management of diabetes among patients. Based on the literature search, the researchers were able to identify and cite published papers that were analyzed using the descriptive-narrative analysis. An important goal of the descriptive-narrative analysis was to provide descriptions of the selected literature and take implications from the literature. The results of studies reviewed show some religious coping strategies for managing chronic diseases such as diabetes. The studies did establish a relationship between religiosity and diabetes management and suggest that religious coping strategies could positively impact the management of diabetes; however, they reported some adverse effects. Hence, we propose a pathway for the development of religion-oriented interventions and support framework for the management of diabetes.

Coping strategies and their association with diabetes specific distress, depression and diabetes self-care among people living with diabetes in Zambia

OBJECTIVES

Utilising coping strategies to reduce and manage the intensity of negative and distressing emotions caused by diabetes is essential. However, little is known about the use of coping strategies among people living with diabetes in Sub-Saharan African countries like Zambia. This study investigates coping strategies used by people with diabetes in Zambia and how these are associated with diabetes-specific emotional distress, depression and diabetes self-care.

METHODS

Cross-sectional data from 157 people with diabetes aged between 12 and 68 years were collected. Of the 157, 59% were people with type 1 diabetes and 37% with type 2 diabetes. About 4% had missing information in their record but had either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Coping styles were measured using the Brief Version of the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced (Brief COPE), diabetes specific-distress using the Problem Areas in Diabetes, depression using the Major Depression Inventory and self-care using the Diabetes Self-Care scale.

RESULTS

Data showed that adaptive coping strategies such as religious coping, acceptance among others, were the most frequently used coping strategies among Zambian individuals with diabetes. Maladaptive coping strategies e.g., self-blame and self-distraction were related to increased diabetes specific-distress and depression. Emotional support was related to better diabetes self-care, while self-blame was related to poor diabetes self-care.

CONCLUSION

There is need to help individuals with diabetes identify adaptive strategies that work best for them in order to improve their quality of life.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus patients' lived experience at a tertiary hospital in Ekiti State, Nigeria

Diabetes mellitus is a complex and chronic metabolic disorder that is associated with multiple complications and disabilities. This contributes to increased mortality and poor quality of life among affected individuals. The study explored the lived experience of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at a Teaching Hospital in Ekiti State, Nigeria. A mixed method of qualitative and quantitative design was adopted. For the quantitative aspect, a convenience sampling technique was employed while the instrument used was an adapted questionnaire. For the qualitative aspect, focus-group discussion involving twenty-four participants was conducted, and the sample size was determined by data saturation. Qualitative data was analyzed using thematic transcription. Findings revealed that 55.6% of the participants were females while 63.5% had tertiary education. Majority (18 of 24) of the respondents experienced body weakness, frequent urination and excessive thirst when diagnosed of diabetes mellitus and later experienced occasional body weakness, burning sensation, tingling and numbness of the feet, fatigue, loss of libido, and occasional visual disturbance. Two-third of the participants reported being indifferent when they were informed about their condition. However, majority of the participants perceived that the cause of diabetes mellitus was heredity. More than two-third of the participants did not experience reduction in their normal daily activities but rather experienced occasional emotional disturbances, anxiety and challenges with self-management of diabetes and this was associated with maintaining a normo-glycemic state due to the financial implications of drugs and dietary modifications.

The Effect of Spirituality on the Subjective Recovery of Psychiatric Patients

Spiritual well-being is among the factors that affect subjective recovery. This study aimed to explore the relationship between subjective recovery and spiritual well-being among psychiatric patients and to identify the factors that affected their subjective recovery. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with 96 patients admitted to the psychiatry clinic of a hospital. It was found that the patients had high subjective recovery assessment levels and medium levels of spiritual well-being. There was a positive association between the patients' subjective recovery assessments and their spiritual well-being, and spiritual well-being was a significant predictor of the subjective recovery level. It is recommended that mental health professionals focus on serving patients through a holistic healthcare approach and enhancing patients' subjective recovery levels through applications that will strengthen the spiritual dimension.

Religiosity and Severity of Symptoms in Croatian Patients With Major Depressive Disorder or Schizophrenia

We examined and compared the relationship between religiosity and symptom severity in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) rated by the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale) and schizophrenia (rated by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale). The Duke University Religion Index, the Santa Clara Strength of Religious Faith (SCSORF) questionnaire, and the Brief Religious Coping scale scores were similar between patients with MDD (n = 50) and patients with schizophrenia (n = 50). In patients with MDD, higher organizational religious activity (ORA) (estimate = 2.28, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.37-4.19; p = 0.020) and higher negative religious coping (estimate = 0.43, 95% CI = 0.03-0.84; p = 0.037) were independently associated with more severe symptoms. In patients with schizophrenia, higher ORA was associated with lower negative symptoms (estimate = -1.99, 95% CI = -3.94 to -0.03; p = 0.046). Higher SCSORF was associated with lower ORA in both patient subsets, and thus indirectly with milder symptoms in patients with MDD and with more severe negative symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. The relationship between religiosity and symptom severity apparently differs in patients with MDD and those with schizophrenia.

Coping behaviors and depressive status in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus

OBJECTIVE

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with a high prevalence of depression, which is influenced by personality traits and coping style. However, these psychological factors have not been well studied in individuals with T2DM. The association between coping behaviors and the reported levels of depressive symptoms was examined in individuals with T2DM.

METHODS

The subjects were 435 T2DM patients (mean age 63.1 ± 12.6 years). Depressive status, personality traits and coping behaviors were assessed using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and the Brief Scale for Coping Profile (BSCP). Lifestyle factors and glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels in the patients were also included in the analyses.

RESULTS

Among the 435 subjects with T2DM, 130 (29.9%) exhibited possible depression, and 68 (15.6%) displayed probable depression. After adjustment for confounders, logistic and multiple regression analyses revealed that certain coping profile scores, such as Changing one's point of view, Emotional expression involving others and Avoidance and suppression, were consistently and significantly associated with the presence and severity of depression. No relationship was found between depression and HbA1c.

CONCLUSION

These findings indicate that Maladaptive emotion-focused coping strategies, such as Emotional expression involving others and Avoidance and suppression, are protective factors and that Adaptive emotion-focused coping, such as Changing one's point of view, is a risk factor for depression in T2DM patients. Psychological intervention focusing on the coping profile may reduce depressive symptoms. Additional studies are needed to examine the relationships between psychological factors and depressive symptoms using a longitudinal study design.

The relationship between defense mechanisms and religious coping using a new two-factor solution for the Defense Style Questionnaire-40

This study examined the factor structure of the Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ-40) and explored the relationships between defense mechanisms and religious coping in a diverse sample of 380 college students. In contrast with the three-factor model of defenses proposed by the developers of the DSQ-40, principal axis factoring yielded two internally consistent components: adaptive and maladaptive defense styles. Endorsement of adaptive defenses was positively correlated with the use of positive religious coping strategies and negatively correlated with negative religious coping. Maladaptive defenses were associated with the endorsement of negative religious coping strategies. Clinical implications of these findings are discussed and recommendations are made for future use of the DSQ-40.

Positive and Negative Religious Coping Styles as Prospective Predictors of Well-Being in African Americans

Research on religious coping has proliferated in recent years, but many key questions remain, including the independent effects of positive and negative religious coping styles on well-being over time. Further, little research on religious coping styles has been conducted with African Americans in spite of their documented importance in this population. The present study examined the independent prospective effects on well-being of positive and negative religious coping styles over the subsequent 2.5 years in a national sample of African American community-dwelling adults. Well-being indicators included depressive symptoms and positive and negative affect as well as self-esteem and meaning in life. Results indicated that when considering positive and negative religious coping styles together, baseline positive religious coping consistently and positively predicted the well-being indicators 2.5 years later, while negative religious coping consistently and negatively predicted the well-being indicators 2.5 years later. These effects remained when examining change in well-being levels over time, although they attenuated in magnitude. Finally, negative religious coping more strongly predicted the negative aspects of well-being (e.g., depressive symptoms, negative affect) 2.5 years later than did positive religious coping, an effect that also remained but was attenuated when controlling for baseline levels of well-being. These results highlight the nuanced relationships between both positive and negative religious coping styles and positive and negative aspects of well-being over time among African Americans. Future research might usefully examine how to minimize negative effects and capitalize on the salutary effects of positive religious coping.

Can Social Integration and Social Support Help to Explain Racial Disparities in Health Care Utilization Among Men with Diabetes?

OBJECTIVE

Discovering the mechanisms through which racial and ethnic background influence health is critical to better understanding racial disparities in health among men with a diabetes diagnosis. The present study examines whether social support and social integration mediate or buffer the relationship between race and health care utilization among U.S. men.

METHOD

This study used a sub-sample from the 2001 National Health Interview Survey that included Latino, African American, non-Latino White men living with self-reported diabetes (n = 7,148).

RESULTS

Findings revealed that African American men with high levels of social integration were less likely to forego care (OR = 0.234, [CI = 0.053,1.045]). Also, African American men who did not attend church had higher odds of foregoing care (OR = 0.222, [CI = 0.110,0.448]).

CONCLUSIONS

The effect of social networks operate differently for African American men with diabetes compared to non-Latino white men. Identifying racial differences in the influence of social networks on health will assist in developing interventions that may help to decrease gender and race gaps in health for men with diabetes.

Religious Practices and Self-Care in Iranian Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

This study aimed to examine the relationship between religious practices and self-care of patients with type 2 diabetes. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted on 154 diabetic patients who were referred to two general teaching hospitals in Qom City (Iran). Data were collected using demographic questionnaire, private and public religious practices, and summary of diabetes self-care activities questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and statistical tests including independent t test, and Pearson correlation coefficient. Significant positive correlations were observed between religious practices and self-care activities in diabetic patients (p < 0.05). Significant positive correlations were also found between some religious practices and self-care activities subscales (p < 0.05). Healthcare providers should be aware of the role that religion plays in the lives of diabetic patients and be able to take religious factors into account when developing care plans. Doing so will enhance a more patient-centered approach and thereby support patients in their role as self-care decision-makers.

Impact of Demographic, Socioeconomic, and Psychological Factors on Glycemic Self-Management in Adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is reported as one of the most complex chronic diseases worldwide. In the United States, Type 2 DM (T2DM) is the seventh leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Individuals with diabetes require lifelong personal care to reduce the possibility of developing long-term complications. A good knowledge of diabetes risk factors, including obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, family history of DM, and sedentary lifestyle, play an essential role in prevention and treatment. Also, sociodemographic, economic, psychological, and environmental factors are directly and indirectly associated with diabetes control and health outcomes. Our review intends to analyze the interaction between demographics, knowledge, environment, and other diabetes-related factors based on an extended literature search, and to provide insight for improving glycemic control and reducing the incidence of chronic complications.
