Ecophysiological traits of invasive alien Acacia cyclops compared to co-occuring native species in Strandveld vegetation of the Cape Floristic Region

Chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics and H2O2 contents of Chinese tallow tree are dependent on population origin, nutrients and salinity

Plants from invasive populations often have higher growth rates than conspecifics from native populations due to better environmental adaptability. However, the roles of improved chlorophyll fluorescence or antioxidant defenses in helping them to grow better under adverse situations are insufficient, even though this is a key physiological question for elucidating mechanisms of plant invasion. Here, we conducted experiments with eight native (China) and eight introduced (USA) populations of Chinese tallow tree (Triadica sebifera). We tested how salinity, nutrients (overall amount or N:P in two separate experiments) and their interaction affected T. sebifera aboveground biomass, leaf area, chlorophyll fluorescence and antioxidant defenses. Plants from introduced populations were larger than those from native populations, but salinity and nutrient shortage (low nutrients or high N:P) reduced this advantage, possibly reflecting differences in chlorophyll fluorescence based on their higher PSII maximum photochemical efficiency (F v/F m) and PSI maximum photo-oxidizable P700 in higher nutrient conditions. Native population plants had lower F v/F m with saline. Except in high nutrients/N:P with salinity, introduced population plants had lower electron transfer rate and photochemical quantum yield. There were no differences in antioxidant defenses between introduced and native populations except accumulation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which was lower for introduced populations. Low nutrients and higher N:P or salinity increased total antioxidant capacity and H2O2. Our results indicate that nutrients and salinity induce differences in H2O2 contents and chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics between introduced and native populations of an invasive plant, illuminating adaptive mechanisms using photosynthetic physiological descriptors in order to predict invasions.

Different sets of traits determine transition of alien species along the invasion continuum

Invasive alien species are currently considered as one of the dominant drivers of global environmental change. Till now, the majority of studies have focused on single or a few traits of alien species that facilitate their invasion. Also inclusion of all the traits which determine the transition of aliens along the different stages of invasion continuum (casual, naturalised and invasive) has remained largely overlooked. In this study, we collected a comprehensive trait dataset on 144 alien plant species of Kashmir Himalaya - a global biodiversity hotspot region. To test which traits of alien species, individually or in combination along with anthropogenic factors, determine their transition along the invasion continuum, we employed chi-square tests, boosted regression trees and phylogenetic methods. We found the perennial life span, longer residence time, greater number of introduced regions, and better seed dispersal mechanism were critical in determining the transition from casual to naturalised. The herbaceous growth form, therophyte Raunkiaer life-form, annual life span, achene fruit, longer residence time and broader introduced range were the species' traits determining transition from naturalised to invasive. Aliens introduced as ornamentals have more propensity to become naturalised; whereas aliens introduced unintentionally show overrepresentation at the invasive stage. Phylogeny alone showed mixed results indicating both clustering and dispersion; however, in combination with other traits, it plays a significant role in determining the stage of invasion. Overall, our study disentangles the individual and interactive roles of multiple traits that determine the transition of alien species' along the invasion continuum. Further, we foresee the potential applicability of our findings in designing robust invasion risk analysis protocols and stage-specific invasion management strategies in this Himalayan region, with learnings for elsewhere in the world.

Potential distribution of selected invasive alien plants under current and future climate change scenarios in South Africa

Invasive alien plants are one of the main causes for the decline of native biodiversity worldwide. Hence, it is crucial to understand the dynamics of invasive plants in the context of a changing climate. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the potential distribution of two major invasive alien plants, Prosopis spp and Acacia mearnsii, under current and future climate change scenarios across South Africa. The maximum entropy (MaxEnt) model was used with species occurrence data and bioclimatic variables. The Species occurrence data was obtained from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), while the bioclimatic variables were downloaded from the WorldClim database. The model evaluation metrics for training and test samples were the area under curve (AUC) of 0.76 and 0.77 for Prosopis spp, and 0.91 and 0.89 for A. mearnsii, respectively. It showed that MaxEnt performed well in mapping the distribution of both species. Model results indicated that the near-current potential distribution of Prosopis spp and A. mearnsii in South Africa is significant (93.8% and 9.7% of the total land area, respectively). With the projected climate, Prosopis spp showed an inconsistent result across the General Circulation Models (GCMs), projection times and climate change scenarios. However, with respect to the current potential distribution, the geographical ranges of A. mearnsii will significantly contract (by about 75%) due to climate change. Therefore, it is imperative that policy makers, environmental managers and other stakeholders implement integrated management and control strategies to restrict the distribution of Prosopis spp.
