Asthma and allergies correlate with mental health problems in preschool children

Neuropsychiatric symptoms have long been acknowledged as a common comorbidity for individuals with allergic diseases. The proposed mechanisms for this relationship vary by disease and patient population and may include neuroinflammation and/or the consequent social implications of disease symptoms and management. We review connections between mental health and allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, asthma, vocal cord dysfunction, urticaria, and food allergy. Many uncertainties remain and warrant further research, particularly with regard to how medications interact with pathophysiologic mechanisms of allergic disease in the neuroimmune axis. Proactive screening for mental health challenges, using tools such as the Patient Health Questionnaire and Generalized Anxiety Disorder screening instruments among others, can aid clinicians in identifying patients who may need further psychiatric evaluation and support. Although convenient, symptom screening tools are limited by variable sensitivity and specificity and therefore require healthcare professionals to remain vigilant for other mental health "red flags." Ultimately, understanding the connection between allergic disease and mental health empowers clinicians to both anticipate and serve the diverse physical and mental health needs of their patient populations.

Two meta-analyses of the association between atopic diseases and core symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

Studies in the field of neuroscience and psychology have hypothesized that a causal association exists between atopic diseases and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Previous systematic reviews and meta-analyses have reported a higher risk of ADHD in children with atopic diseases; however, the relationship between ADHD symptoms and atopic diseases remains unclear. We systematically reviewed observational cross-sectional and longitudinal studies to investigate the relationship between atopic diseases and ADHD symptom severity (hyperactivity/impulsivity and inattention). The majority of studies showed a statistically significant association between atopic diseases and both ADHD symptoms, with substantial heterogeneity in the outcome of hyperactivity/impulsivity. Remarkably decreased heterogeneity and statistical significance were observed in the second meta-analysis of ADHD-related behavior symptoms in atopic patients without ADHD. Our study indicated that atopic diseases not only associated with ADHD but also ADHD symptoms severity. This association was even observed in children with subthreshold ADHD, indicating that atopic diseases may play a role in the spectrum of ADHD symptom severity. Psychological and Sociocultural Determinants in Childhood Asthma Disease: Impact on Quality of Life

Asthma is the most common chronic disease in childhood. The presence of this pathology in children leads to the appearance of different alterations (physical, psychological, social, etc.). Due to their high influence, the aim of this study is to understand these psychological and sociocultural determinants and their impact on the quality of life of asthmatic children. In order to determine the influence of these determinants on quality of life, a narrative review of 48 articles collected in different databases was carried out. Emotions are the most powerful precursor to producing an asthmatic attack. Anxiety and depression are the pathologies that appear frequently associated with childhood asthma, together with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. In addition, the personality of these children seems to be characterized by shyness and impulsivity, although exceptionally it has been associated with psychopathic behaviors, aggressiveness, and cases of psychosis. School performance is impaired and bullying occurs more frequently. Likewise, dysfunctional family relationships and lower socioeconomic status have a negative impact on the severity and management of asthma. In short, the quality of life of asthmatic children is lower due to the presence of the aforementioned psychological and sociocultural determinants.

Quality of Life of Children with Allergic Disease: The effect of Depression and Anxiety of Children and Their Mothers

Introduction: In comparison with the general population, several studies have reported higher anxiety and depression rates not only in children with allergic diseases but also in their parents. We aimed to evaluate the mental health of children and their mothers affecting quality of life (QoL) in children with allergic diseases, and to compare anxiety and depression in these patients and their parents with the general population.Methods: One hundred and sixty-eight patients aged 8-18 years diagnosed with an allergic disease who visited our outpatient clinic and a control group of 61 children who did not have any chronic or allergic diseases were included in the study. Patients completed the Pediatric QoL Inventory, Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children, and Children's Depression Inventory, while mothers completed the General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Independent samples' t-test was used to compare children's QoL, trait anxiety, and depression scores and mothers' GAD-7 and PHQ-9 scores between the controlled/mild and uncontrolled/moderate-severe groups. The effects of age, gender, disease severity, maternal depression/anxiety, and children's depression/anxiety on QoL were analyzed with multivariate regression analyses.Results: QoL was lower in children with allergic diseases than healthy children, and although the mean QoL score was lower in the group with high disease severity, QoL in children with allergic diseases was not associated with disease severity but inversely related to anxiety/depression and maternal depression.Conclusions: As per the results, QoL is impaired in children with allergic diseases. Both anxiety/depression in the child and maternal depression may adversely affect QoL in these patients.
