Ecology, environment and evolutionary history influence genetic structure in five mammal species from the Italian Alps

Reanalysis on Phylogeographic Pattern of Sharpbelly Hemiculter leucisculus (Cyprinidae: Cultrinae) in China: A Review and the Implications for Conservation

Hemiculter leucisclus, as a widely distributed freshwater fish in China, provides an interesting model to explore the impact of drainage evolution and geologic history in the Pleistocene on diversification patterns. We collected the mitochondrial cytochrome b (cytb) gene and the recombination activating gene 2 (RAG2) from 1,070 individuals from 59 sampling locations. Phylogenetic and population genetic approaches were used to describe the phylogeographic pattern and to test how the geological and climatic factors on diversification. The results suggested that there existed four sublineages of the H. leucisclus across six river systems, among which two sublineages, showing strongly indigenous characteristics, are constrained to particular geographical regions in China. The molecular data and ancestral states demonstrated that the H. leucisclus possibly originated from the Pearl River basin during the later Pliocene. The phylogeographic pattern in H. leucisclus appears to have been driven by palaeoenvironmental perturbations rather than anthropogenic translocations. The geographically constrained sublineages A in the middle and lower Pearl River basin and sublineage B in the upper Yangtze River basin deserves special protection.

Repeated hybridization increased diversity in the door snail complex Charpentieria itala in the Southern Alps

The door snail species complex Charpentieria itala is widely distributed in the Southern Alps and subdivided into several morphologically differentiated subspecies. Thus, it can be used as a model group for understanding migration and differentiation processes in the Southern Alps. We generated genome-wide double digest Restriction Site Associated DNA (ddRAD) sequencing data for 166 specimens from 36 populations of the door snail Charpentieria itala and for 8 specimens of the other three Charpentieria species to reconstruct their evolutionary history and phylogeography. Phylogenetic and structure analyses based on the ddRAD data indicated that the repeated separation of the populations in western and eastern groups by the Garda glacier during the glacials was the process that most strongly shaped the population structure of C. itala. This process may also explain a similar phylogeographic boundary in many other southern Alpine animal and plant species. Our study revealed that some populations that resemble Charpentieria stenzii morphologically and ecologically, the 'stenzioid' subspecies, originated by a hybridization event with Charpentieria stenzii. A further hybridization event between stenzioid populations that survived the glacials in mountain refuges and non-stenzioid populations that probably came into contact with stenzioid populations as a result of climate warming during an interglacial resulted in the origin of a hybrid subspecies that is adapted to intermediate altitudes. Our study demonstrated that the origin of new differentiated taxa by hybridization, is more frequent than previously assumed.

Syntopic frogs reveal different patterns of interaction with the landscape: A comparative landscape genetic study of Pelophylax nigromaculatus and Fejervarya limnocharis from central China

Amphibians are often considered excellent environmental indicator species. Natural and man‐made landscape features are known to form effective genetic barriers to amphibian populations; however, amphibians with different characteristics may have different species–landscape interaction patterns. We conducted a comparative landscape genetic analysis of two closely related syntopic frog species from central China, Pelophylax nigromaculatus (PN) and Fejervarya limnocharis (FL). These two species differ in several key life history traits; PN has a larger body size and larger clutch size, and reaches sexual maturity later than FL. Microsatellite DNA data were collected and analyzed using conventional (F_ST, isolation by distance (IBD), AMOVA) and recently developed (Bayesian assignment test, isolation by resistance) landscape genetic methods. As predicted, a higher level of population structure in FL (F_ST′ = 0.401) than in PN (F_ST′ = 0.354) was detected, in addition to FL displaying strong IBD patterns (r = .861) unlike PN (r = .073). A general north–south break in FL populations was detected, consistent with the IBD pattern, while PN exhibited clustering of northern‐ and southern‐most populations, suggestive of altered dispersal patterns. Species‐specific resistant landscape features were also identified, with roads and land cover the main cause of resistance to FL, and elevation the main influence on PN. These different species–landscape interactions can be explained mostly by their life history traits, revealing that closely related and ecologically similar species have different responses to the same landscape features. Comparative landscape genetic studies are important in detecting such differences and refining generalizations about amphibians in monitoring environmental changes.
