Replacing discontinued Big Tech mobility reports: a penetration-based analysis

People mobility data sets played a role during the COVID-19 pandemic in assessing the impact of lockdown measures and correlating mobility with pandemic trends. Two global data sets were Apple's Mobility Trends Reports and Google's Community Mobility Reports. The former is no longer available online, while the latter is no longer updated since October 2022. Thus, new products are required. To establish a lower bound on data set penetration guaranteeing high adherence between new products and the Big Tech products, an independent mobility data set based on 3.8 million smartphone trajectories is analysed to compare its information content with that of the Google data set. This lower bound is determined to be around 10^-4 (1 trajectory every 10,000 people) suggesting that relatively small data sets are suitable for replacing Big Tech reports.

Spatio-Temporal Variation-Induced Group Disparity of Intra-Urban NO2 Exposure

Previous studies on exposure disparity have focused more on spatial variation but ignored the temporal variation of air pollution; thus, it is necessary to explore group disparity in terms of spatio-temporal variation to assist policy-making regarding public health. This study employed the dynamic land use regression (LUR) model and mobile phone signal data to illustrate the variation features of group disparity in Shanghai. The results showed that NO₂ exposure followed a bimodal, diurnal variation pattern and remained at a high level on weekdays but decreased on weekends. The most critical at-risk areas were within the central city in areas with a high population density. Moreover, women and the elderly proved to be more exposed to NO₂ pollution in Shanghai. Furthermore, the results of this study showed that it is vital to focus on land-use planning, transportation improvement programs, and population agglomeration to attenuate exposure inequality.

Point-of-Care Quantification of Serum Alpha-Fetoprotein for Screening Birth Defects in Resource-Limited Settings: Proof-of-Concept Study

Background:

Maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) concentration typically increases during pregnancy and is routinely measured during the second trimester as a part of screening for fetal neural tube defects and Down syndrome. However, most pregnancy screening tests are not available in the settings they are needed the most. A mobile device–enabled technology based on MSAFP for screening birth defects could enable the rapid screening and triage of high-risk pregnancies, especially where maternal serum screening and fetal ultrasound scan facilities are not easily accessible. Shifting the approach from clinic- and laboratory-dependent care to a mobile platform based on our point-of-care approach will enable translation to resource-limited settings and the global health care market.

Objective:

The objective of this study is to develop and perform proof-of-concept testing of a lateral flow immunoassay on a mobile platform for rapid, point-of-care quantification of serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels, from a drop of human serum, within a few minutes.

Methods:

The development of the immunoassay involved the selection of commercially available antibodies and optimization of their concentrations by an iterative method to achieve the required detection limits. We compared the performance of our method with that of commercially obtained human serum samples, with known AFP concentrations quantified by the Abbott ARCHITECT chemiluminescent magnetic microparticle immunoassay (CMIA).

Results:

We tested commercially obtained serum samples (N=20) with concentrations ranging from 2.2 to 446 ng/mL to compare the results of our point-of-care assay with results from the Abbott ARCHITECT CMIA. A correlation of 0.98 (P<.001) was observed on preliminary testing and comparison with the CMIA. The detection range of our point-of-care assay covers the range of maternal serum AFP levels observed during pregnancy.

Conclusions:

The preliminary test results from the AFP test on the mobile platform performed in this study represent a proof of concept that will pave the way for our future work focused on developing a mobile device–enabled quad-screen point-of-care testing with the potential to enable the screening of high-risk pregnancies in various settings. The AFP test on the mobile platform can be applied to enable screening for high-risk pregnancies, within a few minutes, at the point of care even in remote areas where maternal serum tests and fetal ultrasound scans are not easily accessible; assessment of whether clinical follow-up and diagnostic testing may be needed after a positive initial screening evaluation; and development of surveillance tools for birth defects.

The Impact of Individual Mobility on Long-Term Exposure to Ambient PM2.5: Assessing Effect Modification by Travel Patterns and Spatial Variability of PM2.5

The impact of individuals' mobility on the degree of error in estimates of exposure to ambient PM2.5 concentrations is increasingly reported in the literature. However, the degree to which accounting for mobility reduces error likely varies as a function of two related factors-individuals' routine travel patterns and the local variations of air pollution fields. We investigated whether individuals' routine travel patterns moderate the impact of mobility on individual long-term exposure assessment. Here, we have used real-world time-activity data collected from 2013 participants in Erie/Niagara counties, New York, USA, matched with daily PM2.5 predictions obtained from two spatial exposure models. We further examined the role of the spatiotemporal representation of ambient PM2.5 as a second moderator in the relationship between an individual's mobility and the exposure measurement error using a random effect model. We found that the effect of mobility on the long-term exposure estimates was significant, but that this effect was modified by individuals' routine travel patterns. Further, this effect modification was pronounced when the local variations of ambient PM2.5 concentrations were captured from multiple sources of air pollution data ('a multi-sourced exposure model'). In contrast, the mobility effect and its modification were not detected when ambient PM2.5 concentration was estimated solely from sparse monitoring data ('a single-sourced exposure model'). This study showed that there was a significant association between individuals' mobility and the long-term exposure measurement error. However, the effect could be modified by individuals' routine travel patterns and the error-prone representation of spatiotemporal variability of PM2.5.

Kernel-based estimation of individual location densities from smartphone data

Localizing people across space and over time is a relevant and challenging problem in many modern applications. Smartphone ubiquity gives the opportunity to collect useful individual data as never before. In this work, the focus is on location data collected by smartphone applications. We propose a kernel-based density estimation approach that exploits cyclical spatio-temporal patterns of people to estimate the individual location density at any time, uncertainty included. Model parameters are estimated by maximum likelihood cross-validation. Unlike classic tracking methods designed for high spatio-temporal resolution data, the approach is suitable when location data are sparse in time and are affected by non-negligible errors. The approach is applied to location data collected by the Earthquake Network citizen science project which carries out a worldwide earthquake early warning system based on smartphones. The approach is parsimonious and is suitable to model location data gathered by any location-aware smartphone application.

Bayesian Nonparametric Monotone Regression

In many applications there is interest in estimating the relation between a predictor and an outcome when the relation is known to be monotone or otherwise constrained due to the physical processes involved. We consider one such application-inferring time-resolved aerosol concentration from a low-cost differential pressure sensor. The objective is to estimate a monotone function and make inference on the scaled first derivative of the function. We proposed Bayesian nonparametric monotone regression which uses a Bernstein polynomial basis to construct the regression function and puts a Dirichlet process prior on the regression coefficients. The base measure of the Dirichlet process is a finite mixture of a mass point at zero and a truncated normal. This construction imposes monotonicity while clustering the basis functions. Clustering the basis functions reduces the parameter space and allows the estimated regression function to be linear. With the proposed approach we can make closed-formed inference on the derivative of the estimated function including full quantification of uncertainty. In a simulation study the proposed method performs similar to other monotone regression approaches when the true function is wavy but performs better when the true function is linear. We apply the method to estimate time-resolved aerosol concentration with a newly-developed portable aerosol monitor. The R package bnmr is made available to implement the method.
