Bidirectional negative relation between young children's persistence and cheating

This research examined the link between persistence and cheating in 3- to 6-year-old children (2021-2022, N = 200, 100 boys; Mage = 4.85 years; all middle-class Han Chinese). Study 1 used a challenging game to measure whether children would cheat when they were allowed to play the game unsupervised. Results indicated that children's situational, but not trait, persistence negatively correlated with cheating: the higher children's situational persistence, the less likely they cheated. Study 2 not only replicated the results of Study 1 but also discovered that children who cheated became less persistent afterward. Our research reveals a novel bidirectional relation between situational persistence and cheating and underscores the importance of nurturing persistence in early childhood as a strategy to foster honesty.

A study on the correlation between physical fitness index and executive function in Chinese adolescents

OBJECTIVE

To explore the relationship between physical fitness index and executive function in Chinese adolescents, and to provide a reference for improving the development of executive function in Chinese adolescents.

METHODS

From September to December 2023, 5336 adolescents aged 13 to 18 years were selected by stratified whole cluster random sampling method in six regions of China for physical fitness and executive function tests. The relationship between adolescent physical fitness index and executive function was analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and logistic regression.

RESULTS

The correlation coefficients between adolescents' physical fitness index and inhibitory control reaction time were all 0.00094, p > 0.05; the correlation coefficients between adolescents' physical fitness index and working memory (1-back, 2-back) reaction time were -0.13 and -0.093, respectively, p < .05; the correlation coefficients between adolescents' physical fitness index and cognitive flexibility reaction time were -0.17 and -0.18, p < .05. Logistic regression analyses showed that 1-back, 2-back, and cognitive flexibility were significantly and positively correlated with physical fitness index in Models 1, 2, and 3 (all p values less than.01). The coefficients of inhibitory control were not significant in all three models (p > .05), and there was no significant relationship with physical fitness index.

CONCLUSION

The physical fitness index of Chinese adolescents has a significant positive correlation with working memory and cognitive flexibility, but not with inhibitory control, i.e. the higher the physical fitness index, the better the working memory and cognitive flexibility.

Hearts, flowers, and fruits: All children need to reveal their post-error slowing

Slowing down responses after errors (i.e., post-error slowing [PES]) is an established finding in adults. Yet PES in young children is still not well understood. In this study, we investigated (a) whether young children show PES in tasks with different types of cognitive conflict and differing demands on executive functions, (b) whether PES is adaptive and efficient in the sense that it is associated with better task performance, and (c) whether PES correlates between tasks. We tested 4- to 6-year-old children on the Funny Fruits task (FF; n = 143), a Stroop-like task that incorporates semantic conflict and taxes children's inhibition skills, and the Hearts and Flowers task (HF; n = 170), which incorporates spatial conflict and taxes children's inhibition skills in its incongruent block and taxes both inhibition and cognitive flexibility (rule-switching) skills in its mixed block. A subgroup of children were tested on both FF and HF (n = 74). Results revealed that, first, children showed PES in FF and both blocks of HF, indicating that PES occurs in both types of conflict and under varying executive demands. Second, PES was associated with task accuracy, but only for FF and the mixed HF. Third, a between-task association in PES emerged only between FF and the mixed HF. Together, these findings indicate that PES is still a developing strategy in young children; it is present but only adaptive for, and correlates between, semantic inhibition and spatial flexibility.

Executive functions and mathematical competence in Chinese preschool children: A meta-analysis and review

Numerous studies have been conducted on the correlation between preschool children’s executive functions and mathematical competence, the findings of those studies are inconsistent. This study used meta-analysis to investigate the correlation between executive functions and mathematical competence of preschool children in China, and then explored the moderating effects of age, gender, and instruments. The researchers conducted an extensive search of CNKI, Web of Science, Google Scholar and used screening criteria to identify 22 studies of Chinese preschoolers aged 3–7 years from 2007 to 2021. The findings indicated that there was a positive correlation between Chinese preschool children’s executive functions and mathematical competence (r = 0496), of which the effect size between mathematical competence and inhibition control was 0.347, and the effect size for working memory was 0.432, with an effect size of 0.370 for cognitive flexibility. Furthermore, Moderation analysis suggests that the preschoolers’ age, gender, and instruments affected the association between the executive functions and mathematical competence. The implications of these findings for theory and practice deserve further discussion.

Persistence on Task, Executive Functions, and the Perceived Meaning of Occupations Among Children

IMPORTANCE

Persistence on task-the voluntary continuation of a goal-directed action despite difficulties-is described as a behavioral component of involvement in an occupation; however, it has not yet been extensively studied in the context of pediatric occupational therapy.

OBJECTIVE

To describe persistent children, compared with their less persistent peers, in terms of age, sex, executive functions (EF), and perceived meaning of occupations and to assess whether intrapersonal factors, EF, and the perceived meaning of occupations can predict persistence.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional.

SETTING

A community in Israel.

PARTICIPANTS

Typically developing healthy children (N = 180) ages 6.0 to 12.5 yr and their parents.

OUTCOMES AND MEASURES

The Tower of Hanoi task (TOH; seven discs) was used to assess persistence on task. EF were assessed with the TOH (three discs) and the Verbal Working Memory test. Occupational meaning-challenge, value, sense of time, and autonomy-was assessed with the Perceived Meaning of Occupation Questionnaire.

RESULTS

Twenty-six children (14%) completed the task. They were older than their peers, performed better on most of the EF tests, and perceived more autonomy in their everyday activities (Mann-Whitney U = 1,185.0, p < .001). However, only the perceived autonomy of occupations was found to be a statistically significant factor that predicted persistence on task (B = -0.12, SE = 0.05, Wald = 7.60, p = .01).

CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE

Perceived autonomy in everyday activities is crucial for persistence on task. Occupational therapy practitioners can promote children's involvement and persistence in cognitive tasks by supporting a sense of autonomy in everyday activities, although further study is needed. What This Article Adds: This article highlights the contribution of perceived autonomy in everyday activities to children's involvement and persistence on task by providing empirical data on children's persistence on task with regard to their EF and perceived meaning of occupations. Children who persisted longer and completed tasks differed from their less persistent peers in terms of age and EF. However, perceived autonomy in everyday activities was the only predictor of task completion.

Latent Profiles of Teacher-Reported Self-Regulation and Assessed Executive Function in Low-Income Community Preschools: Relations With Motor, Social, and School Readiness Outcomes

This study contributes to understandings of early childhood self-regulation and executive function, and their components, through taking a person-centered approach to investigating how these skills cluster together in children aged 4-5years. A sample of children (N=206) from preschools in low socioeconomic communities were assessed through teacher report of self-regulation and three executive function tasks at the commencement of the preschool year. Outcome variables included teacher report of social skills and behavioral problems, and children's school readiness and visual motor integration skills were directly assessed. When the scores from this low-income sample were compared to available norms, over 70% of children scored below the 50th percentile in executive function measures, approximately 20% were below average in self-regulation skills, 48% were delayed in school readiness scores, 36% had above average levels of internalizing problems, and 25% were above average in externalizing problems. A series of four latent profile models each used different measurement approaches and combinations of self-regulation and executive function components. In three of the four models (two which combined self-regulation and executive function measures and one with teacher report of self-regulation only), a high skill and low skill profile were found with 31 to 42% of children in the low profile depending on the model. Children were very similarly classified across all three models. When three executive function scores were modeled alone, a more complex three-profile solution emerged (low, moderate, and high) with 52% in the low profile. Children identified in the low profiles across all models were at greater risk of poorer school readiness, visual motor integration and social skills, and increased behavioral problems. Taken together, the findings suggest that self-regulation and executive function skills tend to cluster together at this age and in this low-income sample. Composite scores of teacher report of self-regulation are somewhat sufficient in identifying children who also have poorer executive function skills and are at risk of poorer motor, social, and school readiness outcomes. These children are an important target group for additional supports prior to school entry.
