Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to verify the effect of our previously proposed mesiodistal distance for multiple posterior implants on preserving peri-implant bone, and to provide a measurable criterion for predicting implant prognosis. METHODS One hundred and two patients with dental implants placed in the posterior free-end edentulous arches were recruited in this cross-sectional study. Calibrated X-rays (peri-apical [PA] or bite-wing x-ray) were collected to measure the mesiodistal space as well as the corresponding bone resorption of implants after prosthesis placement. Implants were assigned to the test/control group according to whether their mesiodistal distance following our proposed algorithm. After adjusting covariates, logistic multivariate regression analyses were performed to examine the relationship between inter-implant distance and marginal bone loss (MBL) during each follow-up interval. The effect of smoking habits was also analyzed. RESULTS Every observation period exhibited great significance between experimental and control group on peri-implant bone level (p = 0.006, 0.005, 0.001, 0.025, 0.001, correspondingly) and the difference had a tendency to grow as time went by except 4-year (MD = -0.19, -0.39, -0.43, -0.30, -1.26, correspondingly). While no significant difference was observed between smokers and nonsmokers in the same group (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION The mesiodistal algorithm of 4-4.6 mm (implant to adjacent canine tooth), 7-7.4 mm, 8-8.5 mm, and 9-9.5 mm was proved to be effective for maintaining peri-implant bone level. It was also observed in our study that the impact of inter-implant distance outweighed that of smoking. This study provided clinicians predictable prognostic outcomes for implants and reference for deciding treatment plans.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Between adjacent dental implants, an interimplant distance (IID) of at least 3 mm has been recommended to avoid resorbing the interproximal crestal bone. The effect of a 2 mm IID on crestal bone loss has been investigated but the literature is scarce when it comes to an IID of 1 mm. There is a need to document such clinical situations when they occur and elucidate if such a narrow IID is deleterious or not to the interproximal crest. The present case deals with an IID of 1 mm in the premolar area where, for the first time, the fate of an interimplant crest is reported after a 10-year follow-up. CASE PRESENTATION A 57-year-old patient attended with 2 hopeless maxillary premolars. The mesio-distal space available for implant rehabilitation was too narrow to receive standard diameter implants and keep an inter-implant distance (IID) of 3 mm as recommended by accepted guidelines. A protocol of immediate implant placement and provisionalization involving 2 implants of Ø 3.5 mm was implemented; placement in the extraction sockets resulted in an IID of 1 mm. After 3 months of healing the final prosthesis was delivered; the patient has been followed for 10 years now. Surprisingly, the findings showed that the interimplant crest was maintained 1.40 mm coronal to the shoulder of the neck of the implants. Bone completely filled the space between the prosthetic concave abutments and the interproximal papilla was closing the embrasure. The literature reports only 2 experimental studies involving a 1 mm IID; both showed that this did not lead to the resorption of the interproximal bone. CONCLUSIONS Unexpectedly, the present case with an IID of 1 mm did not lead to the resorption of the interproximal bone after 10 years. It is speculated that the reason for that is due to the implants displaying an internal conical connection, the platform-switching feature, concave abutments and subcrestal placement. The fate of the interproximal crest of implants placed with an IID of 1 mm lacks scientific evidence. More studies are warranted to elucidate this question in order to propose the best implant treatment in cases displaying a limited mesio-distal space.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present retrospective study aimed to investigate the influence of malposition on the occurrence of peri-implantitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included clinical records of systemically healthy patients with single and partial implant-supported rehabilitations and at least 1-year post-loading follow-up. The parameters collected included implant-related factors, patient-related factors, site-related factors, and prosthesis-related factors. The radiographic measurements were taken by using a dedicated software and the diagnosis of peri-implantitis was made based on all the available clinical and radiographic data. Descriptive statistics were provided for all variables. Following an exploratory approach, an implant-level analysis of factors influencing the occurrence of peri-implantitis was done through a multilevel multivariate logistic regression (mixed). RESULTS A total of 180 implants belonging to 90 subjects were randomly selected. Malposition showed no statistically significant association with the occurrence of peri-implantitis. According to the multi-level analysis, the parameters that were significantly associated with peri-implantitis included presence / history of periodontitis (OR = 5.945, 95% CI: 1.093 - 32.334, P = 0.039) and presence of an emergence profile angle ≥ 45° (OR = 9.094, 95% CI: 2.017 - 40.995, P = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS Implant malposition, as defined following Buser's criteria (2004), did not influence the occurrence of peri-implantitis in the selected cohort. Conversely, history of periodontitis and presence of a prosthetic emergence profile with an angle ≥ 45° were correlated to an increased risk of peri-implantitis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study assessed bone height between novel tapered implants at different inter-implant thread peak (TP) distances, and the impact of TP distance from outer buccal bone (BB) on marginal bone levels (MBL). MATERIALS AND METHODS Fully tapered implants with 0.5-mm thread depth and TP diameter 1 mm wider than the shoulder diameter were placed in healed ridges of minipigs. On one side, four implants were placed with inter-implant TP distances of 1, 2, or 3 mm corresponding to inter-implant implant shoulder distances of 2, 3, and 4 mm respectively. Three implants were placed on the other side with TP distances to outer BB of > 1 mm, 0.5-1 mm, or < 0.5 mm. After 12 weeks, (a) first bone-to-implant contact (fBIC), total BIC, bone area-to-total area (BATA), and coronal bone height between implants (Bi ½ max) for inter-implant distance, and (b) fBIC, BIC, and perpendicular crest to implant shoulder (pCIS) for BB were evaluated. RESULTS No significant differences in bone healing and inter-implant bone height were noted for any of the TP distances. BB resorption was significant when TP distance to outer BB was < 0.5 mm. However, fBIC was lowest with TP to outer BB of 1.75 mm. CONCLUSIONS Inter-implant bone height between adjacent implants can be maintained even at an inter-implant TP distance as low as 1 mm. A minimum TP to outer BB distance of 0.75 mm is required for predictable maintenance of MBL. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Inter-implant distance and BB thickness are clinically relevant and require preclinical research to clarify concepts.

Abstract
Biomedical research seeks to generate experimental results for translation to clinical settings. In order to improve the transition from bench to bedside, researchers must draw justifiable conclusions based on data from an appropriate model. Animal testing, as a prerequisite to human clinical exposure, is performed in a range of species, from laboratory mice to larger animals (such as dogs or non-human primates). Minipigs appear to be the animal of choice for studying bone surgery around intraoral dental implants. Dog models, well-known in the field of dental implant research, tend now to be used for studies conducted under compromised oral conditions (biofilm). Regarding small animal models, research studies mostly use rodents, with interest in rabbit models declining. Mouse models remain a reference for genetic studies. On the other hand, over the last decade, scientific advances and government guidelines have led to the replacement, reduction, and refinement of the use of all animal models in dental implant research. In new development strategies, some in vivo experiments are being progressively replaced by in vitro or biomaterial approaches. In this review, we summarize the key information on the animal models currently available for dental implant research and highlight (i) the pros and cons of each type, (ii) new levels of decisional procedures regarding study objectives, and (iii) the outlook for animal research, discussing possible non-animal options.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to measure the effect of drilling speed on heat generation in the cortical bone, on primary and secondary implant stability of implants and on early and late bone healing with micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Sixty implants were placed in the iliac crest of six sheep in order to form 5 different drilling protocols: 50rpm without saline cooling, and 400rpm, 800rpm, 1200rpm and 2000rpm with saline cooling. Simultaneous cortical bone temperature and primary stability at the time of placement; secondary stability and the ratio between relative bone and tissue volume (BV/TV) in 2D and 3D in micro-CT analysis were evaluated after 4 and 8 weeks. The 50rpm group had the highest cortical bone temperature and the longest operation duration with the highest primary stability. Slightly higher values of secondary stability (T2) and subsequent 2D and 3D BV/TV values were found in 1200 rpm with irrigation at 8 weeks. All groups had sufficient ISQ values at 8 weeks for loading although the micro-CT analysis showed varying percentages of bone tissue around implants. The influence of drill speed for implant osteotomy and its irrigation is minimal when it comes to changes in temperature of the cortical bone, primary and secondary implant stability and BV/TV.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Three millimeter is considered as the minimum distance to obtain soft and bone tissue stability in case of adjacent implants. The possibility to preserve peri-implant bone level using a platform switching connection has questioned this concept. PURPOSE The study evaluates soft tissue maintenance and marginal bone stability around implants, placed at 2 or 3 mm of distance. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty patients received two immediately loaded implants either at 2-mm (test) or at 3-mm (control) of distance in the premolar area. Soft tissue esthetics (papilla height and fill, keratinized tissue, recession) and radiographic peri-implant bone level changes were measured at 3, 6, and 12 months. RESULTS No significant differences between the two groups were detected neither for all soft tissue esthetic outcomes nor for bone level modifications up to 12 months. CONCLUSION The results suggested that up to 12 months post-loading, both 2- and 3-mm inter-distance platform-switched implants in healed site, supported adequate esthetic outcomes and peri-implant bone stability.

Abstract
Background: Optimal aesthetic implant restoration is a combination of a visually pleasing prosthesis and adequate surrounding peri-implant soft tissue architecture. This study describes the influence of the residual buccal bone thickness (BBT), measured at the time of implant placement, on the soft tissue maturation during three years of follow-up. Methods: Seventy-eight implants were enrolled in the present study. The BBT was assessed at the surgical stage and each case assigned to Group 1 (BBT values ≤0.5 mm), Group 2 (BBT values >0.5 and <1.5 mm), or Group 3 (BBT values ≥1.5 mm). Only native bone and healed sites were included. The tooth height (TH), based on the distance between the buccal free gingival margin at the zenith level and the crown incisal edge, according to the main axis of the tooth, was monitored at one, two, and three years from the final prosthodontic rehabilitation to determine any occurrence of recession or coronal repositioning of the gums over time. A Pearson Two-Tailed test was applied and the significance level set at p ≤ 0.05. Results: For BBT values ≤0.5 mm, the buccal gum at three years showed an average recession of 1.22 ± 0.41 mm. For BBT values >0.5 and <1.5 mm, the buccal gum also showed recession of 0.64 ± 0.29 mm. In contrast, for BBT values ≥1.5 mm, the buccal gum showed coronal growth of 0.77 ± 0.22 mm. The differences between the groups were significant (p ≤ 0.01) at all times. Conclusion: The BBT at the time of implant placement was found to affect the buccal gingival margin stability over three years of observation.

Abstract
Background Due to the risk of peri‐implantitis, following dental implant placement, this study aimed to evaluate risk indicators associated with marginal bone loss from a retrospective open cohort study of 4,591 dental implants, placed in private practice, with 5‐ to 10‐year follow‐up. Furthermore, the prevalence of mucositis and peri‐implantitis among the study cohort was evaluated, comparing strict versus relaxed criteria for bleeding on probing. Methods Periapical radiographs were used to evaluate changes in crestal bone level. Peri‐implant soft tissue was evaluated using an ordinal mucosal index in comparison with the conventional binary threshold for bleeding (i.e., present or not). Periodontal probing depth was not evaluated. Linear mixed models were used to evaluate bone level over time, and other risk indicators, at the patient and implant level. Results Risk indicators found to have a significant impact on bone level included: autoimmune disease, heavy smoking, bisphosphonate therapy, implant location, diameter and design, and the presence of a bone defect at site of implantation. The prevalence of mucositis at the implant level was 38.6% versus 14.2% at 6 to 7 years, when using strict versus relaxed criteria, respectively. The prevalence of peri‐implantitis after 6 to 7 years was 4.7% and 3.6% when using strict versus relaxed criteria, respectively. Conclusions The results of this study identify several risk factors associated with bone loss. Furthermore, the prevalence of mucositis and peri‐implantitis was shown to be lower at both the implant and the patient when using strict versus relaxed criteria based on the assessment of oral health surrounding dental implants.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to investigate of biocompatibility of polymeric implants modified with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Middle ear prostheses (otoimplants) made of the (poly)acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and ABS modified with silver nanoparticles were prepared through extrusion and injection moulding process. The obtained prostheses were characterized by SEM-EDX, micro-CT and mechanical tests, confirming their proper shape, good AgNPs homogenization and mechanical parameters stability. The biocompatibility of the implants was evaluated in vivo on rats, after 4, 12, 24 and 48 weeks of implantation. The tissue-healing process and cytotoxicity of the implants were evaluated on the basis of microscopic observations of the materials morphology after histochemical staining with cytochrome c oxidase (OCC) and acid phosphatase (AP), as well as via micro-tomography (ex vivo). The in vivo studies confirmed biocompatibility of the implants in the surrounding tissue environment. Both the pure ABS and nanosilver-modified ABS implants exhibited a distinct decrease in the area of granulation tissue which was replaced with the regenerating muscle tissue. Moreover, a slightly smaller area of granulation tissue was observed in the surroundings of the silver-doped prosthesis than in the case of pure ABS prosthesis. The kinetics of silver ions releasing from implants was investigated by ICP-MS spectrometry. The measurement confirmed that concentration of the silver ions increased within the implant’s immersion period. Our results showed that middle ear implant with the nanoscale modification is biocompatible and might be used in ossicular reconstruction.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to determine the correlation between bone volume density (BV/TV) around a titanium implant determined by micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and bone area density (BA/TA) measurements obtained using histomorphometry. An intramedullary rat femur implant model was evaluated to compare raw titanium implants with plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO)-coated titanium implants. Titanium and PEO-treated titanium pins were inserted into rat femurs under general anesthesia. The animals were sacrificed and femurs harvested at 0, 2, 4 and 6 weeks, and subsequently, histomorphometry and micro-CT were performed. BV/TV and BA/TA values were strongly and positively correlated at all time points and locations (with all correlation coefficients being >0.8 and with P < 0.001). BV/TV and BA/TA were significantly higher proximal to the growth plate than distal to the growth plate, with estimated differences of 14.10% (P < 0.001) and 11.95% (P < 0.001), respectively. BV/TV and BA/TA were significantly higher on the PEO-coated surface than on the raw titanium surface, with estimated differences of 3.20% (P = 0.044) and 4.10% (P = 0.018), respectively. Therefore, quantitative micro-CT analysis of BV/TV is correlated with BA/TA determined by histomorphometry when artifacts around titanium implants are minimized by a region of interest modification.

Abstract
The aim of the present preclinical in vivo study was to evaluate whether a modified "drill-only" protocol, involving slight underpreparation of the implant site, may have an effect on aspects of osseointegration of a novel bone-level tapered implant, compared with the "standard drilling" protocol involving taping and profiling of the marginal aspect of the implant socket. In each side of the edentulated and completely healed mandible of 11 minipigs, 2 tapered implants (8 mm long × 4.1 mm Ø, BLT; Institut Straumann AG, Basel, Switzerland) were installed either with the drill-only or the standard drilling protocol. Significantly lower average insertion torque values were recorded for the standard drilling protocol group (52 ± 29 Ncm) compared with the drill-only group (70 ± 27 Ncm) (t test, P ≤ 0.05); no significant difference was observed between the 2 groups regarding implant stability, by means of resonance frequency analysis (75 ± 8 vs. 75 ± 6, respectively). Half of the implants were immediately loaded and the rest were submerged, providing observation times of 8 or 4 wk, respectively. Non-decalcified histological and histomorphometric analysis of the implants with surrounding tissues showed no significant differences between the 2 drilling protocols regarding the distance from the implant platform to the first coronal bone-to-implant contact (f-BIC), the total bone-to-implant contact (BIC) as a percentage of the total implant perimeter, and the bone density in an area extending 1 mm laterally from the implant (BATA) within 2 rectangular regions of interest (ROIs) 4 mm in height, representing the coronal (parallel-walled) and apical (tapered) aspect of the implant (ROI 1 and ROI 2, respectively) in non-submerged implants. In general, marginal peri-implant bone levels were at or slightly apical to the implant platform, and large amounts of bone-to-implant contact were observed. In contrast, immediately loaded implants placed with the drill-only protocol showed statistically significantly lower BIC values (66% ± 13.7%) compared with those installed with the standard drilling protocol (74.8% ± 11.2%) (P = 0.018). In addition, although marginal bone levels were in most of the immediately loaded implants at or slightly apical to the implant platform, some of the implants installed with the drill-only protocol showed marginal bone loss and crater formation. Thus, in this model system, even slight underpreparation of the implant socket appeared to compromise osseointegration of immediately loaded bone-level tapered implants.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The use of natural substances and micronutritional approaches has been suggested as a therapeutic alternative to benefit the bone healing associated with no side effects. Nevertheless, the influence of micronutritional interventions with therapeutic proprieties on the bone repair has yet to be intensely evaluated, and no evidence is available exploring the impact of micronutrient supplementation on the peri-implant bone healing. OBJECTIVE This study investigated the effect of micronutrients supplementation on the bone repair around implants. MATERIAL AND METHODS One screw-shaped titanium implant was inserted in each tibia of each rat, which were assigned to: daily administration, for 30 d, of the placebo solution (Placebo group-n:18) or micronutrients supplementation (Micronutrients group-n:18), based on calcium, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin D3 intake. After, the animals were sacrificed. One of the implants was removed by applying a counter-torque force to evaluate the force to rupture the bone-implant interface. The other implant was evaluated by microcomputed tomography (CT) examination to determine the bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and the bone volume (BV/TV). RESULTS No statistically significant differences were observed between the groups for both counter-torque values and microCT parameters (p>0.05). CONCLUSION Within the limits of this study, micronutrients supplementation did not provide additional benefits to the bone healing around dental implants.
