Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the early impact of plaque accumulation in a buccal dehiscence defect on peri-implant marginal bone resorption. MATERIALS AND METHODS In six male Mongrel dogs, four dental implants were placed in the posterior maxilla on both sides (two implants per side). Based on the group allocation, each implant was randomly assigned to one of the following four groups to decide whether buccal dehiscence defect was prepared and whether silk ligation was applied at 8 weeks post-implant placement for peri-implantitis induction: UC (no defect without ligation); UD (defect without ligation); LC (no defect with ligation); and LD (defect with ligation) groups. Eight weeks after disease induction, the outcomes from radiographic and histologic analyses were statistically analyzed (p < .05). RESULTS Based on radiographs, the exposed area of implant threads was smallest in group UC (p < .0083). Based on histology, both the distances from the implant platform to the first bone-to-implant contact point and to the bone crest were significantly longer in the LD group (p < .0083). In the UD group, some spontaneous bone fill occurred from the base of the defect at 8 weeks after implant placement. The apical extension of inflammatory cell infiltrate was significantly more prominent in the LD and LC groups compared to the UC group (p < .0083). CONCLUSION Plaque accumulated on the exposed implant surface had a negative impact on maintaining the peri-implant marginal bone level, especially when there was a dehiscence defect around the implant.

Abstract
PURPOSE Placing dental implants in areas with low bone density or in conditions where bone healing is suppressed is challenging for clinicians. An experiment using a rodent model was performed with the aim of determining the efficacy of host modulation by increasing the systemic level of cholesterol sulfate (CS) using Irosustat in the context of the bone healing process around dental implants. METHODS In 16 ovariectomised female Sprague-Dawley rats, 2 implant fixtures were placed in the tibial bones (1 fixture on each side). At 1 week after surgery, the high-CS group (n=8) received Irosustat-mixed feed, while the control group (n=8) was fed conventionally. Block specimens were obtained at 5 weeks post-surgery for histologic analysis and the data were evaluated statistically (P<0.05). RESULTS Unlike the high-CS group, half of the specimens in the control group demonstrated severe bone resorption along with a periosteal reaction in the cortex. The mean percentages of bone-to-implant contact (21.5%) and bone density (28.1%) near the implant surface were significantly higher in the high-CS group than in the control group (P<0.05), as was the number of Haversian canals (by 5.3). CONCLUSIONS Host modulation by increasing the CS level may enhance the osseointegration of dental implants placed under conditions of impaired bone healing.

Abstract
AIMS To histologically compare osseointegration and crestal bone healing between newly introduced tapered, self-cutting bone-level test implants and tapered bone-level control implants in sites with fully healed sites. METHODS Sixty-six implants (33 test, 33 control) were placed 1 mm subcrestally in a minipig model and underwent qualitative histologic and quantitative histometric analyses after 3, 6 and 12 weeks of submerged healing. The primary and secondary outcomes were the bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and first bone-to-implant contact (fBIC). Outcomes between the test and control implants were statistically compared. RESULTS The BIC values of the test implants were comparable and non-inferior over the time points studied, except for the 12 weeks time point which showed statistically significantly higher BIC values of the test (88.07 ± 5.35%) compared to the control implants (80.88 ± 7.51%) (p = .010). Similarly comparable and non-inferior were the fBIC values, except for the 6-week outcome, which showed statistically higher values for the test (-546.5 ± 450.80 μm) compared to the control implants (-75.7 ± 100.59 μm). fBIC results for the test implants were qualitatively more stable and consistent between test time points. CONCLUSION Novel self-cutting bone-level test implants demonstrated superior osseointegration and similar bone levels compared to conventional bone-level implants after a healing period of 12 weeks in healed ridges.

Abstract
Enhanced mucosal sealing around titanium implants can reduce complications such as peri-implantitis. The present study aims to investigate the mucosal healing at the early stage around the protease activated receptor 4-agonist peptide (PAR4-AP)- or perpendicularly protruded type I collagen (pCol)-treated titanium implants. A total of 72 implants were placed in 36 rats in the study. Following extractions, two tissue-level implants among the following three different surfaces, PAR4-AP-coated (PAR4 group, n = 24), pCol-treated (pCol group, n = 24) and non-treated (control group, n = 24) ones, were placed in the maxillae of each rat based on a split-mouth design. The specimens retrieved at 8 h (n = 8 per group), 3 days (n = 8 per group), and 2 weeks (n = 8 per group), were immunostained and tissue-cleared, and the signals of laminin-5 and collagen fibers were observed under multiphoton microscopy. Statistical analyses were performed using linear mixed model with post hoc tests to compare differences between the groups. While there was no intergroup difference at 8 h, the laminin-5 at 3 days was more abundant near the PAR4-group-surface, and its area was significantly larger in the PAR4 group (0.0204 ± 0.0194 mm2 ) than the control (0.0019 ± 0.0025 mm2 , p = .001) and pCol (0.0023 ± 0.0022 mm2 , p < .001) groups. The pCol group showed a significantly larger area of collagen fibers (0.0230 ± 0.0148 mm2 ) compared to the control (0.0035 ± 0.0051 mm2 , p = .002) and PAR4 (0.0031 ± 0.0057 mm2 , p < .001) groups at 3 days. At 3 days and 2 weeks, the collagen fiber orientation of the pCol group showed a more perpendicular manner compared to the control and PAR4 groups. The signal of basal lamina and collagen fibers were stronger around the PAR4-AP- and pCol-treated titanium surfaces, respectively during the early healing stage. This could have implications for improved mucosal sealing around dental implants, potentially reducing complications such as peri-implantitis.

Abstract
In recent years, 3D-printing technology to fabricate dental implants has garnered widespread attention due to its patient-specific customizability and cost-effectiveness. This preclinical animal study analyzed the radiographic and histomorphometric outcomes of 3D-printed implants (3DIs) placed immediately after extraction and compared them to conventional implants (CIs). 3DIs and CIs of the same dimensions placed immediately were analyzed at 2, 6, and 12 weeks. The micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) analysis revealed statistically significant differences at 2 weeks in favor of 3DIs over the CIs in terms of bone volume/tissue volume (BV/TV), bone surface/bone volume (BS/BV), trabecular bone pattern factor (Tb.Pf), and structure model index (SMI). At 2 weeks, the mean bone-to-implant contact (BIC) of the 3DIs was greater than that of the CIs; the mean bone area fraction occupancy (BAFO) and the number of Haversian canals of the 3DIs showed no statistically significant differences compared to CIs at 2 weeks. At 6 and 12 weeks, there were no statistically significant differences between the 3DIs and CIs in any parameters. Within limitations, in the early stage of extraction socket healing, the 3DIs demonstrated a higher BIC than the CIs, presenting that 3DIs may be a potential option for immediate placement to enhance osseointegration.

Abstract
Background. Infection of percutaneous implants in patients with limb amputation is the most common complication.
Aim of the study evaluation of the microflora in the implantation zone depending on the mechanical compression of the implant in conditions of its additional external fixation.
Methods. The study was performed on 36 male rabbits. The tibia of all the rabbits was sawn at the border of the upper and middle parts. The medullary canal was reamed and a percutaneous implant was placed in the tibial stump. The segment and the implant were fixed with an Ilizarov apparatus. An additional compression device was installed in 30 animals. We used 5 compression modes, accordingly, 6 experimental groups were formed, 6 animals in each: group 1 without compression, group 2 compression on the implant with force of 0.053 N/mm2, group 3 compression on the implant with force of 0.105 N/mm2, group 4 compression on the implant with force of 0.158 N/mm2, group 5 compression on the implant with force of 0.211 N/mm2, group 6 compression on the implant with force of 0.263 N/mm2. The restraint was removed 6 weeks after implantation for a total follow-up of 26 weeks. The microflora of the place where the implant enters the skin (the implant / skin interface) was investigated, the level of blood leukocytes and the level of C-reactive protein in blood serum were determined.
Results. On days 9-10 after implantation, significant differences in the microbial landscape were found at the site of the exit of the metal implant in animals of different groups. The largest number of strains was found in animals of groups 1, 5 and 6, the smallest in groups 2 and 3. The most frequently detected strains: S. saprophyticus and Enterococcus spp. It was found that the greatest statistically significant increase in the level of CRP in the blood serum was observed in animals of group 6. The level of leukocytes in animals of all groups did not change statistically significantly relative to preoperative values. Animals with better osseointegration (groups 2 and 3 no cases of implant loss) showed a minimal number of growing strains.
Conclusions. The microbiological profile of the implantation zone of percutaneous implants changes depending on the amount of mechanical compression. The optimal mode is 0.053-0.105 N/mm2.
