Cascading impacts of earthquakes and extreme heatwaves have destroyed populations of an iconic marine foundation species

Massive barnacle recruitment on the Gulf of St. Lawrence coast of Nova Scotia (Canada) in 2024 linked to increased sea surface temperature

With the ongoing climate and oceanographic change, an increasing number of studies are reporting dramatic population losses caused by thermal extremes in intertidal habitats. Under moderate warming, however, populations can fare better in places where species normally experienced suboptimal temperatures. This article reports the massive recruitment of the barnacle Semibalanus balanoides on the Gulf of St. Lawrence coast of Nova Scotia (Canada) in 2024. As recruits appear mostly during May in this region, coastal sea surface temperature (SST) in April is critical for the ecological performance of larvae, as they are pelagic and live in the water column for weeks before intertidal settlement. Thus, a study that spanned 12 years (2005 to 2016) on this coast found that annual barnacle recruitment was positively correlated to April SST. In April 2024, coastal SST was 116% higher than for the same month averaged over those 12 years (4.1 vs. 1.9 °C). This SST spike was followed by an elevated recruitment that was 111% higher than the average for those 12 years (1,278 vs. 607 recruits dm-2). Overall for the studied years, the amount of variation in annual barnacle recruitment statistically explained by April SST was 51%. While the southern distribution limit of S. balanoides has moved northwards in recent decades due to lethal warming, our results support the notion of improving reproductive success with seawater warming on colder northern shores.

Shifts in foundation species dominance and altered interaction networks after compounding seismic uplift and extreme marine heatwaves

Seismic activity, erosion, sedimentation, and extreme temperatures can cause compounding large-scale disturbances to marine organisms, like large intertidal foundational seaweeds. In November 2016, a 7.8 Mw earthquake uplifted 130 km of coastline by 0.5-6 m near Kaikōura, New Zealand and thereby increased intertidal desiccation, aerial temperatures, reef erosion, and water turbidity. Furthermore, stress on uplifted intertidal species was compounded by unprecedented marine heatwaves over the summer of 2017/18. Here we documented altered dominances of large foundational seaweed and possible flow-on effects on seaweed-associated flora and fauna, following the uplift and heatwaves. These compounding disturbances caused instant high canopy loss of the dominant primary foundation species - the large perennial canopy-forming southern bull kelp Durvillaea antarctica - and no post-disturbance recovery, suggesting a maintenance threshold has been exceeded. After canopy loss of the primary foundation species, alternative foundation species - i.e., subordinate competitors under pre-disturbance conditions (the perennial canopy-forming fucoids Carpophyllum maschalocarpum, Cystophora scalaris, and Hormosira banksii) increased in abundance. Furthermore, field observations of attachment interaction networks demonstrated that the primary and alternative foundation species facilitated different sessile and mobile taxa. For example, the smaller and more morphologically complex C. maschalocarpum, H. banksii, and C. scalaris, supported more novel attachment associations, whereas the larger Durvillaea supported longer attachment chains. Overall, our results highlight abrupt and potentially long-lasting ecological changes after compounding disturbances, which altered dominance hierarchies. Alternative foundation species are now more common than the pre-disturbance primary foundation species, with flow-on effects on wider communities that depend on biogenic habitats.

Kelp holdfast microclimates buffer invertebrate inhabitants from extreme temperatures

Climate change is altering environmental conditions, with microclimates providing small-scale refuges within otherwise challenging environments. Durvillaea (southern bull kelp; rimurapa) is a genus of large intertidal fucoid algae, and some species harbour diverse invertebrate communities in their holdfasts. We hypothesised that animal-excavated Durvillaea holdfasts provide a thermal refuge for epibiont species, and tested this hypothesis using the exemplar species D. poha. Using a southern Aotearoa New Zealand population as a case-study, we found extreme temperatures outside the holdfast were 4.4 °C higher in summer and 6.9 °C lower in winter than inside the holdfast. A microclimate model of the holdfasts was built and used to forecast microclimates under 2100 conditions. Temperatures are predicted to increase by 2-3 °C, which may exceed the tolerances of D. poha. However, if D. poha or a similar congeneric persists, temperatures inside holdfasts will remain less extreme than the external environment. The thermal tolerances of two Durvillaea-associated invertebrates, the trochid gastropod Cantharidus antipodum and the amphipod Parawaldeckia kidderi, were also assessed; C. antipodum, but not P. kidderi, displayed metabolic depression at temperatures above and below those inside holdfasts, suggesting that they would be vulnerable outside the holdfast and with future warming. Microclimates, such as those within D. poha holdfasts or holdfasts of similar species, will therefore be important refuges for the survival of species both at the northern (retreating edge) and southern (expanding edge) limits of their distributions.

Coral geochemical response to uplift in the aftermath of the 2005 Nias-Simeulue earthquake

On 28 March 2005, the Indonesian islands of Nias and Simeulue experienced a powerful Mw 8.6 earthquake and coseismic uplift and subsidence. In areas of coastal uplift (up to ~ 2.8 m), fringing reef coral communities were killed by exposure, while deeper corals that survived were subjected to habitats with altered runoff, sediment and nutrient regimes. Here we present time-series (2000-2009) of Mn/Ca, Y/Ca and Ba/Ca variability in massive Porites corals from Nias to assess the environmental impact of a wide range of vertical displacement (+ 2.5 m to - 0.4 m). High-resolution LA-ICP-MS measurements show that skeletal Mn/Ca increased at uplifted sites, regardless of reef type, indicating a post-earthquake increase in suspended sediment delivery. Transient and/or long-term increases in skeletal Y/Ca at all uplift sites support the idea of increased sediment delivery. Coral Mn/Ca and Ba/Ca in lagoonal environments highlight the additional influences of reef bathymetry, wind-driven sediment resuspension, and phytoplankton blooms on coral geochemistry. Together, the results show that the Nias reefs adapted to fundamentally altered hydrographic conditions. We show how centuries of repeated subsidence and uplift during great-earthquake cycles along the Sunda megathrust may have shaped the modern-day predominance of massive scleractinian corals on the West Sumatran reefs.

A century of canopy kelp persistence and recovery in the Gulf of Alaska

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Coastal Alaska contains vast kelp habitat that supports diverse marine and human communities. Over the past century, the North Pacific Ocean has undergone oceanographic and ecological regime shifts that have the potential to influence the structure and function of kelp ecosystems strongly. However, the remoteness and complexity of the glacially carved region precludes the regular monitoring efforts that would be necessary to detect such changes.

METHODS

To begin to fill this critical knowledge gap, we drew upon historical and modern surveys to analyse the change in spatial coverage and species composition of canopy kelp between two time points (1913 and the early 2000s to 2010s). We also incorporated decadal surveys on sea otter range expansion following complete extirpation and reintroduction to assess the influence of sea otter recovery on the spatial extent of canopy kelp.

KEY RESULTS

We found increases in the spatial extent of canopy kelp throughout the Gulf of Alaska where there was coverage from both surveys. Kelp in Southcentral Alaska showed extensive recovery after the catastrophic Novarupta volcano. Kelp in Southeast Alaska showed persistence and spatial increase that closely matched increases in the range of sea otters. Observations of thermally tolerant kelp species increased more than observations of cold-adapted species between the two surveys.

CONCLUSIONS

Contrary to trends observed at lower latitudes, the kelp forests that ring the Gulf of Alaska have been remarkably stable and even increased in the past century, despite oceanographic and ecosystem changes. To improve monitoring, we propose identification of sentinel kelp beds for regular monitoring to detect changes to these iconic and foundational canopy kelp species more readily.

Long-term community shifts driven by local extinction of an iconic foundation species following an extreme marine heatwave

Gradual ocean warming combined with stronger marine heatwaves (MHWs) can reduce abundances of foundation species that control community structures, biodiversity, and ecosystem functioning. However, few studies have documented long-term succession trajectories following the more extreme events that cause localized extinctions of foundation species. Here, we documented long-term successional changes to marine benthic communities in Pile Bay, New Zealand, following the Tasman 2017/18 MHW, which caused localized extinctions of dominant southern bull kelp (Durvillaea sp.). Six years on, multiscale annual and seasonal surveys show no sign of Durvillaea recolonization. Instead, the invasive annual kelp (Undaria pinnatifida), rapidly colonized areas previously dominated by Durvillaea, followed by large changes to the understory community, as Durvillaea holdfasts and encrusting coralline algae were replaced by coralline turf. Between 3 and 6 years after the total loss of Durvillaea, smaller native fucoids colonized in high densities. Although Undaria initially colonized plots throughout Durvillaea's tidal range, later in the succession Undaria only retained dominance in the lower intertidal zone and only in spring. Ultimately, the tidal zone was slowly replaced by alternative foundation species, composed of different canopy-forming brown seaweeds that dominated different intertidal elevations, resulting in a net increase in canopy and understory diversity. This study is a rare example of long-term effects following an extreme MHW that caused extinctions of a locally dominant canopy-former, but these events and their associated dramatic changes to community structures and biodiversity are expected to become increasingly common as MHWs continue to increase in strength, frequency, and duration.

Spatiotemporal stressors, not secondary structures or small temperature increases, control rapid facilitation of intertidal epifauna

Small animals (epifauna) are ubiquitous in marine systems. Epifauna have high secondary production and provide trophic linkages between primary producers and higher-order consumers, like fish. Despite their importance, little is known about how these animals respond to warming or how their communities vary across spatiotemporal gradients. Here we use mimics of turf seaweed and invasive kelp holdfast to test, in a 5-factorial field experiment, whether intertidal epifauna are facilitated by different habitat structures, temperature conditions, and along cooccurring spatiotemporal gradients. We found that facilitation of epifauna by intertidal turf seaweed peaked in summer, at low elevation, in older habitats and at a less wave-exposed site. However, epifauna were not affected by the presence of a secondary structure like kelp holdfast mimics or small temperature increases from passive solar heating of black and white mimics. There were many significant two-way, but few higher order interactions, showing stronger facilitation under specific environmental conditions, like at low elevation in summer, or low elevation in old habitats. These results highlight that turf-associated epifauna are controlled by vertical elevation, season, hydrodynamics, and habitat age, and appear to be resilient to small temperature increases. Findings are important to better understand linkages between primary producers and higher order consumers and system-wide productivity, and because fast growing turf, facilitated by global warming and eutrophication, are increasingly outcompeting slower growing large perennial canopy forming seaweeds, like kelp and rockweeds.

Biological Impacts of Marine Heatwaves

Climatic extremes are becoming increasingly common against a background trend of global warming. In the oceans, marine heatwaves (MHWs)-discrete periods of anomalously warm water-have intensified and become more frequent over the past century, impacting the integrity of marine ecosystems globally. We review and synthesize current understanding of MHW impacts at the individual, population, and community levels. We then examine how these impacts affect broader ecosystem services and discuss the current state of research on biological impacts of MHWs. Finally, we explore current and emergent approaches to predicting the occurrence andimpacts of future events, along with adaptation and management approaches. With further increases in intensity and frequency projected for coming decades, MHWs are emerging as pervasive stressors to marine ecosystems globally. A deeper mechanistic understanding of their biological impacts is needed to better predict and adapt to increased MHW activity in the Anthropocene.

Parallel recolonizations generate distinct genomic sectors in kelp following high-magnitude earthquake disturbance

Large-scale disturbance events have the potential to drastically reshape biodiversity patterns. Notably, newly vacant habitat space cleared by disturbance can be colonized by multiple lineages, which can lead to the evolution of distinct spatial "sectors" of genetic diversity within a species. We test for disturbance-driven sectoring of genetic diversity in intertidal southern bull kelp, Durvillaea antarctica (Chamisso) Hariot, following the high-magnitude 1855 Wairarapa earthquake in New Zealand. Specifically, we use genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) to analyse fine-scale population structure across the uplift zone and apply machine learning to assess the fit of alternative recolonizaton models. Our analysis reveals that specimens from the uplift zone carry distinctive genomic signatures potentially linked to post-earthquake recolonization processes. Specifically, our analysis identifies two parapatric spatial-genomic sectors of D. antarctica at Turakirae Head, which experienced the most dramatic uplift. Based on phylogeographical modelling, we infer that bull kelp in the Wellington region was probably a source for recolonization of the heavily uplifted Turakirae Head coastline, via two parallel, eastward recolonization events. By identifying multiple parapatric genotypic sectors within a recently recolonized coastal region, the current study provides support for the hypothesis that competing lineage expansions can generate striking spatial structuring of genetic diversity, even in highly dispersive taxa.

Unravelling seasonal trends in coastal marine heatwave metrics across global biogeographical realms

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) can cause dramatic changes to ecologically, culturally, and economically important coastal ecosystems. To date, MHW studies have focused on geographically isolated regions or broad-scale global oceanic analyses, without considering coastal biogeographical regions and seasons. However, to understand impacts from MHWs on diverse coastal communities, a combined biogeographical-seasonal approach is necessary, because (1) bioregions reflect community-wide temperature tolerances and (2) summer or winter heatwaves likely affect communities differently. We therefore carried out season-specific Theil–Sen robust linear regressions and Pettitt change point analyses from 1982 to 2021 on the number of events, number of MHW days, mean intensity, maximum intensity, and cumulative intensity of MHWs, for each of the world’s 12 major coastal biogeographical realms. We found that 70% of 240 trend analyses increased significantly, 5% decreased and 25% were unaffected. There were clear differences between trends in metrics within biogeographical regions, and among seasons. For the significant increases, most change points occurred between 1998 and 2006. Regression slopes were generally positive across MHW metrics, seasons, and biogeographical realms as well as being highest after change point detection. Trends were highest for the Arctic, Northern Pacific, and Northern Atlantic realms in summer, and lowest for the Southern Ocean and several equatorial realms in other seasons. Our analysis highlights that future case studies should incorporate break point changes and seasonality in MHW analysis, to increase our understanding of how future, more frequent, and stronger MHWs will affect coastal ecosystems.
