Abstract
The developmental condition of children after neonatal arterial ischemic stroke (NAIS) is characterized by cognitive and motor impairments. We hypothesized that independent walking age would be a predictor of later global cognitive functioning in this population. Sixty-one children with an available independent walking age and full-scale intelligence quotient (IQ) score 7 years after NAIS were included in this study. Full-scale IQ was assessed using the fourth edition of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-IV). Independent walking age was negatively correlated with full-scale IQ score at 7 years of age (Pearson correlation coefficient of -0.27; 95% confidence interval from -0.48 to -0.01; p < 0.05). Early motor function is correlated with later global cognitive functioning in children after NAIS. Assessing and promoting early motor ability is essential in this population.

Abstract
AIM To test the association between perinatal inflammation exposure and Full-Scale IQ (FSIQ) score 7 years after neonatal arterial ischaemic stroke (NAIS). METHOD We conducted a cross-sectional ancillary study nested in a multicentric longitudinal French cohort of infants born at term with NAIS between November 2003 and October 2006. Seventy-three children were included (45 males, 28 females). The a priori defined primary outcome measure was the FSIQ score assessed with the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fourth Edition at 7 years of age. RESULTS Seventeen (23%) of the included children were exposed to perinatal inflammation. Exposure to perinatal inflammation was independently associated with an increase of FSIQ score (coefficient 13.4, 95% confidence interval 1.3-25.4; p = 0.03). Children exposed to perinatal inflammation had a higher median cerebral volume, a lower median lesion volume, and less extensive lesion distributions compared to non-exposed children. INTERPRETATION We propose the existence of two NAIS categories: arteritis-associated NAIS in children exposed to perinatal inflammation and embolism-associated NAIS in children non-exposed to perinatal inflammation. Identifying these two NAIS categories would open the possibility for specific curative strategies: anti-inflammatory strategy in arteritis-associated NAIS and recanalization strategy in embolism-associated NAIS.

Abstract
Dynamically allocating neural resources to salient features or objects within our visual space is fundamental to making rapid and accurate decisions. Impairments in such visuospatial abilities have been consistently documented in the clinical literature on individuals with cerebral palsy (CP), although the underlying neural mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, we used magnetoencephalography (MEG) and oscillatory analysis methods to examine visuospatial processing in children with CP and demographically matched typically developing (TD) children. Our results indicated robust oscillations in the theta (4-8 Hz), alpha (8-14 Hz), and gamma (64-80 Hz) frequency bands in the occipital cortex of both groups during visuospatial processing. Importantly, the group with CP exhibited weaker cortical oscillations in the theta and gamma frequency bands, as well as slower response times and worse accuracy during task performance compared to the TD children. Furthermore, we found that weaker theta and gamma oscillations were related to greater visuospatial performance deficits across both groups. We propose that the weaker occipital oscillations seen in children with CP may reflect poor bottom-up processing of incoming visual information, which subsequently affects the higher-order visual computations essential for accurate visual perception and integration for decision-making.

Abstract
Functional MRI is increasingly being used in the assessment of brain activation and connectivity following stroke. Many of these studies rely on the Blood Oxygenation Level Dependent (BOLD) contrast. However, the stability, as well as the accuracy of the BOLD response to motor task in the ipsilesional hemisphere, remains ambiguous. In this work, the BOLD signal acquired from both healthy and affected hemispheres was analyzed in 7-year-old children who sustained a Neonatal Arterial Ischemic Stroke (NAIS). Accordingly, a repetitive motor task of the contralesional and the ipsilesional hands was performed by 33 patients with unilateral lesions. These patients were divided into two groups: those without cerebral palsy (NAIS), and those with cerebral palsy (CP). The BOLD signal time course was obtained from distinctly defined regions of interest (ROIs) extracted from the functional activation maps of 30 healthy controls with similar age and demographic characteristics as the patients. An ROI covering both the primary motor cortex (M1) and the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) was also tested. Compared with controls, NAIS patients without CP had similar BOLD amplitude variation for both the contralesional and the ipsilesional hand movements. However, in the case of NAIS patients with CP, a significant difference in the averaged BOLD amplitude was found between the healthy and affected hemisphere. In both cases, no progressive attenuation of the BOLD signal amplitude was observed throughout the task epochs. Besides, results also showed a correlation between the BOLD signal percentage variation of the lesioned hemisphere and the dexterity level. These findings suggest that for patients who sustained a NAIS with no extensive permanent motor impairment, BOLD signal-based data analysis can be a valuable tool for the evaluation of functional brain networks.

Abstract
Background: Children with traumatic brain injury (TBI) are reported to have persistent deficits in executive functioning and subtle motor functionsAim: This study examined the relationship between subtle motor signs and executive functioning in children with TBIMethods: Eighteen children aged 13-18 years with mild to severe TBI at least one year before study participation and 16 age-matched typically-developing controls were examined using the Revised Physical and Neurological Examination of Subtle Signs (PANESS), a simplified Go/No-go task, portions of the Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System Verbal Fluency and Trail Making tests, and a Wechsler Coding testResults: There were significant associations between PANESS scores and executive functioning measures in children with TBI but not in controls. Conclusion: Results suggest that assessment of subtle motor signs may provide broader information regarding functioning after pediatric TBI.

Abstract
AIM To investigate health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and manual ability five years after neonatal arterial ischemic stroke (NAIS). METHODS Data was prospectively obtained by the Swiss Neuropaediatric Stroke Registry between 2000 and 2010. Two years after NAIS, cognitive and motor outcomes was assessed using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID-II). After 5 years, HRQOL was assessed with the KIDSCREEN-27 and manual ability with the ABILHAND-Kids. Manual ability and HRQOL were compared between children with and without cerebral palsy (CP) and HRQOL was correlated with manual ability. RESULTS Seventy-four patients were examined at the age of 2 years, at the age of 5 years 61 patients underwent a follow-up examination. Two years after NAIS, 29 children (39.1%) were diagnosed with CP. HRQOL 5 years after NAIS was comparable to normative values. Children with CP had a significantly lower HRQOL-index (p = 0.013) and lower scores in the subscale psychological well-being (p = 0.012) and social support & peers (p = 0.048). The ABILHAND-Kids measure was significantly lower in children with CP compared to children without CP (p < 0.001). Manual ability correlated significantly with HRQOL. CONCLUSION Five years after NAIS, HRQOL is comparable to that of typically developing peers, but reduced in children with CP. Poorer manual ability is associated with lower HRQOL. Interventions improving hand function might influence HRQOL and should be considered early on.

Abstract
Cerebral palsy (CP), an umbrella term for a developmental motor disorder caused by early brain injury (EBI)/interference, remains debated. In this essay, we present a narrative, beginning with the original anatomical-clinical description of the so-called paralysie congéniale (congenial paralysis) by the French psychiatrist Jean-Baptiste Cazauvieilh. We then discuss how the concept has evolved over the last 2 centuries. We aim to illustrate these ideas with the biopsychosocial model of health, especially in light of the current neuroscientific and sociological knowledge of human development. We endeavour to integrate 3 connected but distinct entities: (1) the EBI as a seminal turning point of the individual's story; (2) the clinical findings we call CP, when motor impairment and activity limitation related to post-EBI (or other early non-progressive brain interference) appears, and; (3) a post-EBI developmental condition that encompasses the overall consequences of an EBI. This framework should guide individual, familial and collective care discussions and research strategies beyond the scope of CP.

Abstract
Both hand and finger sensory perception and motor abilities are essential for the development of skilled gestures and efficient bimanual coordination. While finger dexterity and finger sensory perception can be impaired in children with cerebral palsy (CP), the relationship between these two functions in this population is not clearly established. The common assumption that CP children with better sensory function also demonstrate better motor outcomes has been recently challenged. To study these questions further, we assessed both finger dexterity and finger gnosia, the ability to perceive one’s own fingers by touch, in groups of 11 children with unilateral (i.e., hemiplegic CP) and 11 children with bilateral spastic CP (i.e., diplegic CP) and compared them with typical children. In our sample, children with hemiplegia exhibited finger dexterity deficit in both hands and finger gnosia deficit only in their paretic hand. In contrast, children with diplegia exhibited finger gnosia deficits in both hands and finger dexterity deficit only in their dominant hand. Thus, our results indicated that children with spastic hemiplegia and diplegia present different sensory and motor profiles and suggest that these two subgroups of CP should be considered separately in future experimental and clinical research. We discuss the implications of our results for rehabilitation.
